If you grew up anywhere near the San Gabriel Valley, you could probably write this cheat sheet yourself. I was lucky enough to spend nearly every summer morning seated with my grandmother at a big round table in one of the numerous dim sum halls in the SGV. This was back when nearly every restaurant serving dim sum had carts. Filled with metal steamers or glass windows boasting fried ham Sui gok or pan-fried dumplings, the carts would roll through the dining room, their handlers simultaneously dishing out helpings to diners while advertising offerings to the entire dining room. Lo bak go never tasted better than when it was fresh off the cart, the edges of the turnip cake still sizzling. I used to look for the cart with the mountain of gai lan and request extra oyster sauce for the long, leafy stalks of broccoli. A star rating of 3 out of 5. Collaborations between old pals Matt Damon and Ben Affleck are always worth watching, whether they result in classics like Good Will Hunting or could-have-beens like Air. Writer-director Joe Carnahan’s filmography has been similarly hit and miss, with bangers such as The Grey interspersed with clangers like The A-Team. A Guantanamo Bay detainee will be paid a “substantial” sum as he settles a legal claim against the UK government, his lawyers have said, as Kemi Badenoch said UK taxpayers’ cash was being handed to a “terror suspect”. Abu Zubaydah, 54, has been detained by US authorities since his capture in Pakistan 2002 in the aftermath of the 9/11 terror attacks, and in 2006 was sent to Guantanamo Bay in Cuba where he has remained ever since. Mr Zubaydah, a Palestinian born in Saudi Arabia, who was accused at the time of being a high-ranking member of al Qaeda, is said to have been tortured by the CIA, including by being waterboarded 83 times in a month, and facing beatings and extreme sleep deprivation. He brought legal action against the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office and the Home Office, as agencies liable for MI6 and MI5, as well as the attorney general.
