From childhood to adulthood, musicians show small but reliable advantages in sustained attention

Learning a musical instrument may sharpen attention and vigilance from childhood through adulthood, according to new research published in the British Journal of Psychology. Researchers have long debated whether mentally demanding activities—such as playing chess, learning a language, or practising a musical instrument—can enhance general cognitive abilities, such as attention and vigilance, which naturally develop with age. Musical training has been seen as a promising candidate because it requires sustained focus, complex coordination, and multitasking. However, much of the earlier evidence comparing musicians and non-musicians is difficult to interpret. These groups often differ in background factors like education, socioeconomic status, and personality, making it difficult to determine whether observed differences can be attributed to musical training itself, or instead reflect the pre‑existing characteristics of individuals who are more likely to pursue music. A research team led by Rafael Román-Caballero of the University of Granada in Spain sought to address this selection bias. The scientists recruited 420 participants between the ages of 8 and 34, drawing from two independent groups—one of Spanish children and adolescents, and …

Applied Materials sees quarterly revenue above estimates on sustained AI spending

Applied Materials sees quarterly revenue above estimates on sustained AI spending

May 14 : Applied Materials on Thursday forecast third-quarter revenue and adjusted profit above Wall Street estimates, betting that heavy spending on data centers and AI infrastructure will sustain strong demand for its chip-making tools. Shares of the Santa Clara, California-based company, which also beat second-quarter revenue and profit estimates, rose 3 per cent in extended trading. The ongoing AI boom is benefiting equipment suppliers such as Applied Materials, as building more powerful AI chips requires not only more silicon wafers but also complex manufacturing processes. “With rising demand and increasing long-term visibility from customers, we see an exceptionally strong foundation for sustained multi-year revenue and profit growth,” CEO Gary Dickerson said on a post-earnings call. The company expects over 30 per cent growth in its semiconductor equipment business and a more than 50 per cent increase in packaging revenues for 2026. The surge in AI computing investment from leading technology firms and enterprises is pushing chipmakers such as TSMC and Samsung to expand their manufacturing capacity, boosting orders for Applied’s sophisticated equipment used to …

Study links psilocybin receptor activation to sustained structural brain changes

Study links psilocybin receptor activation to sustained structural brain changes

A new study published in the Journal of Psychopharmacology sheds light on how psilocybin, the psychoactive compound found in certain mushrooms, may produce anti-depressant effects. Researchers suggest that its benefits could be linked to specific patterns of serotonin receptor activity and increased flexibility in brain cells. In recent years, clinical trials have shown that psilocybin can produce rapid and lasting improvements in symptoms of major depressive disorder, sometimes after only one or two treatment sessions. Despite promising results, scientists still have limited understanding of the biological mechanisms that allow psilocybin to produce such long-lasting effects. One theory lies in the way psilocybin interacts with the brain’s serotonin system. The compound activates a serotonin receptor known as the 5-HT2A receptor, which is widely believed to play a central role in the psychedelic experience. However, researchers have not fully understood how activation of this receptor leads to changes in mood and behavior that may persist long after the drug’s immediate effects have worn off. To investigate this question, a team led by Connor J. Maltby (Ulysses Neuroscience, …

Indonesia minister says sustained high oil prices could see budget deficit breach mandated limit

Indonesia minister says sustained high oil prices could see budget deficit breach mandated limit

JAKARTA: Indonesia’s senior economic minister said on Friday (Mar 13) that the country may impose additional taxes on certain commodities, such as palm oil, if the government needs to reduce the impact on the budget from rising global oil prices. Airlangga Hartarto, speaking at a briefing of the national cabinet, said Indonesia, a global commodities powerhouse and the world’s largest producer of palm oil and nickel, could also impose additional taxes on nickel, gold, and copper. At the briefing, President Prabowo Subianto said austerity measures could be taken to reduce the impact of rising global oil prices. Airlangga said government modelling showed that if the Iran war caused oil prices to stay high, it would be difficult to keep the fiscal deficit under a legal mandate of 3 per cent of GDP without cutting spending or reducing economic growth. “These are scenarios we may have to discuss,” he said, and spoke about the option to issue an emergency order if the deficit limit needed to be breached. He said the government had forecast three scenarios to predict how the …

Mastercard profit beats estimates on sustained consumer spending

Jan 29 : Mastercard beat Wall Street expectations for fourth-quarter profit on Thursday, as resilient spending on travel, leisure and everyday essentials boosted transaction volumes for the payment processor. Spending has largely held up despite concerns of economic uncertainty fueled by U.S. President Donald Trump’s trade policies, sticky inflation and a sluggish labor market. Shoppers also locked in deals to stretch their discretionary budgets during the holiday quarter, lifting transaction volumes for payment processors. Mastercard’s gross dollar volume, the value of all transactions processed on its platform, rose 7 per cent in the quarter. The company also reported a 14 per cent jump in cross-border volumes, a metric that tracks spending on cards outside the country they were issued in. Shares of the company rose 2.5 per cent in premarket trading. CONSUMER SPENDING RESILIENT Household spending has remained resilient, as consumers continue to prioritize necessities, while high earners show little sign of pulling back on discretionary purchases.
