UK households urged to ‘switch off and unplug’ appliances on Tuesday | UK | News

It’s another scorcher today and more hot weather is set to bake the UK again on Tuesday, the Met Office has forecast. A record breaking few days of sizzling weather will draw to an end from Wednesday, but for now, we’re all still struggling to exist in our thick, well insulated British houses, let alone work, rest or sleep. That’s why many of us will be looking to do whatever we can to cut the heat and keep our homes as cool as they possibly can be for as long as this hot spell lasts. According to charity The Red Cross, one way to cut heat in your home is to unplug and switch off appliances.This is because various appliances, especially electronics like TVs, games consoles, PCs and kitchen appliances, continue to use up electricity and produce heat when left plugged in and on standby. The Red Cross says in its guidance: “Even when in standby mode, electrical items can generate heat. Make sure any in the bedroom are turned off and unplugged.” It adds: …

Met Office declares hottest-ever May day as UK heatwave hits 33.5C | Weather | News

The Met Office has announced temperatures hit 33.5C at Heathrow today, May 25 – beating the all-time May record. That provisionally further extends the record for the UK’s hottest May day, which was broken just under half an hour ago. Under an hour ago 32.9C was recorded at Heathrow and since the temperature has risen further to over 33C. This makes it not only the hottest May day on record, but also the hottest bank holiday Monday ever recorded, surpassing the 33.3C reached during the August bank holiday in 2019. The previous May record stood at 32.8C, according to the Met Office. It is highly likely we will continue to see the temperature rise over the next few hours, an eye watering 35C is forecast in Lincolnshire, the Midlands, western parts of East Anglia and southwards into the London area. The boiling weather will continue into tomorrow with a rapid rise in temperatures through the morning.
