If you’re a die-hard rom-com fan like me, you might also believe that the genre hasn’t seen a truly great entry since 2023’s Anyone But You, starring Glen Powell and Sydney Sweeney.
The hit comedy, based on Much Ado About Nothing by William Shakespeare, helped revive the rom-com genre following a slight slump in the 2010s.
Luckily, writer and director Will Gluck, who also made the hit rom-com Easy A, has another project in the works – and it sounds seriously good.
Callum Turner and Monica Barbaro star in the upcoming film, One Night Only, which arrives in theatres in August. The story follows two strangers searching for love on the one night of the year single people can legally have sex.

What is One Night Only about?
Billed as “fresh, witty and swoony,” the film is set in a fictionalised version of New York City, where single people are legally allowed to have sex on one night of the year.
Oscar nominee Monica Barbaro (A Complete Unknown, Top Gun: Maverick) and BAFTA nominee Callum Turner (Masters of the Air, Fantastic Beasts franchise) star as Allie and Owen, two “love-starved strangers” who cross paths on the fateful night.
The synopsis reads: “Recently dumped Owen and hopeful romantic Allie might be the only two singles in the city looking for more than just a quick encounter. They both feel a spark when they meet, but a series of missteps and side quests complicate their night, keeping them apart.
“As they each race toward and away from each other across the city, they just might discover that the one thing they want most is closer than they think.”
Who else stars in One Night Only?
Monica and Callum lead an impressive cast of stars.
Cast members include Maya Hawke (Stranger Things), Julia Fox (Uncut Gems), indie pop sensation King Princess (Nine Perfect Strangers), Ben Marshall (Saturday Night Live), Ziwe (Baited with Ziwe), and screen legends Molly Ringwald and Levar Burton.
How to watch One Night Only
Mark your calendars because the film arrives in cinemas in the UK and Ireland on 28 August. Audiences in the United States will be able to watch the film from 7 August.
