The charity of a street preacher backed by Nigel Farage has been reported to the regulator by the National Secular Society for promoting anti-Muslim bigotry, misogyny and homophobia.
Stephen Clayden (pictured) is a trustee of the charity Bread of Life Community Church. It is registered under the charitable purpose ‘the advancement of religion’ and other charitable purposes. Charities are legally required to act for the public benefit.
In March, the Church was issued with a Community Protection Notice (CPN) after its street preachers allegedly told passersby they were going to hell. The CPN was issued by Safer Colchester Partnership, which is run by Colchester Council, and requires the Church to “stop intimidating behaviour” and to not use loudspeakers.
Earlier this month, leader of Reform UK Nigel Farage MP told Clayden he was “fully on your side”. The Church’s appeal against the CPN is due to be heard in October.
As a registered charity, Bread of Life Community Church is exempt from most forms of tax. It is also recognised by HMRC for gift aid.
Muslim families “have over 10 children” to “eradicate the native population”
In a sermon uploaded to charity’s YouTube channel in January titled ‘Preparing For The Final World Government – The Wicked Man and the Wicked Woman: Socialism and Islam’, Clayden says “the Muslims do not intend to take over by simply blowing people up or flying planes into buildings. That is not the only way they intend to take over.
“They intend to take over the same way that socialism does. Small increments, the tortoise, so that you and I do not even notice it. Outbreeding the white population, outbreeding all of us, and having more and more children.
“Most Muslim families have over 10 children now. They’re told to do that. They are told to do that in order to eradicate the native population.”
He continues, “And the biggest mistake, the biggest mistake the UK has ever made, and the US has ever made, is allowing Muslims into positions of political power.
“That is the biggest mistake we have ever made as a country, and it is a mistake which will come back to bite us eventually.”
He asks: “do we love Muslims? Yes, we do. Do we hate Islam? Yes, we do. Because God hates it. He hates the religion that is separating them from him.”
King Charles may be “Antichrist” for praising Islam and theory of evolution is “lies”
In another video titled ‘#God Hates Mixing Faiths! King Charles’ #Controversial Message #EXPOSED!’ –– Clayden claims Charles is “praising Islam instead of praising Jesus” and therefore is “a big candidate” for the position of “Antichrist”.
Another video featuring Clayden claims the theory of evolution is “lies”. The charity is also registered under the charitable purpose ‘the advancement of education’.
“Perfect harmony” of wife “submitting to the husband”
In a May 2026 YouTube sermon titled ‘Walking as a Saint: Ephesians 5. How Biblical is Your Marriage?’, Clayden says wives should be “subject to their husbands in everything”.
He continues, “And I can’t think of anything more displeasing when you see men submitting to their wives, rather than wives submitting to their husbands.”
He says there should have been “a perfect harmony where the husband being the head and the wife of course submitting to the husband” but blames “sin” for this no longer being the case.
He says “if you have a woman who does not submit to her husband, a man does not want to love a woman like that”. A woman’s love for a man is a “submissive love”, he claims.
He claims the “feminist movement” is the “work of the devil”.
Gay pride is like “Islamic jihad”
In a June 2025 YouTube video titled ‘They Parade Their Sin Like Sodom – Isaiah 3. The Righteousness Oppressed’, Clayden says these “perverted pride parades” remind him of “Islamic jihad – they want to take over, these rainbows that we see in our streets.”
Speaking about gay pride month, he says “They won’t be satisfied until the entire calendar belongs to them. This is takeover.”
He continues, “If you’re a man, then God does not want you to be like a woman. He does not want to see men parading around in high heels and miniskirts and lipstick. And I don’t want to see that either”.
He says, “I have one question to this community. What part of that verse do you not understand? You shall not lie with a male as with a woman. It is an abomination.”
He notes “most sins didn’t carry the death penalty. The worst sins, the most wicked of sins, carried the death penalty. And this sin, the sin of homosexuality, carried the death penalty. It was so wicked, it was worthy of death in God’s eyes.”
He claims “a lot of these people are convinced that they were born that way.
“When someone is convinced they were born that way, there’s nothing really you can do to convince them otherwise, apart from pray of course, but it says that they’re handed over to this.
“That means that they’ve gone past the point in no return.”
Numerous other religious charities reported for misogyny and homophobia
In March, the NSS raised concerns about Hatch End Islamic Centre after a preacher claimed it is “mandatory” for a wife to “do the housework” and “serve” her husband. The Commission provided the charity with “advice and guidance”.
Last year, the Government said the cases cited in the NSS’s Mission and Misogyny report, which documents misogyny promoted or condoned by charities registered under the charitable purpose of ‘the advancement of religion’, were “absolutely shocking”.
Cases include An-Noor Masjid and Community Centre, which the NSS reported to the regulator after it hosted a sermon last year that said a man can hit his wife if she refuses to give him intercourse.
In January, the NSS raised concerns about another Christian charity, Wellspring Ministry, after its chair claimed men who dress as women are “revolting” and “repulsive”, but there is “nothing you can do against them”. The sermon noted gay people used to be taken to an “institution” and given an “injection”.
Last year, the NSS reported Christian charities for promoting ideas that homosexuality “will destroy us”, is a “degrading perversion”, and can be ‘healed by Jesus’. All three charities received “advice and guidance”.
NSS: ‘Repugnant homophobia, misogyny and anti-Muslim bigotry’
National Secular Society spokesperson Alejandro Sanchez said: “Taxpayer money should not be subsidising the repugnant homophobia, misogyny and anti-Muslim bigotry espoused by Stephen Clayden and his Church.
“This is just the latest example of a charity registered under ‘the advancement of religion’ promoting religious extremism. It demonstrates why ‘the advancement of religion’ should be removed as a charitable purpose.
“Many religious charities do excellent work and provide a genuine public benefit, and they can continue to do so under alternative charitable purposes. But as this latest case shows, too many charities use ‘the advancement of religion’ as a flak jacket to promote division.”
