Attenborough worked with documentary producer Alastair Fothergill on a number of nature documentaries, including 2001’s The Blue Planet, 2006’s Planet Earth and more recently, David Attenborough: A Life on Our Planet. Speaking about Sir David ahead of him turning 100, Fothergill told BBC Breakfast that the presenter “hates celebrity” – and would prefer to spend his birthday at home. “He hates celebrity. He doesn’t like that at all and he’s realised that the has to do it, he’s realised how famous he is but if we could escape everything else about publicity, he would be very pleased,” he said on Thursday (7 May). Sir David Attenborough’s 100th birthday present is… a parasitic wasp

Get the Popular Science daily newsletter💡 Breakthroughs, discoveries, and DIY tips sent six days a week. Famed British naturalist and broadcaster Sir David Attenborough turns 100 years old on May 8, and a team of researchers has prepared a special present: an entire new genus of wasp named in his honor.  Meet Attenboroughnculus tau, a tiny parasitic wasp discovered in Chile. The specimen is 0.14 inches long and has a T-shaped marking on its abdomen that inspired the species name, “tau.” The insect was collected from Chile’s Valdivia Province in 1983, and it took over four decades for someone to officially recognize it as something new.   Attenboroughnculus tau is one of the over 50 species named in honor of the famed naturalist. A profile of artist Betye Saar on the occasion of her 100th birthday and costume design show at Roberts Projects

Betye Saar wears a Gucci kaftan, the artist’s own archival “Mojo necklace” from 1974 and Patricia Von Muslin jewelry. This story is part of Image’s May Momentum issue, which looks at art as a sport and sport as an art. Betye Saar practically levitates into the room wearing a Max Mara jacket that resembles a bird’s plumage, with a butter-yellow silk Dior dress grazing the ground behind her and a cane in her hand. This is look No. 1 at the photo shoot for this story, and everyone in the room — producers, photo assistants, editors — stop to stare, little gasps mutating into big ones. Saar’s magnetism either comes from being one of the most important living artists of the last century, the fact that her 100th birthday is approaching or being a Leo. In any case, every so often, she lets out a laugh that is so mischievous and exalting, or makes a joke that is completely disarming in its self-deprecation, and we all feel like we’ve won. You’re left anticipating the next …

The bull, named Sir Attenbullock to celebrate his birthday on May 8, will be mentioned in a letter sent to Sir David by Peta founder Ingrid Newkirk. The letter will tell him the animal was among the first rescued through Peta India’s Delhi mechanisation project. This initiative aims to replace animal-drawn carts with electric vehicles so the overworked animals can retire. In her letter, Ms Newkirk writes that Sir Attenbullock is “strong, yet gentle”, which she says he shares with Sir David, and adds that he also “quietly inspires others to appreciate the richness of the natural world”. She added: “He has a presence that draws people into his world, including visiting children. He …

The veteran BBC nature presenter will guide viewers through the intricate history of humanity and the Earth, culminating in a vision for London’s future. Reflecting on the full production, Sir David stated: “In this immersive experience, we explore two stories – the four-billion-year epic of the Earth, and our own, relatively brief chapter, the story of humankind. These two stories are not, at this moment, aligned – but they could be. My hope is that anyone visiting the Our Story experience will come to …

We celebrate Sir David Attenborough’s 100th birthday in this week’s issue

We celebrate Sir David Attenborough’s 100th birthday in this week’s issue

This week’s issue has been a long time in the planning, and with good reason. Reaching the age of 100 is an extraordinary achievement, but to reach that milestone as the person who has documented the profound changes in our natural world makes it something truly special. For decades Sir David Attenborough has brought the wonders of the natural world into our homes, shaping how we understand the planet. Generations of viewers have grown up with his voice as a guide charting the beauty of the world and, increasingly, its fragility. This issue is a reflection on an extraordinary career and on a legacy that continues to evolve. And hopefully there is more to come. His message has never mattered more. Spending time with Sir David, even briefly, only deepens that admiration. Some years ago, I was fortunate enough to work with him on a cover shoot for RT in the butterfly house at Syon House in west London. As we waited for the perfect shot, the photographer suggested it would be wonderful if the …

Winnie-the-Pooh’s 100th birthday is a great excuse to explore the Sussex forest that inspired the books | Sussex holidays

Deep in a medieval hunting forest, amid 6,500 acres of heathland, a wooden bridge spans a tributary of the River Medway. Every single day, no matter the weather, people flock to stand on its slats and cheer on sticks as they float downstream. The Guardian’s journalism is independent. I know this because on a frosty but sunny morning, (“a very long time ago now, about last Friday”, as children’s author AA Milne might have said), I stood with two such adults jumping up and down with delight as my little piece of oak stormed ahead and won the race. The game is Pooh Sticks, originally described by Milne in Winnie-the-Pooh, which was published in 1926. It was inspired by the game he and his son, Christopher (Robin), would play on Posingford Bridge in Ashdown Forest (AKA the Hundred Acre Wood) in East Sussex. Just 30 miles south of London, this sprawling open heathland lies within the High Weald Area of Outstanding …

Prince Harry honours the Queen in private as royal family marks her 100th birthday without him

While senior members of the royal family gathered in London to mark what would have been Queen Elizabeth II’s 100th birthday, Prince Harry chose a more private, deeply personal tribute thousands of miles away in Montecito, California. The Duke of Sussex did not join the public commemorations in the UK, but his presence was quietly felt. According to reports, Harry arranged for flowers to be placed at St George’s Chapel in Windsor, where his beloved grandmother was laid to rest in September 2022. It is a place of profound significance for the royal family. The late monarch rests in the King George VI Memorial Chapel alongside her parents, King George VI and Queen Elizabeth, the Queen Mother, her husband Prince Philip, and her sister Princess Margaret. For Harry, it has become a focal point of remembrance, one he has returned to, both in person and in spirit, time and again. © Royal FamilyThe royals commemorated the Queen’s 100th birthday, but Prince Harry did not attend This is not the first time he has honoured her in …
