Picture a locked room, a countdown clock, and a group of strangers who must combine clues, argue over theories, and assign tasks fast enough to escape before time runs out. It is a strange setting for psychological research. It is also, as it turns out, an excellent one.
A study published in the Journal of Economic Psychology used data from over 15,000 live escape-room games at a single London venue, played between 2018 and 2022, to ask a simple question: Does air pollution make teams worse at working together? The surprising answer is yes, and the effect is not small.
We already knew pollution could dull individual minds. In one striking study, researchers tracked professional chess players across tournaments and found that a rise in indoor fine particulate matter increased a player’s odds of making a costly error, with the effect growing worse as the clock ran down. These were elite players, trained for years to think clearly under pressure, and even they were not immune. Related research has found similar penalties for pollution in call centers, courtrooms, and fruit-packing lines. For example, Sarmiento (2022) analyzed thousands of court hearings across Mexican courthouses and found that a 10-unit increase in particulate matter made hearings run 6.7% longer. Extrapolated across the sample, the pollution effect cost roughly 56 additional working days over the three years studied, time lost not to laziness or incompetence, but to dirtier air on the day of the hearing.
Air Pollution and Team Performance
What had not been tested, until now, is what happens to a group. On high-pollution days, escape-room teams took up to 5% longer, roughly three minutes, to complete a sequence of non-routine, collaborative tasks. The effect was strongest in the larger teams of five or six. The authors then re-ran the analysis for the teams that came for corporate team-building sessions rather than birthday parties, the groups that most resemble how adults actually work together (over 3,000 teams). The effect not only held up, it was actually slightly larger.
The effect also split in an unexpected way across pollutants. Carbon monoxide and sulfur dioxide harmed team performance at concentrations already well below the World Health Organization’s air quality guidelines. This is worrying: It means that air that counts as officially safe was still problematic enough to slow teams down. On the other hand, nitrogen dioxide and fine particulate matter only hurt performance once concentrations rose substantially above WHO guideline levels. Those levels are rare in London, but might be common in polluted cities elsewhere.
This is not simply the chess-player story scaled up. Most research on air quality and cognition looks at one person solving one problem. The newer study looked at people coordinating with each other, thinking together, under time pressure. That distinction is the most interesting part of the finding. The researchers also looked at teams made up of people under 16, mostly there for birthday parties, and found no significant pollution effect on their performance, perhaps because the relevant “thinking together” skills are not yet really developed at that age. Younger, informal groups are the least representative of a modern workplace, where success depends on structured collaboration between adults under institutional pressure. The fact that pollution hurt the corporate-style teams but not the youth groups points to something beyond individual fog. It suggests dirty air degrades the coordination itself: the communication, delegation, and shared reasoning that make a team more capable than any one of its members.
Why Does Pollution Dull Teams?
One possible reason for the results is purely physiological. Carbon monoxide reduces oxygen flow to the brain (and might actually kill you because of that, at high concentrations). This blunts reasoning abilities and the kind of creative problem-solving abilities that escape rooms require. No mystery there.
There is, however, another possible channel, which is more psychological and far less clear at the moment. Some research suggests that pollution worsens mood, and a worse mood can make people less cooperative and even more risk-averse. Both of those could slow down a team trying to solve a puzzle together.
Pollution, Economics, and You
That is a bigger deal than it sounds. Escape rooms stand in for many modern-work tasks, from product design to scientific discovery, which are analytical, collaborative, and creative. If pollution taxes the skill set that innovation runs on, air quality becomes an economic variable, not just a health one. Many low- and middle-income countries face far higher pollution levels than London ever reaches, and many are trying to build the exact kind of service-sector, team-based innovation economy that pollution might be undermining. Reducing air pollution, then, might be more than a public health measure. It may be a growth strategy.
A word of caution, though. As always with scientific research, one study, however well designed, is a data point, not a verdict. This study, though, joins a growing body of research linking environmental conditions to cognitive and behavioural outcomes, including work on heat and decision-making previously covered in this space (heat hinders our thinking, can make us violent, and leads to traffic accidents). The pattern is becoming familiar: Our thinking, and our ability to work with others, depends more on our environment than we like to believe.
There is a practical takeaway worth taking seriously if you work in a team, or if you manage one. Air quality is not just a comfort issue for the office. If you have any control over indoor air, in a meeting room, a workshop venue, or a shared lab space, treat ventilation and filtration as tools for better collaboration, not just as amenities. You cannot escape a bad room by thinking harder. Sometimes you just need better air.
