Major UK airport to close down with no more flights – in business since 1936 | UK | News

Coventry Airport is preparing to close its doors later this year, with the UK Civil Aviation Authority confirming it will cease operations from June 2026. Many locals have made their feelings known about the closure, reflecting on the airport’s storied past and the potential impact on nearby businesses and the broader community. Firms operating at the airport have been told they must vacate the site by May 2026. A CAA spokesperson said: “Coventry Aerodrome has given formal notice to us of its plan to close the airport permanently with effect from 11 June 2026.” The site, originally founded in 1936 as Baginton Aerodrome, served as RAF Baginton, a fighter airfield during the Second World War. Over the decades, it has handled freight, light aircraft, and occasional commercial flights. Coventry Airport also played host to a Papal visit in 1982, when Pope John Paul II toured the UK and drew an estimated 350,000 people to the site. One resident remarked to Coventry Live: “All the people who are moaning about the closure are probably the same …

Anyone staying in a hotel this Easter told ‘leave bowls of water out’ | UK | News

BBC doctor urges anyone staying in hotels at Easter to leave bowls of water around (Image: Getty) With spring in full swing and the Easter bank holiday on the horizon, many Brits will be embarking on getaways. For those planning a hotel stay, BBC Morning Live’s resident doctor, Dr Punam Krisham, has offered advice she urges people to take to minimise the risk of falling ill, as she predicts there will likely be a “spike after the Easter holidays”. Explaining why infections often surge “every time the seasons change”, Dr Punam attributes this largely to fluctuations in temperature and air pressure, which cause “viruses and bacteria spread a lot quicker”. The NHS GP also noted that, naturally, people are “mingling more” and “young children and people are travelling”, reports the Mirror. Dr Punam informed viewers: “We’ve got Easter holidays, we fully expect a bit of a spike after the Easter holidays. And, there is this thing called a stacking effect. “So what will happen is, because there are so many viral things circulating, people feel …

The skincare and fragrance company also paused all its online orders. Now, in a dramatic turnaround, the company has sent an email to customers announcing that its online store has reopened. It read: “We missed you. We’re now accepting orders. Be the first to shop before we officially go live. Thank you for your patience while we’ve been on pause.” Now, the online store does appear to be taking orders again. Malin + Goetz had stores in Spitalfields, Canary Wharf, Seven Dials, Soho, Islington, Battersea Power Station, and Borough Yards. Sky News reports that the notice was lodged on Tuesday this week. Beauty Bay has also shut down its website, displaying the following statement on its homepage: “We’ll Be Back Soon. UK’s ‘prettiest street’ to get £4.4m makeover to make more beautiful | UK | News

The UK’s ‘prettiest street’ is set to get £4.4m for a makeover to make it even more beautiful. The west London high street has featured in hit British films like Notting Hill and Paddington. Plans to “modernise” Portobello Road were recently approved during a Kensington and Chelsea Council meeting. Councillors agreed to spend on upgrading the pavements, lighting and greenery. Other upgrades will see new dropped kerbs installed for wheelchair access, additional parking bays created, and existing anti-terror barriers swapped out for sliding bollards. The council stated that funding for the makeover will come from the Community Infrastructure Levy, which is collected from developers. They added that no money will be taken from other services to pay for the high street’s reinvention. The revamp is due to start in January 2027. Other changes to the area include the council’s plans to use a system called Hydrorock to mitigate flooding, according to the Local Democracy Reporting Service, following the area’s floods in 2021. The switch from anti-terror barriers to sliding bollards comes after Portobello Road residents took …

Notorious killer farmer left £2.5m fortune to pub landlady he met after prison | UK | News

Tony Martin and Jacqueline Wadsley (Image: undefined) Tony Martin, the farmer infamous for killing a teenage burglar, left his entire £2.5m estate to a pub landlady he befriended after he was released from prison, it has been revealed. The reclusive Mr Martin, who passed away last year at the age of 80, formed a close relationship with Jacqueline Wadsley – known as Jacqui – after his murder conviction for shooting Fred Barrass was overturned. The pair met at the Hare and Hounds pub where Mr Martin would often drink and Jacqui, now 52, served as manager for over a decade. The pub is a short drive from Bleak House, the notorious location where Mr Martin killed 16-year-old Fred with a pump-action shotgun on 20 August 1999. Despite his past and conviction, it’s said that Mr Martin and Jacqui “became like father and daughter”, and she was deeply affected by his death in February last year. Probate documents now reveal that Mr Martin bequeathed his entire estate – totalling £2,567,795 – to Jacqui and her husband, …

UK delivery company closing down for good – parcels not delivered | UK | News

Evri has experienced delivery disruptions following the unexpected collapse of a partner courier company. The firm has attributed delays in a UK city to the abrupt failure of its collaborator, Pedal and Post. Pedal and Post has announced it is “ceasing trading without notice”. Evri had utilised the service for deliveries within Oxford’s Clean Air Zone, leaving residents in the city now facing interruptions and hold-ups. Carol Leonard, a Grandpont, Oxford resident, reported that multiple parcels – ordered in late January – had failed to arrive. The packages contained specialist food for her cat along with litter, and despite being dispatched for delivery, they remained stuck at the depot. The items were ultimately delivered on February 10 – a fortnight after her orders were placed. An Evri spokesperson commented: “We successfully deliver more than 900 million parcels each year, with industry-leading on-time delivery rates. “We were disappointed to learn that our e-cargo bike delivery partner in Oxford ceased trading without notice, which caused some temporary disruption for a small number of customers in the local …
