Prime minister Andy Burnham insisted he would not shy away from criticising Trump if it was in Britain’s national interest to do so. Andy Burnham has refused to say that he trusts Donald Trump. The new prime minister insisted he would not shy away from criticising the US president if it was in Britain’s national interest to do so. He said the two men enjoyed a “warm” phone conversation last Monday after he entered No.10 for the first time. But asked by the BBC’s Laura Kuenssberg if he thinks he can trust Trump, Burnham would not give a direct answer. He said: “I’ve had one phone call, and I always treat people as I find them. “It was a good exchange and it was a warm exchange. Billionaire media mogul Barry Diller doesn’t think OpenAI CEO Sam Altman is untrustworthy, despite recent reporting to the contrary. On stage at The Wall Street Journal’s “Future of Everything” conference this week, Diller vouched for the AI exec, who has been accused by some former colleagues and board members of being manipulative and deceptive at times. Diller, who is friendly with Altman, was responding to a question about whether or not people should put their faith in Altman to ensure that artificial intelligence benefits humanity. In particular, he was asked about the theoretical form of AI known as Artificial General Intelligence, or AGI, which could one day outperform humans on any task. The media exec, a co-founder of Fox Broadcasting and chairman of IAC and Expedia Group, said that while he believes Altman is sincere in his pursuits, that’s not really the area of concern people should be focused on. The number of trusts over £1 million in the red has almost doubled in a year as leaders warn it is “tougher than ever” to keep pace with increased costs. Overall, eighty-three trusts running 293 academies had deficits by the end of 2024-25, Schools Week analysis has found, narrowly down on 12 months before. But seven are now saddled with seven-figure holes in their budgets, up from four a year earlier. The highest is £9.2 million. Source link

The last few weeks have been potentially defining ones for the academy trust sector. However, there are mixed messages emerging that are hard to resolve, placing the trust sector at an inflection point. Some could well be forgiven for thinking we’ve been here before. The new education white paper has set out the government’s commitment to an “all academy” sector. It’s not the first white paper to make this pledge. However, whilst a predictable policy for a pro-academy Conservative government, this presents as a radical leap for a Labour one once considered, at most, “agnostic” about academies. When it comes to trusts, however, three things in particular make this white paper different. The first is visionary – that trusts will be encouraged to be (in my words) community centred organisations. This is, happily, reinforced – to a degree – by something we at Forum Strategy have championed for some time: pure accountability, the notion that trusts and their end users should be collectively responsible to one another, locally, in shared endeavour. Five NHS trusts with “deep-rooted challenges” will be the first to be placed in a new recovery programme, the health secretary has announced. Wes Streeting said “failure has been tolerated for too long”, and although there has been improvement across the NHS overall, some “challenged” trusts continue to struggle. The new NHS Intensive Recovery programme has identified trusts at the bottom of the NHS league tables where patients face the longest waits, there is high leadership “churn” and there are persistent financial problems. Beginning in April, these trusts will kick off the programme: • North Cumbria Integrated Care NHS Foundation Trust • Mid and South Essex NHS Foundation Trust • Hull University Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust • Northern Lincolnshire and Goole NHS Foundation Trust • East Kent Hospitals NHS Trust.
