Benjamin Fanjoy | Getty Images Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang is expected to attend a state dinner for Xi Jinping when the Chinese leader travels to Washington to meet with President Donald Trump next week, a person familiar with the matter told CNBC on Tuesday. The person spoke on condition of anonymity to discuss the private guest list. Huang’s planned attendance at the high-profile event is the latest sign of his alliance with Trump. Those ties appeared stronger than ever this week, as the two men pushed back against other tech CEOs who have issued dire warnings about the risks posed by rapid AI advancement. AI is expected to be a main topic of discussion when Xi meets with Trump. Huang was one of a select group of CEOs who traveled to China with Trump earlier this year. It was not immediately clear who else has been invited to the state …

Jefferson County Coroner Greg Furlong told NPR that the woman, who died on Saturday, was unvaccinated. “This is a heartbreaking loss for the family and an unfortunate reminder that measles can be a serious and potentially life-threatening disease,” a statement from the coroner’s office said. Officials have not released the woman’s identity, but said she was a resident of Jefferson County. This is the third death that Pennsylvania state officials have linked to measles this year. No other states have announced measles deaths in 2026. On Friday, the Pennsylvania Department of Health reported 676 measles cases so far this year. It also reported 52 new positive cases from Wednesday to Friday. Pennsylvania officials and …

America built a surveillance state out of fear and never left it

America built a surveillance state out of fear and never left it

During Friday’s 9/11 commemorations, it was startling to realize that one-third of the American population today wasn’t born when it happened. To those of us of an older vintage, Sept. 11, 2001, seems like it was yesterday. The terrorist attacks at the hands of Osama bin Laden and al-Qaida, which killed nearly 3,000 people, leveled the World Trade Center and damaged the Pentagon, marked a turning point in our history. Whatever sense of invulnerability America may have had as the world’s only superpower was shattered, and it precipitated massive changes in the way we lived, traveled and perceived ourselves. We started what was quickly named the global “war on terror,” and our president, George W. Bush, proclaimed that the rest of the world was either with us or they were with the terrorists. Sept. 11 was a politically unifying event at first, as wars tend to be. On the evening of the attack, members of Congress and senators of both parties came together on the steps of the Capitol to sing “God Bless America,” and …

No. 4 Texas Stuns No. 1 Ohio State 24-23 After Erasing 20-Point 4th-Quarter Deficit

AUSTIN, Texas (AP) — Arch Manning and No. 4 Texas stole a 24-23 victory from No. 1 Ohio State on Saturday night, rallying from a 20-point fourth-quarter deficit to win it on Hollywood Smothers’ 1-yard touchdown run with 25 seconds left. The Longhorns’ 20-point comeback in the fourth quarter is the largest fourth-quarter rally to win against an AP No. 1 team, according to Sportradar. The Buckeyes had appeared in complete control after a dominant three quarters and led 23-3. But Texas (2-0) rallied behind Manning, whose touchdown pass to Ryan Wingo early in the fourth started the comeback. Smothers scored on a 1-yard run with 7:14 to play before Ohio State (1-1) drove for what could have been a clinching field goal. Connor Hawkins, who had earlier made three field goals, missed from 45 yards, setting up Texas’ winning drive. “When that happened, I knew it was our time,” Manning said. “I’m really proud of the way we responded. We could have let that thing go. It’s a testament to our coaches and our …

‘Costing billions’: is the pensions triple lock a lifeline or simply unaffordable? | State pensions

There were fresh calls this week for the state pension “triple lock” to be ditched as debate rages over whether the UK can afford it. The triple lock guarantees that the state pension goes up each year in line with inflation or wage increases or 2.5% – whichever is the highest. In the latest intervention, the British Chambers of Commerce has called for the policy to be scrapped, and the money saved to be put towards tackling the youth unemployment crisis. Meanwhile, a leading economic thinktank has added fuel to the fire by reminding everyone of the multibillion-pound cost of the policy. So what is the triple lock, is it a good or a bad policy, and is it destined for the chop? Here are four things you need to know: It was introduced by George Osborne (sort of) A few years ago, a Guardian opinion piece claimed that George Osborne – who served as Conservative chancellor from 2010 to 2016 – was “the most deliberately, intentionally, knowingly poverty-causing chancellor of modern times”. However, he did …

