The safest password is the one you never type

The safest password is the one you never type

Passwords are a mess, and they always have been. I use a password manager, and it makes the whole having to remember 1,400 logins much easier, but even then, it could be easier. Well, the good news is that it can be much easier, with one simple answer: passkeys. While passkeys sound like a rebranding exercise, they’re actually the future of password security, and it’s high time you started making the switch. Related I use the same login protection Google trusts for its own staff I stopped using passwords and switched to the same physical login protection Google uses internally for daily accounts. So what actually is a passkey? It’s not another password, thankfully Tashreef Shareef / MakeUseOfCredit: Tashreef Shareef / MakeUseOf A passkey is a pair of cryptographic keys. One key is stored on the site or app’s server, and one key is stored on your device. When the login box appears for a given site or service, instead of using your password, you use this cryptographic key pairing instead. Now, that sounds confusing, right? …

The best face sunscreens in the UK: 10 lightweight, non-greasy SPFs for every skin type – tested | Skincare

There’s nothing quite like the warmth of the sun on your face after a long, dreary winter. But before you bask in it, you should always apply an SPF. That’s especially true if you use vitamin C and retinol serums, which can increase your vulnerability to sun damage. If you’re not wearing an SPF every day, you might as well toss the rest of your skincare out of the window. The Guardian’s journalism is independent. We will earn a commission if you buy something through an affiliate link. Learn more. As well as the risk of sunburn, UV rays cause longer-lasting, deeper skin damage, resulting in age spots, pigmentation and premature ageing. But if the thought of slathering sticky sunscreens on your face every day makes you want to spend your life in perpetual shade, you’ve come to the right place. Dedicated facial SPFs are designed to feel weightless, sit well under makeup and leave no trace on the skin, so you can skip that ghostly white cast or looking like a greasy mess. I’ve spent …

Ugandans Rue Link to Bundibugyo, the Ebola Virus Type Named After a District of Cocoa Farmers

Ugandans Rue Link to Bundibugyo, the Ebola Virus Type Named After a District of Cocoa Farmers

KAMPALA, Uganda (AP) — Boon-dee-BOO-joh. Before it became the somewhat easy-to-mispronounce name of a rare type of Ebola virus, Bundibugyo is a mountainous district in western Uganda that even some locals would struggle to pinpoint on a map. It’s home to roughly 200,000 people. Many are cocoa farmers who search for whatever cultivable land they can find in the impossibly steep landscape of hills and valleys marking Uganda’s border with Congo. As an example of the classic village idyll, Bundibugyo is a beautiful place. Yet it now trends for an unpleasant reason, making some Ugandans rue Bundibugyo’s association with the current Ebola outbreak, which has infected hundreds of people in eastern Congo. There are 160 suspected Ebola deaths in two provinces. Virus type discovered in 2007 The Ugandan district’s connection to the Bundibugyo virus stems from an Ebola outbreak there nearly two decades ago that was flagged as a new species of Ebola, a viral disease that usually manifests as hemorrhagic fever. The outbreak wasn’t the Sudan virus, named for the area in present-day South …

This is the only type of keyboard that I wouldn’t recommend to anyone

This is the only type of keyboard that I wouldn’t recommend to anyone

There are tons of keyboards available in all different shapes and sizes to cater to whatever your typing needs might be. It doesn’t matter if you want to fly through documents at 150 words per minute or type on the go with a lightweight Bluetooth keyboard; chances are there’s something out there that’s meant for what you want. However, just because these keyboards exist, that doesn’t mean they’re any good. The basic premise of a keyboard is to type, and if it fails at that, the portability, battery life, looks, or compatibility won’t matter. Unfortunately, that’s how I learnt that folding keyboards aren’t my cup of tea, and I wouldn’t recommend them to anyone either. Related I Massively Overspent on a Mechanical Keyboard—Don’t Do What I Did I fell down the mechanical keyboard rabbit hole. Hard. Folding keyboards are not what you think you’re buying The reality behind the hype and marketing Now there are tons of different folding keyboards available on the market, from cheap ones that you can buy on an impulse to …

