Indian activist Sonam Wangchuk ended a 26-day hunger strike on Friday over leaked medical school entrance exam papers that protesters say enabled cheating, but demonstrations demanding the education minister’s resignation were set to continue in the biggest youth-led challenge to Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s government. Youth protesters, led by the self-named Cockroach Janta Party (CJP) movement, demand that Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan resign over the leaks that affected some 2 million students in May and are linked to several student suicides. Wangchuk said on X that he broke his fast in the presence of two federal ministers at the urging of scores of members of parliament and following “a long negotiation on various conditions and in view of possible violence in the country”. He did not elaborate on the talks but promised to lay out details in a video soon. Wangchuk, 59, had been fasting since June 28 in solidarity with India’s Cockroach Janta Party (CJP), which was formed by young Indians and is demanding that federal Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan step down over exam paper leaks in May that affected millions of students. The campaign has emerged as a rare public challenge to Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s government and has drawn support across India. Wangchuk had told government doctors on Jul 17 that he did not wish to be moved to a hospital.  On Jul 18, he refused treatment, hospital authorities had said. “With around 30 police personnel stationed on our floor and well over 100 across the hospital, our movement is severely restricted,” Angmo said on Jul 19. Michael Pfleger, a well-known anti-gun activist priest, has been accused of child sexual abuse and removed from ministry while the allegation is investigated, the Archdiocese of Chicago announced on Saturday (July 11). Pfleger “strongly denied” the allegation, which comes after archdiocesan reviews with outside investigators cleared him of four previous accusations of decades-old abuse, which were all found in the last five years to be unsubstantiated. Pfleger, 77, is the longtime pastor of St. Sabina Parish, a predominantly African American parish, and he has been at the helm of several prominent, sometimes controversial, activism campaigns.
