ABC swipes at FCC over ‘First Amendment threat’ brought on by early broadcast license renewal

The request for ABC to renew its licenses came soon after the FCC received a complaint against late night host Jimmy Kimmel following his joke suggesting that First Lady Melania Trump had the glow of an “expectant widow.” Days after the sketch aired, a gunman attempted to storm the White House Correspondents’ Dinner. However, along with the filing, the Walt Disney Company-owned network also stated that it believes their being asked to renew the licenses early is a clear “threat to the First Amendment.” As Deadline reported, the filing read: “It is an extraordinary demonstration of power and coercion directed at disfavored editorial voices which sends a clear warning to every broadcaster in America.” The statement continues: “This is a threat to the …

The Spanish actor, 57, is among the most vocal celebrity activists for Gaza amid the war with Israel. At the 2026 Oscars in March, Bardem wore an anti-war patch and a pro-Palestine pin on his suit. “No to war and free Palestine,” he declared before presenting the award for Best International Feature Film, alongside Priyanka Chopra. Speaking to Variety in a new interview, the Oscar-winning No Country for Old Men star said that, like Susan Sarandon — who in February said it’s been “impossible” for her to even find television roles after her participation in a pro-Palestine rally in 2023 — he, too, has lost out on jobs because of his stance. “Yes, I’ve heard things: ‘They were going to call you about that project, but …

Get the latest entertainment news, reviews and star-studded interviews with our Independent Culture email Get the latest entertainment news with our free Culture newsletter Get the latest entertainment news with our free Culture newsletter Oscar-winning director Pavel Talankin has revealed his Academy Award went missing after he was forced to check it in for a flight. Talankin, a Russian teacher and documentary-maker, took home the statuette after his film Mr Nobody Against Putin won the Best Feature Documentary accolade at this year’s ceremony. But the award went missing after he was forced to put it in the hold compartment on a flight. Thankfully, airline Lufthansa has since confirmed the Academy Award has been found, saying they are arranging for its return “as quickly as possible”. Talankin told Deadline that he arrived for a flight from New York’s John F. Kennedy airport with his Oscar in hand on Wednesday, but Transportation Security Administration (TSA) officials told him he couldn’t take the prize onboard as it could be used as a weapon. The director, who said he …

AI-generated actors and scripts are now ineligible for Oscars

AI-generated actors and scripts are now ineligible for Oscars

The organization behind the Academy Awards released new Oscar rules on Friday, including several that address the use of generative artificial intelligence. The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences said that only performances “credited in the film’s legal billing and demonstrably performed by humans with their consent” will be eligible for Academy Awards. Similarly, the academy said that screenplays must be “human-authored” to be eligible. The academy also said it has the right to request more information about a film’s AI usage and “human authorship.” These rule changes come as an independent film is in the works with an AI-generated version of Val Kilmer, as AI “actress” Tilly Norwood keeps making headlines, and as new video models are causing at least a few filmmakers to make sweeping declarations of despair. AI was also one of the main sticking points in the actors’ and writers’ strikes back in 2023. Outside Hollywood, at least one novel has been pulled by its publisher due to the apparent use of AI, and other writers’ groups are declaring that …

The Vanity Fair Oscar Party Looks Especially Stunning Through Jean Pigozzi’s Lens

The Vanity Fair Oscar Party Looks Especially Stunning Through Jean Pigozzi’s Lens

Jean Pigozzi—or Johnny, to his friends—is no stranger to the Vanity Fair Oscar Party. By his count, he’s attended the event at least eight or nine times, not counting the many years he went to the legendary bash as a guest of Graydon Carter when it was just a dinner at Mortons. This year, the man-about-town and central subject of the HBO documentary I Am Curious Johnny was seated next to his old pal Carter at the 2026 Vanity Fair Oscar Party dinner, amongst other compatriots. “The dinner party was fun because I knew nearly everybody. There were 10 of us,” Pigozzi says over the phone. “I was next to Anjelica [Huston], who I’ve known for 100 years. Mick [Jagger] I’ve known for 50 years. Graydon, I’ve known for 30 years. It was really like having dinner with old friends.” For those familiar with Pigozzi, his many connections shouldn’t come as much of a surprise. The October 2008 issue of this very magazine contained a feature called “Five Degrees of Jean Pigozzi,” showing him as …

Selma Blair Wore the Diamond-Studded Watch Found at the Vanity Fair Oscar Party

What happens at the Vanity Fair Oscar party evidently doesn’t always stay there. Following Hollywood’s biggest night and the 31st annual afterparty organized by Vanity Fair, comedian Robby Hoffman discovered an unexpected party favor: “Let it be known that I found a diamond watch on the floor of the Vanity Fair party…” Hoffman took to Instagram Stories with a post showing the Boucheron watch, belonging to the Vendôme Liseré collection, with the strap broken into several pieces. While a price for the item isn’t listed, the brand’s other watches go for up to $36,900. Later, Hoffman posted an important update, tagging fellow Vanity Fair Oscar party attendee Selma Blair, after she was identified as the wearer of the lost accessory. Hoffman, who is married to The Traitors’ Gabby Windey, confirmed that the watch had been handed over to the Los Angeles County Museum of Art (LACMA) security. The Vanity Fair Oscar Party 2026 Was a Family Affair

The Vanity Fair Oscar Party 2026 Was a Family Affair

As the indelible Dom Toretto said in the classic film Furious 7, “I don’t have friends. I got family.” At Sunday night’s Vanity Fair Oscar Party, however, attendees proved that even in this economy, it’s possible to have both. The silver carpet at our ultra-exclusive celebration after the Oscars 2026 was jam-packed with mini family reunions, including groupings of siblings, parents and their kids, and even a stray grandparent in the mix. All three daughters of Meryl Streep and Don Gummer—Mamie Gummer, Grace Gummer, and Louisa Jacobson—were in attendance in dramatically different ensembles, a contrast to their shared genetics. Celebrated director Steven Spielberg posed for press with his 13-year-old granddaughter, Poppy Gavigan, on his arm. Timothée Chalamet didn’t just spend the evening with his high-profile partner, Kylie Jenner, he also brought sister Pauline Chalamet along for the fun. Why ‘Sinners’ resonates with Jews

Why ‘Sinners’ resonates with Jews

(RNS) — When the envelopes were opened at the 98th Academy Awards, one film dominated the evening: “One Battle After Another,” the political epic by Paul Thomas Anderson that took home six Oscars, including Best Picture. But the second most celebrated film of the night was “Sinners,” directed by Ryan Coogler, which won four Academy Awards: Best Actor for Michael B. Jordan, Best Original Screenplay for Coogler, Best Original Score for Ludwig Göransson and Best Cinematography for Autumn Durald Arkapaw, the first woman ever to win in the category. When I watched “Sinners,” it first felt like a Spike Lee drama about the experiences of Black Americans. The movie takes place in the Mississippi Delta in the early 1930s. The protagonists are two gangster brothers, Smoke and Stack, identical twins, played by Michael B. Jordan, who dream of opening a juke joint. Before long, the Spike Lee sensibility gave way to something closer to Jordan Peele — a supernatural horror film in the tradition of “Get Out” and “Us.” But beneath the genre shifts, the movie …
