I spent a gloriously sunny weekend at Chesil Beach recently, an 18-mile (29km) stretch of coastline in Dorset, England.
I was surprised by just how physically demanding it was to walk across its famous pebbles. Every step felt like a turn on the Stairmaster, and I could really feel the effort in my calves, thighs and glutes when I got home.
Unlike a smooth sidewalk or treadmill, an uneven surface shifts beneath your feet, forcing the muscles around your ankles, knees and hips to work harder to keep you stable. It also challenges your balance, coordination and core as your body continuously adjusts to changes underfoot.

It got me thinking—could I recreate some of those demands at home?
While I can’t import a ton of pebbles and dump them in my yard, I can create a clever workout that strengthens the movement patterns and muscles that keep me steady of my feet.
The workout below does exactly that by combining lower-body strength exercises with balance and coordination drills.
The moves
- Reverse lunge and knee drive
- Lateral step skater
- Single leg deadlift
- Squat to calf raise
- Fast feet
How to do the moves
Perform each move for 30 seconds, followed by 15-20 seconds of rest. Then move onto the next exercise, doing all five to complete the circuit. Aim for three circuits in total.
You can add a dumbbell to the single leg deadlift, or do this move with your own body weight.
1. Reverse lunge and knee drive
Sets: 3 Time: 30sec per leg Rest: 15-20 sec
- Stand with feet hip-width apart.
- Step your right foot back.
- Bend both knees to lower into a reverse lunge.
- Push through your left foot to stand, bringing your right knee forward and up toward your chest.
- Pause briefly while balancing on your standing leg, then step straight back into the next lunge.
- Repeat for 30 seconds, then swap sides.
2. Lateral skater steps
Sets: 3 Time: 30sec Rest: 15-20 sec
- Stand with your feet wider than shoulder-width apart, keeping a slight bend in your knees.
- Lean forward, hinging at your hips, while keeping your back straight.
- Bend your right knee and shift your weight over your right foot, lowering your hips and keeping your left leg extended out to the side.
- Push through your right foot to rise and hop onto your left foot, bending your left knee and extending your right leg out.
- As you move from side to side, swing your arms diagonally across your body like a speed skater.
- Continue alternating sides.
If you need to make this low impact, step instead of jumping from side to side.
3. Single leg deadlift
Sets: 3 Time: 30sec each side Rest: 15-20 sec
- Start with a dumbbell in your right hand (or no weight if you prefer) and legs close together.
- Shift your weight onto your right leg, keeping a slight bend in your knee.
- Hinge forward from the hips and lift your extended left leg behind you.
- Keep your back flat and lower your hand (or the dumbbell if you are holding one) to around shin-level or when you feel tension in the back of your standing leg.
- Squeeze your glutes and push through your right leg to return to standing.
- Repeat for 30 seconds, then swap sides.
- Have a chair or wall nearby if you need support.
4. Squat to calf raise
Sets: 3 Time: 30sec Rest: 15-20 sec
- Stand with your feet about shoulder-width apart and your toes pointing out slightly.
- Push your hips back and bend your knees to lower into a squat, keeping your chest lifted.
- Push through your feet to stand, then lift both heels and rise onto the balls of your feet.
- Pause, then lower into a squat.
- Repeat for 30 seconds.
5. Fast feet
Sets: 3 Time: 30sec Rest: 15-20 sec
- Stand with your feet together.
- Keeping your weight on the balls of your feet, quickly step your right foot out to the side, followed by your left, so your feet are wider than hip-width apart.
- Step both feet back one at a time.
- Repeat this in-out pattern for 30 seconds, moving at speed.