Stop Guessing Which Cooking Oil to Use. Experts Explain When to Use Each Type

Stop Guessing Which Cooking Oil to Use. Experts Explain When to Use Each Type

If you’re simply guessing which oil to use for whatever’s on tonight’s menu, you might be sabotaging your own meal. And worse, you could be wasting expensive olive or walnut oil only to watch it burn up in the air fryer or under the broiler’s fierce heat. Not all oils are created equal. That expensive variety you drizzle over a salad may not be built for searing, and it’s affecting your recipe’s final taste, along with your monthly food budget.  High-heat cooking methods such as frying or searing are best done with neutral oils that feature a higher smoke point — canola, avocado or grapeseed, to name a few. Olive oil and lower smoke point oils shine in dressings, slow cooking and sautes, where the rich flavor can stand out without burning and enhance the protein or vegetables.  For baking, some oils also lend moisture, while others add nutrition or depth when left uncooked. To get the skinny on cooking oils, I asked culinary experts to share tips and advice on when to use each oil so …

New type of stainless steel pulls hydrogen directly out of seawater

New type of stainless steel pulls hydrogen directly out of seawater

Green hydrogen has long been sold as one of the clean energy economy’s most important tools. It can be made by splitting water with electricity from renewable sources, then used in industries that are hard to clean up, from fertilizer production to steelmaking. The problem is that making it at scale still costs too much, and some of the equipment wears down too fast. A research team at the University of Hong Kong says it may have found a way around both problems with a new kind of stainless steel designed for hydrogen systems. Called SS-H2, the material was developed under the leadership of Professor Mingxin Huang. The team says it combines the corrosion resistance needed for harsh electrolysis conditions with a much lower cost than the titanium components commonly used today. If that holds up in wider industrial use, it could reshape a part of the hydrogen business that has quietly held the sector back. In many proton exchange membrane, or PEM, electrolysis systems, manufacturers rely on titanium coated with precious metals such as …

AI Is Making A Specific Type Of Person Feel Brilliant But Experts Say That’s Actually The Problem

AI Is Making A Specific Type Of Person Feel Brilliant But Experts Say That’s Actually The Problem

In all seriousness, though, AI has been making some people feel brilliant, and some experts say it’s an issue. Saying someone is brilliant, as defined by Dictionary.com, is to describe them as exhibiting both an exceptional intellect and intelligence. In other words, having the capacity to learn something while also being able to delve deep into it using abstract and reflective reasoning.  According to experts, however, people who lack self-awareness get duped by the ease and perceived importance surrounding the onslaught of information. Unfortunately, they lack the ability to sift through the slop, so to speak, and use it as a tool instead of a crutch. AI makes people who lack self-awareness feel brilliant, but experts say that’s a problem. People who lack self-awareness are generally unable to distinguish the level of their own abilities. This could mean anything from overthinking an interaction the other person has already forgotten to believing that one can indeed run a marathon without training for it. While it may not look very great on its surface, lacking self-awareness can …

11 Underrated Sneakers Under $150 for Every Type of Summer Activity

Summer is primetime for sneakers. The weather allows for virtually every option, nearly all wardrobe formality disappears, and there’s a notable paucity of slush, grime, and other pitfalls to be wary of. Yes, we understand we’re breaking neither news nor ground here. What we are doing, though, is digging through the digital shelves to find the absolute best sneakers you can find for under $150, because we do follow the news. We’re talking low-profile bangers, off-road warriors, extremely-hinged hybrids (and some that are a little unhinged, too); sneakers to wear every day and ones to pepper in; reinvigorated classics and new-age stunners. And because sneakers also can have the added benefit of affordability, we thought we’d make that a requirement. So, nothing on this list is more than $150, which means you can wear anything below as intended: into the goddamn ground. You never need our—or anyone else’s—permission to buy some new Chuck 70s, Vans Authentics, Adidas Sambas or Reebok Club Cs. We endorse those ad infinitum and, while we will remind you of their …
