Watch Duty Is Adding Flood Alerts to Its Wildfire App

Watch Duty, the wildfire alert app, is introducing flood alerts to its popular disaster-awareness service. This is the second disaster type to be broadly included, after wildfires; it’s available as a free update. If you have the app, allow it to track your location, and happen to be near a flood zone, Watch Duty will send you a push notification with more information about the flood. The nonprofit started in 2021 with a focus on California’s wildfires. The app has since expanded to the entire US, where it uses a combination of paid employee “reporters” and many more volunteers who monitor emergency responder radio channels and translate that information about disaster zones to app users. Watch Duty became a critical resource during the Palisades and Eaton fires in Los Angeles last year, providing real-time information about the fire’s movements that users came to rely on. In the year since, Watch Duty has capitalized on that increased recognition and brought in thousands of new users and partnerships, including one with Amazon’s Ring cameras that lets people …

Boost the calorie burn of your walks by adding these three trainer-recommended arm exercises

Boost the calorie burn of your walks by adding these three trainer-recommended arm exercises

One of the most effective and often overlooked strategies for weight loss is to simply walk more frequently, or farther. NASM-certified personal trainer Peter Conroy has another idea. The founder of The Difference App suggests adding a variety of arm exercises into your walks to make them more effective. “Adding additional exercises to your walks can add a new dimension that is both challenging and fun,” he explains. Latest Videos From You may like “These exercises can also help you reach weight goals more quickly, if you have them.” Adding dumbbells, wrist, or ankle weights is not necessary, but can make your walk—and these exercises—even more challenging, strengthen your muscles and further boost your calorie burn. Conroy recommends a basic rep count of 10. But as you become stronger, he suggests gradually increasing the number of reps in each set from 10 to 20, or even to 30. He suggests three sets during your walk but feel free to reduce or increase the number of sets, depending on the length of your walk. Start your …

Google’s Big Bet: Adding Native Android App Support to Chrome Could Result in a Robust OS

Google’s Big Bet: Adding Native Android App Support to Chrome Could Result in a Robust OS

Android and ChromeOS are merging into a single operating system, and the result could become one of the most powerful platforms Google has ever produced. Dubbed Aluminum OS, the operating system takes the full Chrome browser experience and integrates it directly into Android, giving it a new home outside of phones and tablets.  Google seems to think now is the time to make a big move into the laptop space, and it could be right. Android has primarily been used on phones and tablets, but combining it with ChromeOS into a single, more powerful platform makes sense. Bringing native Android app support to the full Chrome browser could create a far more robust operating system experience. It would also give Google an opportunity to offer a more seamless and integrated experience across Android phones and laptops through its new Aluminum OS platform. What do we know about Aluminum OS so far? While we’ve heard rumblings of the merged operating system, we haven’t seen too much of it. A now-private issue ticket gave us our first …

Prime Video follows Netflix and Disney by adding a TikTok-like ‘Clips’ feed in its app

Prime Video follows Netflix and Disney by adding a TikTok-like ‘Clips’ feed in its app

Amazon is adding a short-form video feed to the Prime Video app called “Clips,” the company announced on Friday. Rolling out first in the U.S., Clips will include… well, clips of shows on Prime Video that are designed to hook a viewer and get them to give the full show a try. From that clip, users can add a title to their watchlist, share it with a friend, or navigate to rent, buy, or access the title through their subscription. “Clips gives customers a whole new way to browse with short, personalized snippets tailored to their interests,” said Prime Video’s director of Global Application Experiences, Brian Griffin, in a press release. “Whether they have a few minutes to scroll or are looking for something to watch when they have more time, entertainment is just a tap away.” Amazon first tested this short-form feed during the NBA season, showing highlights that users can scroll through as though they’re watching TikToks. It’s not a surprise to see Prime Video make this change — Netflix, Peacock, Tubi, Disney, and …

Rivian is adding 150+ fast chargers at popular LA shopping hubs

Rivian is adding 150+ fast chargers at popular LA shopping hubs

Image: Caruso Rivian is scaling up in Southern California with a big expansion of its Caruso partnership, adding two showrooms and lining up more than 150 fast chargers across some of LA’s busiest retail properties. The move builds on Rivian’s existing presence at The Grove in Los Angeles and The Americana at Brand in Glendale, and signals a broader strategy: put EV charging and brand experiences in high‑traffic, everyday destinations. More fast chargers at familiar stops Rivian says it will install over 150 DC fast chargers across Caruso’s portfolio as part of its Rivian Adventure Network. The chargers will be open to all EVs and powered by renewable energy. The rollout is expected to happen over the next year, spreading across Caruso properties in Southern California. The company has been building out its own DC fast-charging network focused on reliability and ease of use, and is increasingly placing sites where drivers already spend time. Porsche is adding an all-electric Cayenne coupe to its lineup

