Texas Reps. Menefee, Green advance to runoff as first midterm primaries show incumbents on shaky ground

Christian Menefee and Al Green. Al Drago | Sergio Flores | Reuters The first round of primary elections is showing how this year’s midterms will be taking place on shifting political ground for incumbents. That was particularly true in Texas — the first state to redraw its congressional districts last year — where incumbent members of Congress have been pushed to runoffs and another has been scuttled from the House altogether. Former Rep. Colin Allred, who abandoned his initial U.S. Senate run to pursue Texas’ 33rd Congressional District, is headed to a runoff with Rep. Julie Johnson, who holds the U.S. House seat that used to be his. Democratic Rep. Al Green, an outspoken liberal who has twice been ejected from President Donald Trump’s State of the Union addresses for protesting, and newly elected Rep. Christian Menefee will compete in the May 26 runoff for a Houston-area district. Rep. Dan Crenshaw, a Republican and former Navy SEAL with an independent streak, faced attacks from the party’s hard right that he was not in lockstep with …

Poland says it had advance knowledge of US-Israel strikes on Iran – POLITICO

Germany also said it had been informed in advance. Not so much Paris, however. French President Emmanuel Macron said the U.S. and Israel didn’t “inform or involve” France in the strikes. While several European governments emphasized restraint and de-escalation on Saturday, Sikorski adopted a sharply critical tone toward Tehran. Iran, he said, is “a country that for decades supported terrorism [and] organized terrorist attacks in Europe and on other continents, including against American targets.” He called the Iranian regime “an ideologized power” and “the last 20th-century utopia,” adding: “We had Nazism, we had communism, and now we have Iranian religious fundamentalism.” Source link

New tool provides first space weather warnings months in advance

New tool provides first space weather warnings months in advance

Researchers have developed a new tool that provides a first step toward forecasting space weather weeks in advance instead of just hours. Developed by the U.S. National Science Foundation National Center for Atmospheric Research (NSF NCAR) and Southwest Research Institute (SwRI), a system for advance space weather warnings could allow agencies and industries to mitigate impacts to GPS, power grids, astronaut safety and more. The tool, known as PINNBARDS, is advancing a new generation of physics-informed, AI-enabled forecasting tools to better understand and anticipate extreme space weather. The growing threats of space weather Space weather – driven by solar flares and Coronal Mass Ejections (CMEs) – poses significant risks to our modern, technology-dependent way of life. When the Sun erupts, it releases a torrent of charged particles and radiation. If these reach Earth, they can trigger geomagnetic storms that interfere with our infrastructure in three main ways: Power grid failure: Rapidly changing magnetic fields can induce extra currents in long-distance power lines, potentially blowing out transformers and causing widespread, long-term blackouts. Satellite disruption: High-energy particles …

Barcelona advance to cup semis as Albacete’s run ends

ALBACETE, Spain, Feb 3 : Barcelona ended Albacete’s giant-killing run in the Copa del Rey, winning 2-1 away on Tuesday to become the first side to book a semi-final berth, but only after surviving a late comeback from the second-tier outfit. Lamine Yamal swept home a 39th-minute strike to open the scoring and captain Ronald Araujo netted from a second-half corner as Barcelona stayed on course to defend the trophy they won last year. Albacete pulled one back through Javier Moreno in the 87th minute and then had an effort cleared off the Barca line in stoppage time as they made a late bid for another high-profile scalp. Albacete, who sit in 12th spot in the Spanish second division, had upset Celta Vigo and Real Madrid in the previous rounds but went behind in the quarter-final tie when Marcus Rashford helped steal the ball, passing to Frenkie de Jong who in turn set up Yamal for a sweeping left-footed finish. Rashford had squandered an early chance, and Dani Olmo had a volleyed effort deflected for …

The most important quantum advance of the 21st century

The most important quantum advance of the 21st century

Since the dawn of the quantum era, perhaps no question has loomed larger in the minds of theoretical physicists than just what, exactly, the nature of reality is. Are quantum objects real, with well-defined positions and momenta, even in the absence of an observation or measurement to determine them? Out of all the ways to interpret quantum mechanics — from parallel universes to a collapsing wavefunction to theories of hidden variables — we still don’t have any evidence that favors one interpretation over another. All we’ve been able to do, even as of 2026, is rule out certain deterministic interpretations that cannot be consistent with the experiments we’ve actually performed. Nevertheless, despite how slow progress has been in uncovering the full nature of our quantum reality, humanity has taken many important steps since the founding of quantum mechanics. We’ve uncovered the deeper science of quantum field theory, understanding that not just the particles that compose reality but that even the underlying fields have a quantum nature. Bell’s theorem and Bell’s inequality have opened up whole …

Horror warning that Iran is ‘using UK charities to advance evil plans’ | Politics | News

Jack Rankin has warned of the danger of the Iranian regime using UK charities (Image: Getty) A Conservative MP has warned that the “murderous Iranian regime is abusing our charity sector to advance its evil ambitions” after revelations about UK charities with alleged extremist links. Jack Rankin issued the stark warning as the Charity Commission revealed it is investigating multiple organisations with alleged Iranian links – including one which hosted an event where speakers used anti-Semitic language and praised a sanctioned Iranian Revolutionary Guards commander. The Tory MP said: “Brits will be deeply concerned to learn of the mounting indications that the murderous Iranian regime is abusing our charity sector to advance its evil ambitions. People will rightly ask why charities […] are able to continue operating with a free hand.” He added: “The Government and Charity Commission need to get a grip. It is a betrayal not just of law-abiding Brits but of the brave Iranian people who have been murdered by the butchers of Tehran.” Read more: Trump issues horror nuke warning as …

Historic pact set to advance UK and Europe’s clean energy security

UK Energy Secretary Ed Miliband has signed a historic clean energy security pact, known as the Hamburg Declaration. The Hamburg Declaration was signed with European allies to bolster energy security for families and businesses across the UK and Europe amid global instability. The deal will drive forward an unprecedented fleet of joint offshore wind projects between European countries, including Germany, Norway, France and Denmark, taking advantage of Europe’s shared abundant energy in the North Sea. Miliband said: “We are standing up for our national interest by driving for clean energy, which can get the UK off the fossil fuel rollercoaster and give us energy sovereignty and abundance.” A commitment to clean, secure energy The UK and Europe stand together amid global headwinds to reaffirm their commitment to clean, secure energy as the only route to escape the fossil fuel rollercoaster. The deal comes after the UK held a record-breaking offshore wind auction, which unlocked 7,000 jobs and drove £22bn of private-sector investment into the UK’s factories and ports. “After our record renewables auction, we today …
