Two children in England have died from measles this year, health officials have said. The tragic deaths come as the UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) warned the highly infectious virus continues to circulate across the country, with outbreaks earlier this year driving a rise in cases. Latest figures show that 736 laboratory-confirmed measles cases were recorded in England between January 1 and June 8, 2026, compared with 959 cases during the whole of 2025. A further 106 cases have been confirmed since the last UKHSA update two weeks ago, including a recent case linked to an Amazon warehouse in Gateshead, where health officials urged staff to check their vaccination status and remain alert for symptoms. Most infections have been among unvaccinated children aged 10 and under. Measles activity increased earlier this year, mainly because of outbreaks in London and the West Midlands. Over the past four weeks, the highest levels of activity have been also been recorded in the East of England, as well as London and the West Midlands.
