‘The Shards’ Season Two? FX Show Tests Ryan Murphy’s Sway at Disney

‘The Shards’ Season Two? FX Show Tests Ryan Murphy’s Sway at Disney

As The Shards hit screens in early August, Ryan Murphy spoke about how he and author Bret Easton Ellis saw the series potentially running for several seasons. It will have to get to season two first — and on that front, The Shards remains in limbo. Three-plus weeks out from the season finale, which ended on a sizable cliffhanger, there’s been no word from FX on the show’s status. That’s not necessarily a bad sign: The Disney-owned outlet has been known to take its time on renewal decisions. Pickups for Adults and The Lowdown, to name two recent critically acclaimed shows, came months after their first seasons ended. FX and Murphy also seem to have an understanding that when he’s ready with an idea, they’re ready to back it. Two-plus years passed between the last season of American Horror Story and the one that premiered Sept. 24. There was a nearly seven-year gap between seasons one and two of Feud. Those are anthology series, however, and one season doesn’t necessarily flow directly from the previous …

Anthropic investor Lonsdale says AI firms stoking fear to sway policy

AUSTIN, Sept 25 : Joe Lonsdale, an investor in Anthropic and the co-founder of technology company Palantir, said on Friday that efforts by some leading artificial intelligence companies to warn of existential risks from AI amounted to a dangerous attempt to shape public policy.  Lonsdale, also founder of venture capital firm 8VC, criticized what he described as efforts by people close to Anthropic and at OpenAI to fund outside groups advocating stronger AI regulation, which he argued could help a small number of leading companies shape the rules governing the industry and entrench their market power.  “I think that what OpenAI and Anthropic are pushing right now is very dangerous, and we don’t want an oligopoly that controls all of our policy here with the government,” Lonsdale said at the Reuters Momentum AI Austin event.  “Safety is a real thing, but fear and regulation — we’ve got to be really careful how we respond to those things.” Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman and Elon Musk, who heads SpaceX, have all this month called for …

US Supreme Court hands wealthy donors more sway with latest decision | Explainer News

The United States Supreme Court’s decision to lift limits on how much political parties can spend in coordination with a candidate will provide greater flexibility for political fundraising. The court on Tuesday ruled in the Federal Election Commission (FEC) v The National Republican Senatorial Committee (NRSC) case, which overturned a more than 50-year-old federal election law that limited coordinated spending efforts between political parties and their candidates. Recommended Stories list of 4 itemsend of list Unlike super political action committees (super PACs), which are prohibited from coordinating directly with campaigns and instead spend independently on advertisements supporting or opposing candidates or ballot initiatives, political parties can coordinate directly with candidates’ campaigns. Because of that coordination, spending by political parties has historically been subject to federal campaign spending limits. The court ultimately decided that restricting spending is an act of limiting free speech, which is a violation of the First Amendment of the US Constitution. The high court ruled in favour of the National Republican Senatorial Committee (NRSC) in the case with a vote of 6-3. …

French Central Bank Succession Fight Tests Macron’s Sway Ahead of 2027 Election

French Central Bank Succession Fight Tests Macron’s Sway Ahead of 2027 Election

By Elizabeth Pineau and Leigh Thomas PARIS, May 14 (Reuters) – French President Emmanuel Macron faces a test next week when lawmakers decide whether to approve his former chief of staff to run the central bank, a nomination some critics say is part of a campaign to protect key institutions from a possible far-right election win in 2027. A rejection of Emmanuel Moulin would represent an embarrassing defeat, underlining the unpopular president’s lame-duck status less than a year before his second term ends. Meanwhile, approval would likely fuel rivals’ accusations that Macron is installing loyalists ‌to top jobs who can ensure his legacy and ‌hedge against possible National Rally (RN) victory in the next presidential vote. “The president is right to propose (Moulin’s) appointment, as it is technically justified, but he is taking a political risk should the proposal be rejected by parliament, given that he no longer has a majority,” said political analyst William Thay of think tank Le Millenaire. MOULIN IS EXPERIENCED ECONOMIC POLICYMAKER Opponents on the finance committees of both houses could …

Kremlin factions battle to sway Putin as economy sinks and discontent rises

When Ilya Remeslo, a longtime Kremlin attack lawyer and propagandist, first turned against Vladimir Putin in March, posting publicly that the Russian president should resign and be brought to justice as “a war criminal and a thief,” the Russian authorities rapidly carted Remeslo off — against his will — to a St. Petersburg psychiatric hospital. Persuasion not pressure will sway Orbán on Ukraine loan, EU hopes – POLITICO

Persuasion not pressure will sway Orbán on Ukraine loan, EU hopes – POLITICO

Orbán threw the EU’s entire support package for Ukraine into doubt last weekend when he said he would block a €90 billion loan crucial to Ukraine’s wartime survival — as well as the EU’s 20th package of sanctions against Ukraine — unless the pipeline was repaired and oil once again started flowing to Hungary and Slovakia. The EU is caught between Kyiv’s looming cash crunch and avoiding giving the Hungarian leader a political gift, as they are wary Orbán could weaponize a legal showdown on the campaign trail. Ukraine could run out of money by April — the same month Hungarians head to the polls. Orbán’s move prompted outrage across the EU, with European Council President António Costa warning in a letter earlier this week that the Hungarian leader had violated the EU’s principle of “sincere cooperation.” That hinted at potential legal retribution, which could take the form of a so-called Article 7 procedure to strip Budapest of its EU voting rights. But the four diplomats and a senior EU official, all of whom were …

Will calls to ‘abolish ICE’ sway voters in 2026? The strategy has Democrats split : NPR

Jim Vondruska/Getty Images hide caption toggle caption Jim Vondruska/Getty Images The killings of Alex Pretti and Renee Macklin Good in Minneapolis have renewed a long-running debate among Democrats over how best to address immigration enforcement, and whether advocating for “abolishing ICE” fits into a winning political playbook. It is a debate that has taken on new urgency among Democrats against a backdrop of bipartisan backlash to the Trump administration’s deportation efforts, led by Immigration and Customs Enforcement. Critics on both the left and the right say the fatal shootings of two U.S. citizens by federal officers last month show the administration has gone too far. For Democrats, the events in Minneapolis have created an opening ahead of this year’s midterm election to shift the conversation on immigration — a notable change after struggling to message on the issue in the 2024 election. But internal divides over what to do about ICE could complicate the …