State pensioners ‘targeted with more legal letters’ HMRC admits | Personal Finance | Finance

Jonathan Athow Director General HM Revenue and Customs admitted more pensioners will be targeted (Image: Parliament TV) Pensioners could be targeted by legal letters over savings, officials at HMRC have admitted. Due to the personal tax threshold freeze, together with frozen interest tax bands, the HMRC told a committee of MPs that it was more likely people are being targeted. And officials told the Treasury Committee that banks are sending HMRC officials details about the savings of state pensioners – and they’re being charged tax for the first time. Dame Harriett Baldwin mentioned a constituent’s case where a pensioner in her mid-70s: “Suddenly got a demand for a past year—something like two or three years ago—based on bank data. Are you suddenly getting a lot of cases open retrospectively because you are now receiving more information on savings interest from banks? Is that something that is happening?” HMRC Director General for Customer Compliance Group Penny Ciniewicz said that officials are ‘Certainly using bank and savings data more than we used to.” The increase in pensioners …

After Election Triumph, German Far-Right Seeks Allies to Form State Government

After Election Triumph, German Far-Right Seeks Allies to Form State Government

MAGDEBURG, Germany, Sept 11 (Reuters) – After its triumph in Sunday’s state election in Saxony-Anhalt, Germany’s far-right AfD needs to attract defectors from other parties or reach an agreement with the small far-left BSW party that is setting difficult conditions in return for its support. Ulrich Siegmund, the 35-year-old AfD leader who is expected to become state premier, said there were ‌discussions with both the BSW and individual ‌members of other parties “to see if there is any common ground that could help secure a stable majority”. He said he wanted to form such a majority in the state legislature “as soon as possible”. However, there is nothing unusual in German politics about coalition negotiations that last for weeks or even months before a government can be formed. The discussions underline the political realities now facing Siegmund, who said repeatedly during the campaign that he wanted an absolute majority to be able to govern alone, only to fall just short, winning 39 seats in the 83-seat parliament. Even if he secures an agreement with another …

Humanists call on Burnham to go further with reforming ‘antiquated and archaic’ church and state rules – Humanists UK

Pictured: Prime Minister Andy Burnham, source: Number 10 Official Flickr, distributed under CC BY-NC-ND 4.0 license. Humanists UK has welcomed Prime Minister Andy Burnham’s announcement today that he will bring forward a Bill to end the specific legal bans on Roman Catholic and Jewish prime ministers advising the Crown on Church of England appointments – when those of all other religions or beliefs are already allowed to advise. But it has also said that the continuing absurdity of non-Anglicans advising on Church of England religious appointments shows the need to go further with separating church and state. In a written statement to Parliament, Andy Burnham said it was ‘unacceptable for there to be a legislative bar against people of any faith performing all the functions of my office’, and that his Government would ‘introduce a Bill at the earliest possible opportunity to correct this antiquated and archaic anomaly’. Because the Church of England is the established church, the Prime Minister has a formal role advising the monarch on the appointment of bishops and other senior …

Alex Brandon/AP hide caption toggle caption Alex Brandon/AP When Jacob York found out that Charlie Kirk had been fatally shot, he was at baseball practice. Standing in the outfield, he broke down in tears. That night, he decided that Kirk’s organization, Turning Point USA, should have a chapter on his campus. So he got to work starting one himself. “I feel like there [were] many of us who had that wake-up call,” said York, 21, who attends Olivet Nazarene University, a small Christian school south of Chicago. “I think I submitted the request to start a chapter six times,” he recalled. “There were so many requests that it kept saying, ‘Oops, try again later.’” Kirk’s death one year ago on the campus of Utah Valley University was as stunning for his followers as it was painful. A little more than a decade earlier, he had founded Turning Point with the goal of getting more young people involved in …
