Shakira set to perform a free concert for millions of fans on Copacabana Beach

A colossal crowd of approximately two million people is expected to descend upon Rio de Janeiro’s iconic Copacabana Beach this Saturday night for a free concert by Colombian superstar Shakira.

The event marks a significant moment for the pop icon, who anticipates it will be the largest performance of her career.

This monumental show follows similar free concerts by Madonna in 2024 and Lady Gaga last year, both of which drew immense crowds to the sprawling sands. Shakira’s performance is part of her “Las Mujeres Ya No Lloran” (“Women No Longer Cry”) world tour, named after her 2024 album.

Speaking with Brazil’s TV Globo, the Latina pop star expressed her long-held ambition for such an event. “For me it’s a dream. I always dreamed of singing on this beach, because I think it’s a magical place,” she stated in Portuguese, noting her proficiency in the language predates her English.

Her deep connection with Brazil dates back to the 1990s, when she first found success there.

Ethnomusicologist Felipe Maia, pursuing a doctoral degree at Paris Nanterre University, attributes this to her charisma and cultural similarities between Colombia and Brazil, suggesting Saturday’s show “crowns the relationship she has had with Brazil for a very long time.”

By Saturday morning, eager fans had already begun to gather on the beach, securing prime spots for the evening’s spectacle. Street vendors were bustling, offering not only food and drinks but also practical items like toilet paper, deodorant, and even bags of sand to elevate views of the stage, which was set up opposite the Copacabana Palace.

DJs are scheduled to warm up the crowd in the late afternoon, with Shakira’s two-hour set slated for 9::45 p.m. local time. An additional DJ will perform after her set, a measure introduced by Rio officials to entertain attendees and facilitate an orderly departure.

Rio’s City Hall is spearheading these free concerts as a strategic initiative to invigorate economic activity following the Carnival and New Year’s Eve festivities, and ahead of the month-long Saint John’s Day celebrations in June.

Rio Mayor Eduardo Cavaliere emphasized the city’s commitment, stating on Wednesday, “For us, parties are serious business. Because parties generate jobs, income, development, and identity for the city.” He projected a remarkable 40-fold financial return on the city’s investment in the show.

A study by Rio’s City Hall and Riotur, the municipal tourism company, estimates Shakira’s performance could inject approximately 777 million reais (around $155 million) into the local economy.

This influx is anticipated from tourists spending on accommodation, dining, and shopping. City Hall data reveals a significant surge in May tourism during concert years: a 34.2% increase on May 1, 2024, compared to the previous year, and a 90.5% rise in 2025 over 2023.

Airbnb also reported an uptick in bookings from across Brazil, Latin America, and European capitals like Paris and London in anticipation of the event.
