Manchester, Stansted, and East Midlands airports have been targeted by hackers, with customer data belonging to millions of passengers accessed. The airports have been “subject to a cybersecurity incident by an unauthorised third party,” and customer data, including email addresses, phone numbers, vehicle registrations, and postcodes, has been obtained. It is understood that data from 8.7 million customers was accessed. Information relating to car park, lounge, and Fast Track bookings, as well as in-airport WiFi sign-ups, was also accessed. The systems accessed, Manchester Airports Group said, do not hold customers’ bank or payment details. The group was made aware of the cybersecurity incident on Tuesday (August 25). It is believed to have happened a few days earlier. Customer data has been stolen after a cyber attack targeting three UK airports including Manchester and Stansted. The data seized from 8.7 million customers included email addresses, phone numbers, vehicle registrations and postcodes, Manchester Airport Group (MAG) said. The company announced the “cyber security incident” relating to Manchester, Stansted and East Midlands airports at around 1pm on Thursday. “Manchester Airports Group has been subject to a cyber security incident by an unauthorised third party,” an MAG spokesperson said. “A quantity of customer data has been obtained that relates to car park, lounge and Fast Track bookings and in-airport WIFI sign-ups at Manchester, Stansted and East Midlands airports. “We immediately contained the risk and have been working with specialist advisors and taking appropriate steps to protect our customers and systems. “We have informed and are working with the relevant authorities. “At no point has passenger safety or aviation security been compromised.” MAG said the system accessed did not hold customers’ bank or payment details. This article first appeared in Radio Times magazine. It sounds like a scene from The Handmaid’s Tale. Between 1949 and 1976, over 250,000 young pregnant women were forced to give up their babies for adoption. Their newborn children were taken from them and given to childless, usually middle-class, couples regarded as more deserving parents. But this wasn’t a fictional dystopia; it happened here in the United Kingdom, where secretive mother and baby homes proliferated after the Second World War to deal with what was then seen as the problem of unmarried mothers – mainly working-class teenage girls, who’d often had little sex education. One of Sir Keir Starmer’s final acts as Prime Minister was to apologise on behalf of the British state to this scandal’s victims, women who are often now approaching the last years of their lives. California Retail Theft Blitz Leads To 97 Arrests And $1 Million In Stolen Merchandise

A coordinated crackdown on organized retail crime across California ended with 97 arrests and the recovery of thousands of stolen products, according to KTLA. Over nine days in early August, California Highway Patrol investigators worked alongside more than 100 law enforcement agencies as part of the National Organized Retail Crime Blitz. The enforcement effort focused on suspected theft activity at retailers, shopping centers and other businesses throughout the state. The KTLA report says that authorities ultimately recovered more than 8,500 items believed to have been stolen. CHP estimated the merchandise was worth roughly $1.05 million. Of the 97 people arrested during the operation, eight were taken into custody on felony charges. The enforcement push included operations in several communities. In San Diego, authorities recovered a large quantity of stolen sneakers, while officers in Roseville, Lodi and Stockton carried out proactive operations that led to additional arrests. Thieves have dealt a Sicilian museum a harrowing loss, stealing three of the five surviving devotional panels painted by Renaissance master Antonello da Messina. The assailants broke into the Regional Museum of Messina, also known as MuMem, on Saturday evening, as the port city celebrated the Ferragosto national holiday. Evading the museum’s security system, they took three wood panels that once composed a six-piece altarpiece known as the Polittico di San Gregorio, a seminal work within da Messina’s oeuvre and art history. Brazilian authorities have recovered eight prints from Henri Matisse’s iconic “Jazz” series (1947), the New York Times reports.   Two armed men stole the works on December 7 from the Mário de Andrade Library in São Paulo during public hours at the city’s largest library. In addition to the recovered Matisse works, they also took five paintings by Brazilian modernist Candido Portinari. The English edition of Folha de S. A Pablo Picasso painting stolen while on loan from the Guggenheim Museum more than six decades ago has resurfaced, and the museum has gone to court to get it back. The Solomon R. Guggenheim Foundation filed suit in New York State Supreme Court this week, according to Hyperallergic, against Massachusetts residents Lawrence Jay Handler and Wendy Cohen Handler, who the museum says currently possess Femme dans un fauteuil (Woman in an Armchair), a small 1918 painting that disappeared from the University of Pittsburgh in 1961. The University of Bonn in Germany announced last week that numerous fossils and other exhibits have been stolen from its Goldfuß Museum. The university is now appealing to the public for information on items put up for sale or found on display, in order to secure their recovery. The university said it is not clear when the items were stolen, but that it occured during renovation work, which began in December 2023 and is ongoing. In a blog post published August 7, the university shared images of the missing items, and asked the public for assistance.
