The government must publish a “credible” plan for the future of British Steel, MPs have warned. In a new report, the Public Accounts Committee (PAC) warns that the government has not yet set out concrete plans for how the company will become financially sustainable. It continues to cost £1.3m a day of UK taxpayers’ money. Using emergency legislation, the government intervened to prevent the closure of its blast furnaces in April 2025. More than a year later, it could not set out what business model or decarbonisation pathway would put the company on a sustainable footing, the committee concluded. The process relies on coal, and it generates roughly 7% of the carbon emissions that drive climate change—about as much as the fashion industry. Decarbonization has proved difficult: Profit margins are tight and furnaces have long service lives, making investment tough to justify. Now Laureen Meroueh may have found a way to clean up steelmaking without driving up the price. Meroueh, the founder of Hertha Metals, invented a new furnace that simplifies the chemistry behind the process. Her method turns iron ore into refined liquid steel in a single step, and it swaps coal for natural gas. Together, those changes slash emissions by at least half, she says, and cut costs by 25% compared with steelmaking business as usual. Sept 2 : Mexico has started an anti-dumping investigation into imports of steel sheet originating in Japan, according to a resolution published early on Wednesday in the country’s official gazette. The investigation, accepted by the Mexican Ministry of Economy, was requested by Grupo Acerero that claimed unfair international trade practices, specifically price discrimination, on imported steel sheets manufactured in Japan. The anti-dumping investigation will be done on steel sheet imports originating in Japan, regardless of the country of export, the resolution published in the official gazette added. Grupo Acerero claimed that Japanese steel sheets, “entered Mexico under conditions of price discrimination, causing material harm to the domestic industry.” Following the investigation, Mexico’s Economy Ministry could determine to impose definitive anti-dumping duties on the products involved. The resolution set the investigation period through 2025, and the damage analysis period from January 2023 through December 2025. Producers or individuals linked to the investigation will have 23 business days to establish their legal interest and submit responses, arguments, and evidence. Source link
