Steven Soderbergh first came to the Cannes Film Festival in 1989 with his debut narrative feature, Sex, Lies, and Videotape. At 26 years old, he became the youngest solo director to win the Palme d’Or. “How little we expected,” he says. “We slipped into the competition because of another film dropping out, so it all just felt like pure upside.” Since that career-launching breakthrough, the prolific filmmaker has mixed beloved commercial hits (Erin Brockovich, Magic Mike, the Ocean’s franchise) with innovative filmmaking techniques, like shooting the 2018 film Unsane on an iPhone. In his latest film, John Lennon: The Last Interview, Soderbergh again explores a new filmmaking tool: generative AI. ‘Jurassic Park’ Screenwriter David Koepp Says Steven Spielberg Wanted ‘Disclosure Day’ to Be His Best Script Yet

At first, Koepp assumed the director was just after some feedback, writer to writer. Eventually, though, Spielberg asked him, “Do you want to do it?” The result, Disclosure Day, is Koepp’s seventh script for which Spielberg served as either director or producer. It’s a collaboration that stretches back to Jurassic Park—Koepp’s genetic reengineering of the Michael Crichton novel that shot his screenwriting career into the stratosphere—and includes two Indiana Jones movies as well as War of the Worlds. “He’s a good collaborator because he listens as much to me as I do to him,” Spielberg said in an email. Koepp is willing, said Spielberg, to rework a script “including and often through principal photography.” Indeed, Koepp wrote 42 drafts for Disclosure Day—a personal record. “[Spielberg] was more exacting than I’ve ever seen him because he knows he’s worked in this area before,” says Koepp. “He wants this one to be the best one.” Koepp was referring, of course, to Spielberg’s multi-film preoccupation with visitors from outer space. As real-world political news continues to dominate the airwaves, a set of first-look images have been unveiled for Steven Moffat’s new drama set in Downing Street, fittingly titled Number 10. The pictures show us our first glimpses at Black Mirror’s Rafe Spall as the Prime Minister, stood outside the iconic Downing Street doorway, as well as Coronation Street’s Katherine Kelly as the Chief of Staff, stroking the Number 10 cat, aka Chief Mouser to the Cabinet Office, on the windowsill. After an introduction from star Colman Domingo, the filmmaker received rapturous applause from the annual convention of movie theater owners in Las Vegas on Wednesday. Julian Sklar spends most of his workday performing on camera. Not for anyone important; the cantankerous artist (played by Ian McKellen), the protagonist of Steven Soderbergh’s new movie, The Christophers, is recording jokey Cameos for eager fans. Facing a ring-lit iPhone, he rambles about his fading career with chipper bumptiousness. Julian, the viewer quickly learns, is guarding a series of unfinished masterpieces in his house that he refuses to complete or sell, and his greedy children want their hands on his stash either way. His kids have thus concocted a scheme: Hire someone to work as their father’s assistant, secretly finish the paintings under his nose, and make a profit. This being a Soderbergh movie, one might hear that premise and expect a caper—he directed Ocean’s Eleven (and two of its sequels), after all.
