Kazakhstan Films Make SXSW London 2026 Splash With No Need for Borat

If you think that film from Kazakhstan equals Borat, the fictional character created by Sacha Baron Cohen, you may want to think again – and come out to the Screen Festival at SXSW London 2026 for the latest cinematic evidence. After all, Kazakhstan is back in town and ready to make a splash. Anna Bogutskaya, the head of screen at SXSW London, and her team have booked an eclectic mix of theatrical and series offerings. But Kazakhstani cinema features more prominently than most would expect from the Central Asian country with a population of about 21 million. “We’ve got two features from Kazakhstan this year,” which both get to celebrate their U.K. premieres at the fest, highlights Bogutskaya, along with a short. “That is a territory that is just exploding. There’s so much [going on].” The one film is Zhannat Alshanova’s debut feature Becoming, about teenage swimmer Mila (portrayed by Tamiris Zhangazinova), who takes care of the family home and her kid sister while her mother pursues affairs and opportunities. The second edition of SXSW London is nearly upon us, with Virginia Woolf’s Night and Day, starring Haley Bennett, Jack Whitehall, Lily Allen, Timothy Spall, Jennifer Saunders, Sally Phillips, Misia Butler and Elyas M’Barek, opening the 2026 Screen Festival on Monday, June 1. The rom-com from director Tina Gharavi and screenwriter Justine Waddell is an adaptation of Virginia Woolf’s novel Night and Day. But the movie is just one of a few dozen, along with short films, that are unspooling in the British capital throughout the June 1-6 event. Peter Glanz’s darkly satirical Savage House, whose cast includes Richard E. SXSW London announced the latest wave of speakers for its 2026 festival lineup, taking place June 1-6. Kicking off the first week of June, the second SXSW London will take place at Shoreditch in East London, promising unique, informative experiences across business, tech, music, film, and TV. It was announced Wednesday that former First Lady Michelle Obama and her brother, Craig Robinson, are set for a live recording of their podcast IMO with Michelle Obama and Craig Robinson. Other speakers will include London Mayor Sadiq Khan, actress Claire Foy, journalist and host Piers Morgan, CEO & Team Principal, Oracle Red Bull Racing Laurent Mekies, svp of corporate marketing for Oracle Dave Rosenberg, Olympian Max Whitlock OBE and strategic communications advisor & cultural strategist Zara Rahim.
