It is “used virtually every night” and “I turn and flip it monthly and still get a good night’s sleep”.
“The edges are still straight and support me sitting on the side of the bed,” he adds.
Reader Sandy has had the same Tempur mattress for around 23 years, costing just under £2,000. “It never needs flipping or turning. It has an outer cover, which you zip off and wash and apart from that, it’s maintenance free.”
Following back treatment in 2013, which left her with increased nerve pain and sensitivity in her lower spine, it has been the only bed she could sleep on. Therefore when going on holiday, she uses a 5cm memory foam mattress topper: “It travels everywhere with me and it’s brilliant for sleeping on the plane too.”
“Memory foam is an amazing and hard wearing product. I applaud Tempur. The original mattress is still in my view the best,” she says.
Extend your mattress life
The secret to extending the life of a mattress lies in a mix of maintenance and protection, according to these readers.
Alan Lucas, 71, from Surrey, has had his Vispring mattress for 18 years and puts its longevity down to turning it “end to end regularly with an occasional flip over at the start of its life” and putting “a mattress cover on the frame underneath so it doesn’t rub on the slat”.
The quality of the mattress is also a factor for Alan and despite opting for the lower price range of the brand at around £600, “it still feels comfortable,” he says.
“I think Vispring expects its mattresses to last longer than the average. Our mattress was a Vispring exclusive to John Lewis, as I recall it was traditionally made with what would now be considered old-fashioned materials, including animal hair,” he adds.
Reader Heather Erridge also swears by Vispring, who agrees that the key to having one is turning the mattress regularly. “It re-settles the mattress and stops the materials from settling into one place,” she says, ensuring “a great night’s sleep every night”.
