BIRMINGHAM, England, May 15 : Ollie Watkins scored twice as Aston Villa eased to a 4-2 Premier League victory over Liverpool on Friday to seal Champions League qualification for next season and leave their visitors looking over their shoulder at the chasing pack. The win moves Villa into fourth place with 62 points from their 37 games, leapfrogging their opponents, who have 59 points from the same number of matches. Liverpool remain vulnerable to being caught by both Bournemouth and Brighton & Hove Albion in the race for a Champions League place as they slipped to a 12th defeat of the season with a single point from the last nine available. Morgan Rogers gave Villa a first half lead before Virgil van Dijk equalised for Liverpool early in the second period and then got another in added time. But Watkins’ double and a brilliant late fourth from John McGinn sealed the win for Unai Emery’s side, who head into Wednesday’s Europa League final against Freiburg in buoyant mood. “We had to get over line,” McGinn …
Paedophile Ian Watkins was fatally stabbed by a man who had designs on being “famous”, according to the prosecutor in the murder trial. The former singer in Pontypridd rock band Lostprophets was killed while serving a 29-year prison sentence for child sexual abuse offences, including the attempted rape of a fan’s baby. Two men – Rico Gedel, 25, also known as Rashid, and Samuel Dodsworth, 43 – are standing trial accused of murdering Watkins in HMP Wakefield last October. The killing was the second time Watkins had been attacked while serving time in the west Yorkshire prison. On the first day of the trial, Leeds Crown Court heard Watkins, 48, was stabbed with a makeshift weapon before being found in his jail cell covered in blood and in a critical condition. You can read our live updates from court here. Tom Storey KC, prosecuting, said CCTV footage from 9.19am on the day of the killing showed Gedel entering Watkins’ cell while Dodsworth was allegedly keeping watch at the top of a nearby flight of stairs. …

“They are fantastic players and fantastic competitors,” said Unai Emery, as second-placed Villa moved to within three points of Arsenal and 12 ahead of Chelsea in fifth. “Their focus and desire to improve things, their commitment to the club is massive. “That commitment is huge, the same as the connection with supporters and the work and the standards they set every day. “They are so professional in everything that they do, not just on the pitch but every day at the training ground and behind the scenes too.” Allied to the contribution of Watkins and Rogers, which ensured Forest’s mistakes did not go unpunished and prevented Sean Dyche’s men from growing in confidence, John McGinn shone with a second-half double as Villa bounced back from Tuesday’s defeat at the Emirates. “We won today and are playing well,” Emery continued, doing his best to downplay suggestions that Villa are genuine contenders. “Of course, our target is Europe but it’s one step at a time.” While Villa peer excitedly towards the future, Forest appeared consumed by an …
Villa are undoubtedly the feel-good story of the season so far and the supporters are drinking it all in. They celebrated like Emery’s men had actually won the league at the full-time whistle and who could blame them? It was no surprise that Emery was far more measured, as he said: “Of course we are performing very well, we are in a row winning matches, we are competing fantastic. We competed first half fantastic and we were struggling. But the second half more or less like this season we are progressively getting better and being humble.” Asked directly if he believes his team are in the title race, Emery added: “No, 38 matches. If it finishes tomorrow then Arsenal is winning the league. There are still another 20 matches to play.” At least his touchline ban spared Maresca from a verbal volley from Cole Palmer, who made dissatisfaction at being substituted with the score level clear to the home bench. Palmer let his anger out at one of Maresca’s coaches before taking his seat in …
