“I have been a fan of hers from afar for a few years and we have followed each other on socials for a while,” Tyla says of Larsson. Then, she recalls, they finally met in person during a night out at The Box in London. Not too long after, Tyla teased a new song she was working on on Instagram: The beginnings of “She Did It Again,” itself a teaser for her upcoming sophomore studio album, A-Pop.
“I heard the song the night she posted the snippet on Instagram and I was like ‘damn, I wish I was on this,” Larsson says. “She hit me up and we went out to dinner and the studio after,” says Tyla, with Larsson adding: “cut to us playing our music for each other in the studio and she asked me to be on it. I was blushing!” As Tyla puts it “the rest was herstory.”
The general goal, sonically and visually, was to keep things sexy, light, and fun. “It’s where I am right now musically, and I feel like collaborating with Zara pushes the song further into pop territory without losing what I wanted it to feel like,” says Tyla, who has been carving out a singular lane for herself from her first big hit “Water” to most recently “Chanel.” Larsson’s vocals have added a layer of honest to goodness pop to Tyla’s gender-bending sound—like the music video itself, it’s an exciting development for both.
“I want people to listen to this to feel free and hot,” says Larsson. That starts with their own looks, which were put together by Ron Hartleben, Tyla’s stylist, and Emma Oleck, who dressed Larsson.
