It has been a tough time for businesses across the retail and hospitality sectors as rates rise and shopping habits change. Stationery store TG Jones, which replaced WH Smith, is set to close 19 branches in September. Meanwhile, Beefeater is shutting 106 restaurants, and Brewers Fayre is closing 89. TG Jones The stationery chain is shutting 19 stores across the month, with a clearance sale also taking place. Closing-down sales have been launched in-store, with shoppers able to get up to 30% off. Stores will close throughout the month, with the first in Bath on Tuesday, September 1. Redcar and Redhill’s stores will close on September 5, while the following week, Market Harborough and Uckfield will close. Cambridge, Deal, Swindon, Helston and Basildon will see their stores close in the middle of the month, while Cardigan and Wells are yet to be announced. Premier Foreways announced the closures after plunging into liquidation. The five stores in Carlisle are set to close with Armstrong Watson appointed as liquidator. The locations operated under the Premier brand but are independently owned. Each has been branded a staple in the community after being open for nearly forty years. A family-owned business has confirmed it will close its high street shop after 80 years. Suttons Carpet and Furniture Centre, located at Wickford High Street, Essexwas established in the 1940s, with the owners setting up the company in the front room of their family home. The shop grew over the decades, eventually becoming a physical store and now being run by the fourth generation of the Sutton family. However, the owners have now confirmed that the business will close after serving customers for eight decades. A statement was shared on the business’s Facebook page. It reads: “After 8 decades Sutton’s is sadly closing the doors to its Wickford store. “Our management are retiring and us as staff and our wider community wish them all well in their next chapter.” S.H. Suttons Ltd originally sold everyday essentials, including vinegar, firelighters, blue bags, wheelbarrows, and paraffin, which they delivered to homes for heating. The pub, named after Lord Nelson, in Burnham Thorpe, Norfolk will close on September 6, staff have been told, according to reports. The pub, originally called the Plough, is thought to have first opened in the 1650s. It is said that its namesake enjoyed drinking at the establishment, and the seats on which he sat remains, along with other artefacts. It is also believed to be the place where he had his final drink before his death. He is said to have stopped in for a pint before the Battle of Trafalgar, in which he was fatally wounded. The leaseholders of the Grade II-listed 17th century building, Woodforde’s Brewery, are now looking for a new operator. Wendy’s has over 5,830 locations in the United States, as per numbers from February this year. However, as part of the popular burger-chain’s plan around five to six per cent of locations will shut in 2026. This equates to about 350 underperforming stores. The latest closure came in recent days when a restaurant at 4003 Wilmington Pike in Kettering, Ohio, had a sign posted on its front door which read: “This location is permanently closed.” This is the second store in the Drayton area to shut in the last four months, as the Moraine store closed in Marach 2026. Wendy’s has not announced that any other stores are scheduled to close. In a fourth quarter earnings call CEO Ken Cook said: “By closing consistently underperforming restaurants, we are enabling our franchisee partners to increase focus on locations with the greatest potential for profitable growth.” He added that closing around six per cent of locations under its Project Fresh program will improve profitability and franchisee economics. A veterinary practice has announced the abrupt closure of all three of its locations. Vale Veterinary Centre, which describes itself on its website as a “family-run” practice, has confirmed it ceased trading as of Monday, July 27. Its three branches – in Barry, Cardiff, and Newport – have shut with immediate effect and all forthcoming appointments have been cancelled. According to posts on the Vale Veterinary Centre Facebook page, the Barry branch had already been closed since July 13 and was set to remain shut until August. A post from earlier in the month had been advertising for a locum vet position at the Barry site, reports Wales Online. However, on Monday, a post confirmed the practice had abruptly stopped trading. Vale Veterinary Centre describes itself on its website as “one of the last independent vet centres in South Wales”. Beefeater has confirmed the closure date for all 106 of its restaurants in a move that puts 3,800 jobs at risk. The eatery, which serves up popular classics including steak and burgers, announced earlier this year that it would be shutting down. Parent company Whitbread says the move is part of a five-year plan that will see the firm achieve £250million in cost reductions. A UK supermarket titan is set to be taken over as part of a £600million deal. The move comes just weeks after Morrisons confirmed the closure of 100 stores. Realty Income Corporation, or Realty Inc, is among a small number of parties in discussions with advisers to Morrisons about a transaction. While the details of the deal are not yet publicly known, it is believed that the US group could invest £600million as part of Morrison’s ongoing search for fresh investors. A deal is, according to Sky News, not imminent but it is a sign that Morrisons is pursuing their plan to engage with a real estate advisory firm, which was flagged around six months ago. The supermarket chain previously confirmed it would be looking for a deal as they were steadily paying down debts following a CD&R takeover, Sky News reported.
