California county scam ad lawsuit adds to mounting Meta legal woes | Social Media News

A county in the US state of California has become the latest litigant against Meta Platforms, the sprawling multinational corporation that operates Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp, Messenger and Threads. The lawsuit filed earlier this week by Santa Clara County alleges that Meta knowingly profits from scam advertising, which it says generated $7bn in annual revenue. Recommended Stories list of 3 itemsend of list It is the latest US lawsuit to challenge the social media company’s ethics, following a landmark ruling in March that found the company harmed young users with intentionally addictive design features. Meta, which made more than $200bn in revenue in 2025, has also faced a separate lawsuit filed by the Consumer Federation of America, which said its approach towards scammers violates consumer protection laws. What does the lawsuit allege? The lawsuit alleges that Meta both “facilitates and monetises” deception in how it moderates its advertisements, according to Santa Clara County. Far from scam advertisements being blocked, likely offenders are simply flagged by Meta’s system. Meta only banned marketers it was 95 percent certain …

Jane Street Slashes Bitcoin ETF Holdings, Adds Ether Funds In Q1 2026

Jane Street Slashes Bitcoin ETF Holdings, Adds Ether Funds In Q1 2026

Authored by Helen Partz via CoinTelegraph.com, Wall Street market maker Jane Street reduced its exposure to Bitcoin exchange-traded funds (ETFs) in the first quarter of 2026 while increasing positions in Ether funds. Jane Street cut major Bitcoin ETF holdings in Q1 2026, including BlackRock’s iShares Bitcoin Trust (IBIT) and Fidelity Wise Origin Bitcoin Fund (FBTC), according to a 13F filing published Tuesday. IBIT holdings fell about 71% from Q4 2025 to roughly 5.9 million shares valued at about $225 million, while FBTC dropped about 60% to around 2 million shares worth roughly $115 million. At the same time, Jane Street increased its exposure to Ether (ETH) ETFs, nearly doubling its position in BlackRock’s iShares Ethereum Trust (ETHA) and sharply raising its stake in Fidelity Ethereum Fund (FETH), adding about $82 million combined across the two products over the quarter. The move comes amid early signs of institutional Ether ETF buying in early 2026, including increased exposure reported at Wells Fargo. The filing points to a reshuffling of Jane Street’s reportable crypto-linked holdings at quarter-end, though 13F disclosures do not show …

WhatsApp Adds Meta AI Chats That Are Built to Be Fully Private

WhatsApp Adds Meta AI Chats That Are Built to Be Fully Private

WhatsApp said on Wednesday it is launching an AI chat function known as Incognito Chat that is built to allow users to converse privately with Meta AI—such that Meta itself cannot access the questions or answers. The feature is based on WhatsApp’s Private Processing scheme, which debuted a year ago and already underlies WhatsApp’s existing AI features, including message summarization and composition tools. The idea of Incognito Chat is to create a way for WhatsApp to offer AI chat integration that does not conflict with the communication platform’s commitment to end-to-end encryption, the privacy scheme in which only direct participants in a conversation can read messages or hear a call. Most generative AI platforms now offer some type of “incognito mode,” but these features are usually designed to separate users from the questions they ask and the answers they receive rather than including a mechanism to entirely shield those questions and answers from the provider’s view. With Incognito Chat, WhatsApp will only be able to see that an account used the feature, according to Meta. …

xAI Adds 19 New Gas Turbines Despite Ongoing Lawsuit

xAI Adds 19 New Gas Turbines Despite Ongoing Lawsuit

xAI has added 19 natural gas turbines to its second data center campus in Southhaven, Mississippi, over the past two months, according to internal emails seen by WIRED. The additions come as xAI is fighting a lawsuit from the NAACP and several environmental groups, alleging that the company is violating the Clean Air Act by operating more than two dozen natural gas turbines at the site without appropriate air permits. Emails between an official in the Mississippi Department of Environmental Quality and a representative from Trinity Consultants, obtained via a public records request by the Southern Environmental Law Center and shared with WIRED, show that xAI installed 19 portable gas turbines on its site in Southaven between late March and early May. That brings the total to 46 turbines operating at the site. A spreadsheet included in the email to MDEQ has a column labeled “Total Power Output” that appears to list the megawatt capacity of each turbine on the site. xAI appears to have added more than 500 megawatts of natural gas turbines since …

ESS adds 8.5 GWh of sodium-ion to its battery storage portfolio

ESS adds 8.5 GWh of sodium-ion to its battery storage portfolio

Image: ESS ESS is moving beyond its long-duration energy storage roots into the crowded short- and medium-duration battery storage market – but not with lithium. The Oregon-based company said it signed a letter of intent with Malden, Massachusetts-based Alsym Energy to add 8.5 gigawatt-hours (GWh) of sodium-ion battery cells and modules to its portfolio. The move pushes ESS into short- and medium-duration battery storage – a segment where lithium-ion has long been the default – while building out a broader portfolio alongside its existing iron flow systems. Why sodium-ion Sodium-ion batteries are getting attention as a safer alternative to lithium-based chemistries. ESS says the technology it’s bringing in from Alsym is non-flammable and avoids the thermal runaway risks that have been a concern with lithium-ion systems. The companies say the batteries don’t need complex HVAC systems or extensive fire suppression, which lowers overall project costs. Sodium-ion systems are designed for applications that require fast response, high power, and frequent cycling, such as …
