Ruth Wilson’s “perfect” British murder mystery with “unpredictable twists” is on TV tonight

See How They Run, the murder mystery starring Ruth Wilson and Saoirse Ronan, is on TV tonight. With an unpredictable narrative full of twists and a stacked British cast, this is one for genre fans!

The 2022 film is inspired by the work of legendary novelist Agatha Christie (who is played in the film by Shirley Henderson). The action follows alcoholic detective George Stoppard (Sam Rockwell) as he teams up with Constable Stalker (Ronan).

Following the death of a theatre director, who is helming a stage adaptation of The Mousetrap, Stoppard and Stalker are faced with an investigation that offers a new suspect at every turn.

Directed by Tom George from a screenplay by Mark Chappell, See How They Run will air tonight at 7.05pm on Film4, and will likely be added to Channel 4’s streaming service afterwards.

Though it’s only a 12a in terms of the rating from the BBFC, the broadcast on Film4 has been edited slightly from its original theatrical cut to make the pre-watershed time. If you want to view the uncut film, it is streaming on Disney+.

In addition to the aforementioned stars, the cast for the film includes Adrien Brody, Reece Shearsmith, Harris Dickinson, Charlie Cooper, David Oyelowo, Sian Clifford, Tim Key and Pippa Bennett-Warner.

Though it only grossed $22 million at the box office, the comedy mystery proved to be a hit with critics, with Rotten Tomatoes currently reporting an impressive approval rating of 75% from 200 reviews.

In Digital Spy‘s five-star review of the film, we called it a “perfect genre film” with “unpredictable twists and turns”, adding: “[It’s an] unexpectedly heartfelt and meta-movie about what it means to tell a story.”

“It knows what you’re expecting and it delivers, but also subverts by playing into an audience’s intelligence as well as its pathos. Most importantly, though, See How They Run is funny as hell.”

“See How They Run feels like it was designed in a lab to please fans of this genre, with Mark Chappell’s script keenly identifying the most beloved tropes of classic murder mysteries while playing with them just enough for freshness,” opined Consequence.

See How They Run airs at 7.05pm on Film4.
