There’s something electric about the summer: it means freedom, holidays, frolicking, and picnics. It’s pretty much perfect, aside from of course the impending doom of hayfever and the fact you need to find the right sunscreen to wear. Should you be unfortunate enough to be afflicted by sensitive skin like me, you’ll know the struggle of trying to find an SPF that sufficiently protects you from the sun, is easy to apply, won’t pill, or break you out into hives and blemishes every time you use it. It’s enough to ruin the thrill of sitting in the sun, …

11 Best Sunscreens, WIRED Tested and Reviewed

11 Best Sunscreens, WIRED Tested and Reviewed

I wasn’t always a sunscreen devotee. Even the best sunscreens felt gross and made me break out. Like so many millennials, I didn’t understand the risks of turning into a lobster at the beach when I was in high school or of spending hours in tanning beds leading up to prom. I know better now, and thankfully, sunscreens have come a long way in terms of formula and feel. I now put it on every day, hoping to undo my sun-worshiping sins, or at least prevent any more damage. “Wearing sunscreen is so important because it protects us from harmful UV rays that can lead to sunburn, premature aging, and even skin cancer,” says Ellen Marmur, a board-certified dermatologist and founder of MMSkincare. “Because of these risks, I recommend wearing sunscreen every day. Whether you are driving your car, going to the beach, or even just going on an airplane, sunscreen plays a pivotal role in protecting your skin.” OK, so we’ve established that sunscreen is important. But once you commit to wearing it daily, …

Sali Hughes on beauty: the best tinted sunscreens deliver SPF, moisture and a spring glow all in one | Beauty

There are two things I invariably reach for at this lovely time of year: a trench coat and tinted sunscreen. The life-changing appearance of sunlight – if not quite blazing heat – means that most of us are venturing outdoors for longer periods while perhaps lightening our makeup load a little to be more seasonally appropriate. A tinted sunscreen in the right formula can kill two – or even three – birds with one stone, offering some makeup coverage, lighter moisture and high-factor sun protection in one portable product. Garnier Ambre Solaire makes lots of terrific facial sunscreens at very good prices. The newish Vitamin C Wonder Tint SPF50 (£9.99) is among their best. The pocket-friendly bottle is compact and practical if, like me, you’re …

Oh, and FYI — prices are accurate and items in stock as of time of publication. As soon as the sun comes out, kids want to run, splash, and frolic around outside – it’s only natural. And while it’s far easier to keep them occupied when there’s exploring to be done, the one inevitable struggle is finding a sun cream that they’ll let you apply, let alone one that doesn’t break them out in a horrible rash. Then there’s the sun protection factor to think about, and whether they’ll be able to splash around without getting horribly burnt. It’s a minefield! To save you from having to deal with weeks of scratching and spending unfathomable amounts of money testing different formulas out, we’ve asked a paediatric dermatologist …

9 Best Face Sunscreens Our Editors Tested and Loved in 2026

9 Best Face Sunscreens Our Editors Tested and Loved in 2026

Face Sunscreen vs. Body Sunscreen: The difference between face sunscreen and body sunscreen is roughly analogous to the difference between face wash and body wash. The sensitive skin of your face requires a gentler formula than that of the body, and should be formulated to be mindful of things like acne, anti-aging efforts, oil accumulation and sensitive areas around the eyes. Face sunscreens are often oil-free to prevent clogged pores and aggressive sweating, as well as fragrance-free to prevent redness and irritation. Body sunscreens, on the other hand, don’t usually take the same precautions, so they’re packaged in bigger containers with just the necessary ingredients. Many products are dual-purpose, though, and can be applied to the face and body: “A body sunscreen can be safe for facial use if it is non-comedogenic (won’t clog pores), free of heavy fragrances, and formulated for sensitive skin,” says Sangvhi. “Check for labels indicating it’s suitable for use on the face or for sensitive skin.” Face Sunscreen vs SPF Moisturizer: So, what is the difference between a face sunscreen …

Sunscreens made from ground-up wood reach an SPF of over 180

Sunscreens made from ground-up wood reach an SPF of over 180

The hunt for more natural sunscreens is on Amparo Garcia/Shutterstock Sunscreens enhanced with lignin, a component of wood, can have sun protection factors (SPFs) that exceed 180. They also seem to last longer and penetrate less into the skin than existing products, potentially making them safer. Sunscreens are an important defence against skin cancer, but, in recent years, there has been growing unease and confusion regarding their safety. A recent US survey found that 14 per cent of young adults think that daily sunscreen use is more harmful than direct sun exposure. This has arisen since the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) published research showing that several common sunscreen ingredients can get through the skin into the bloodstream. This doesn’t necessarily mean they are harmful, and long-term studies haven’t found risks associated with daily sunscreen use, but the FDA has called for more research to investigate. In the meantime, scientists are searching for natural alternatives to existing sunscreen chemicals that may be safer for human health, while also being less harmful to coral and …
