Lionsgate confirmed on Tuesday that production for The Housemaid’s Secret will commence later this year. The follow-up will draw from the second installment of Freida McFadden’s bestselling book trilogy. The psychological thriller, directed by Paul Feig, has proven a holiday box-office sensation, accumulating over $75 million domestically and $33 million globally within 17 days. Its production budget was a modest $35 million. Lionsgate intends for Feig and Sweeney to return for The Housemaid’s Secret, with Sweeney also taking on an executive producer role. After a bumpy 2025, the new year is off to a good start at the domestic box office, thanks to a varied menu of holiday titles that moviegoers are continuing to feast on before schools and college resume and extended work vacations end. Indeed, New Year’s weekend revenue looks to be a post-pandemic best. Leading the pack, of course, is James Cameron’s Avatar: Fire and Ash, which flew past the $1 billion mark at the global box office on Saturday. Disney and 20th Century will announce full details Sunday morning. It’s another notch in Cameron’s belt, who already directed three of the four biggest movies of all time at the global box office, led by Avatar and followed by Avatar: The Way of Water and Titanic. Avatar 3‘s global earnings through New Year’s Day (Thursday) were a mighty $935 million, including $266 million domestically and $699 overseas. Terry Sweeney broke ground as Saturday Night Live‘s first out gay castmember during that program’s 1985-86 season.  Now Sweeney, 75, is breaking his silence on a decades-long feud with Chevy Chase after Chase proposed Sweeney appear in an SNL sketch mocking the AIDS epidemic. The ignominious chapter is one of several revisited in I’m Chevy Chase and You’re Not, a new documentary about the comedian set to premiere Jan. 1. In the film, director Marina Zenovich reminds Chase of the joke that offended Sweeney, best remembered for his lacerating impression of then-first lady Nancy Reagan. “You said something to Sweeney like, ‘Oh, you’re the gay guy. Why don’t we ask if you have AIDS. And every week, we weigh you,’” she said. Of the joke, SNL creator Lorne Michaels then explains, “I think Chevy was just being Chevy. He would say things that were funny, and he would assume you were comedy people, and he could speak that way.
