Duchess Sophie schools us on styling white skinny jeans for spring in your 60s

The Duchess of Edinburgh, 61, handled the unpredictable British weather with ease on Sunday, as she visited the Royal Windsor Flower Show.

Embracing spring, the royal, who co-designed the Plants with Purpose Garden, wore summery white skinny jeans, which act as a clean canvas for summer’s brighter wardrobe.

While they can be more difficult to style than traditional blue denim, Sophie looked effortlessly elegant in her neutrals, teaming the jeans with a pale shirt layered under a Max Mara beige striped blazer, and finishing her look with matching espadrille heels.

Proving layering is king, Sophie chose the ‘Sartoriale’ blazer, made from an alpaca-wool blend fabric to ensure she remained warm for the outside engagement.

The meaning of white

Historically, the colour white is associated with purity, but Colour Psychologist Tash Bradley also noted that when it comes to modern-day clothing, it can also be synonymous with confidence.

“White means clarity of thought. To wear white, you’ve got to have a lot of confidence, you know. You’re not hiding anything – you want to show purity. If someone wears white, they’re not minimalist, but it’s very clean. It’s very pure, it’s very soft,” she previously told HELLO!.

Royal wardrobe staple

More often than not, you’ll catch the royal style set modelling an array of tailored suits or custom coat dresses, so it’s rare to catch them in more casual attire.

Other royals have embraced the summery denim, including Zara Tindall

White jeans have, however, slipped quietly into the wardrobes of Princess Kate, Zara Tindall and more. Most recently, the Princess of Wales sported straight-leg pale denim for her 15th wedding anniversary photo with her husband Prince William and three kids Prince George, 12, Princess Charlotte, 11, and Prince Louis, eight.

During a recent holiday to Cornwall, the family of five embraced nature as she lay in the grass barefoot, wearing an unexpected pair of white jeans and a striped short-sleeve light knit. This was not a new look for the royal; before she wed Prince William, Kate showed off her daytime wardrobe at a charity polo match at the Beaufort Polo Club in 2006.

Meanwhile, Princess Anne styled a pair of flared white jeans with a blue blazer layered underneath an oversized waterproof jacket and two scarves during a visit to Northern Ireland in 2024. The look appeared to have been inspired by her daughter Zara, who similarly wore cropped denim with a crisp white T-shirt and navy blazer.