Porsche is adding an all-electric Cayenne coupe to its lineup

Porsche will start selling an all-electric Cayenne coupe in late summer, the latest signal from the German automaker that it still sees market demand for EVs. The Cayenne coupe EV — which has four doors, unlike a traditional coupe — will join several other all-electric variants of the SUV when it comes to market later this year, including the base Cayenne Electric, Cayenne S Electric, and Cayenne Turbo Electric. Porsche does, after all, love its variants. And it could be its most successful. When Porsche introduced a coupe version of its gas-powered Cayenne in 2019, it took just a year for the sportier version of the crossover SUV to capture 20% of sales within the Cayenne lineup. Five years later, the coupe variant accounts for 40% of Cayenne sales, according to Porsche. In some markets, the coupe accounts for as much as 90%. In other words, the numbers suggest that the all-electric Cayenne coupe is a worthy bet even with its six-figure price tag. The Cayenne Coupe Electric (as it is officially branded) won’t replace …

FIFA to Put More More World Cup Tickets on Sale After Adding New, More Expensive Categories

FIFA to Put More More World Cup Tickets on Sale After Adding New, More Expensive Categories

FIFA is putting more World Cup tickets on sale after angering some fans by adding new, more expensive categories. Soccer’s governing body announced Tuesday it will make more tickets available at 11 a.m. EDT Wednesday for all 104 games in Categories 1, 2 and 3 plus the new “front category” pricing it added this month. The new category sparked online complaints from fans who said they thought the better seats in the categories they had bought tickets for were withheld and they were assigned less favorable locations. FIFA did not respond to an April 9 request for comment about the new ticket categories it added. Also Tuesday, The Athletic reported that tickets sales are lagging for the U.S. opener against Paraguay on June 12 at Inglewood, California. It said a document distributed to local organizers dated April 10 said 40,934 tickets had been purchased for the U.S.-Paraguay game and 50,661 for the Iran-New Zealand contest on April 15. FIFA projects SoFi’s World Cup capacity at about 69,650, noting it may change. FIFA’s December sale priced …

Everything in the Universe changes by adding enough mass

Everything in the Universe changes by adding enough mass

Out there in the vast depths of space, from our Solar System to the farthest reaches of the Universe, all sorts of objects can be found. There are enormous numbers of small bodies, from tiny moonlets to asteroids to comets and more, that simply aren’t massive enough to pull themselves into hydrostatic equilibrium. Beyond that, there are round planetary bodies — numerous moons, dwarf planets, and even rocky worlds themselves — that have enough mass to get that job done. At still higher masses, we find gas giant planets, brown dwarfs, and stars of all different colors, temperatures, and that will persist in shining for a wide variety of durations. Once a star dies, there are a number of possible fates that can ensue as well, as a stellar corpse can remain as a white dwarf, a neutron star, or a black hole. And yet, throughout the entirety of this cosmic story, there’s just one parameter that overwhelmingly determines what type of object we’ll wind up with, as well as what properties it will possess: …

I never thought warming up was necessary, but adding this eight-minute routine to the start of every run has made me a more consistent runner

I never thought warming up was necessary, but adding this eight-minute routine to the start of every run has made me a more consistent runner

For a long time, I didn’t think that warming up before a run was really necessary. I would just lace up my shoes and head out the door, starting with a slow jog, then eventually speeding up. Sometimes, skipping a warm-up didn’t really seem to matter, but other times, I would feel stiff and heavy anytime I tried to pick up the pace. It made runs less enjoyable, which could put me off my next run. This affected the consistency of my running. Fortunately, I wised up and started treating my warm-up as a non-negotiable before every run. Article continues below You may like I still don’t like spending a long time on my warm-up because I’m almost always in a time crunch, so I have created a routine that takes less than eight minutes. Even though it’s short, it warms up everything I need to get going and always makes me feel ready to quicken the pace when the time comes. Unlike a static stretching routine, which is better done as a post-run routine, …
