This Summer Travel Season Could Forever Alter the Future of Sustainable Aviation Fuel

Late last year, Vancouver-based aviation analyst Mark Miller bought airplane tickets to bring his family of four to Rome this summer. The Millers would spend Italy’s high season trawling the city’s ancient ruins, exploring the Vatican, and swooping down to Sardinia to experience the island’s dramatic sea cliffs, white sand beaches, and ancient limestone caves. Five months later, Miller, a commentator for CBC News, watched in disbelief as Iran closed the Strait of Hormuz—a crucial waterway between the Persian Gulf and the Gulf of Oman, through which nearly 20 percent of the world’s oil supply flows. The unprecedented closure sent global stockpiles of jet fuel plunging, depleting strategic reserves in the UK, Germany, and France. “Reports out of Europe said that the fuel supply could run low by end of June, which was about the time we would have been there,” Miller says. “The last thing we wanted to do is get stuck in Europe.” The supply shortage has spread to the US as the war in Iran continues. On Thursday, an American Airlines spokesperson …

Julio Cortez/AP hide caption toggle caption Julio Cortez/AP Stay up to date with our Up First newsletter, sent every weekday morning. A United Airlines flight from Newark, N.J., to Palma de Mallorca, Spain, pulled a U-turn late Saturday over what appears to have been a suspiciously named Bluetooth device on board. Flight tracking data shows that the flight, which should have landed in Spain after a nearly eight-hour flight, instead returned to Newark after 4 hours and 24 minutes in the air. United Airlines told NPR via email that the flight turned around “to address a potential security concern.” Multiple posts on social media from self-identified passengers indicate that the problem was a Bluetooth device on board the plane. Several of those passengers posted photos or videos of them on board the flight or in the airport, with timestamps that match the flight’s actual schedule. Some passengers knew little …

Flight UA2005, which originated in Chicago, “landed safely” at Dane County Regional Airport near Madison “to address a security concern with an unruly passenger,” a United spokesperson said. There were no reported injuries among the 147 passengers and six crew members on board. A spokesperson for the FBI’s Milwaukee office said the agency was notified of the flight’s diversion. Its Madison office and local law enforcement responded to the airport. A Dane County Sheriff’s Office official confirmed that the plane requested law enforcement assistance. “A subject was detained by the Dane County Sheriff’s Office and afterwards passengers resumed their flight,” the FBI spokesperson said. Air traffic control audio obtained by NBC News captured a discussion between ground and flight personnel when law enforcement responded to the incident. “I do not believe they ever cuffed him, but they were able to …

Kena Betancur | AFP | Getty Images Airline, hotel and other industry groups are urging the White House and top Trump administration officials to abandon a proposal that would cut off immigration processing at major airports, including Newark Liberty International Airport in New Jersey, a United Airlines hub. United CEO Scott Kirby was set to discuss the proposal with Homeland Security Secretary Markwayne Mullin to convey the disruptions the policies could cause to travelers, according to two people familiar with the previously unreported call who spoke on condition of anonymity to talk about a private conversation. Airlines for America, a trade association whose members include American Airlines, United Airlines and Delta Air Lines told White House officials this week that reducing Customs and Border Protection service at Newark, New Jersey’s airport would “create havoc” for U.S. citizens, which make up the bulk of the 20,000 passengers flying in internationally to the airport, according to a document that was seen …

Trump weighs pulling immigration, customs in ‘sanctuary city’ airports

Charly Triballeau | Afp | Getty Images Groups representing the largest U.S. airlines and hotel chains slammed the Trump administration’s potential halt of customs and immigration processing at “sanctuary city” airports, warning such a move could have “devastating” consequences on the industry. Homeland Security Secretary Markwayne Mullin said in an interview on Fox News’ “Hannity” on Tuesday night that if “radical left Democrats” aren’t allowing the government to “enforce federal laws … we shouldn’t be processing international flights into their cities either.” The secretary’s comments came just ahead of the FIFA World Cup next month that is expected to bring millions of visitors to host cities in the U.S., Canada and Mexico, drawing alarm from the travel industry. Mullin said the Trump administration is “drawing up plans” but isn’t putting anything into place yet. The timing of the idea being floated raises questions about whether the administration is using its leverage to try to persuade cities whose immigration policies …

Scandal after scandal lands Spain’s Sánchez on the ropes – POLITICO

Scandal after scandal lands Spain’s Sánchez on the ropes – POLITICO

This isn’t the only scandal affecting the Sánchez government, is it? No. Last June, Sánchez was forced to apologize after it emerged that his confidant and Socialist Party No. 3, Santos Cerdán, was under investigation for involvement in a massive public contract kickback scheme. Also caught up in that scandal was José Luis Ábalos, a former senior figure in the Socialist Party and transport minister, who had already been under investigation. Deepening the party’s embarrassment, evidence also emerged that Ábalos paid prostitutes on a number of occasions. Both men have denied involvement in the kickback scheme. They are awaiting the verdict but are expected to face trial again in the future over other probes. That all sounds pretty …

Europe beefs up Ebola detection as Congo epidemic surges – POLITICO

Earlier this week Italy reported two suspected cases among passengers who had arrived from Uganda, but they later tested negative for Ebola, the disease prevention agency said. Meanwhile, Belgium has direct daily flights to and from Congo. Brussels Airlines said Wednesday it is making changes to its crew schedules given that the United States has banned entry to the country from the region, but added: “These changes are being implemented without affecting the current flight schedule.” “In times like these, flights are more vital than ever to keep the region connected and to allow vital medication and medically trained personnel to reach the affected areas,” the airline said in a statement. The airline, which is part of the Lufthansa Group, added that it remains “committed to maintaining its flight schedule whenever possible.” This deadly outbreak is caused by the Bundibugyo virus, for which there are no treatments or vaccines. The World Health Organization said talks were ongoing with developers of two experimental vaccines, while German diagnostic firm Altona said it aimed to provide a test …

American Airlines Signs Up for Starlink Wi-Fi Service on Its Flights

American Airlines Signs Up for Starlink Wi-Fi Service on Its Flights

American Airlines passengers could begin to connect to in-flight Wi-Fi through SpaceX’s Starlink satellite network next year. The airline announced Tuesday that it signed a deal with Elon Musk’s aerospace company to install Starlink internet across its Airbus fleet in 2027, which includes more than 500 narrowbody aircraft. Commercial flights drive heavy internet usage, as passengers work on cloud-based documents or stream movies and TV shows, activities that require substantial data and reliable Wi-Fi connectivity. Starlink is among the fastest in-flight internet options, with reported speeds nearly twice those of the next-closest competitor and comparable to or faster than some terrestrial broadband services. More than 10,000 satellites in low Earth orbit drive the system’s performance. By operating much closer to Earth than traditional satellites, they reduce latency — the time it takes for data to travel. CNET senior writer Jeff Carlson tested Starlink’s in-flight internet on United Airlines and was impressed by the internet experience. “Honestly, I’d think I was at home on my high-speed fiber internet if not for the cabin noise and the occasional tight …

Starlink WiFi coming to 500+ American Airlines planes

Starlink WiFi coming to 500+ American Airlines planes

American Air inked a deal with Starlink to equip 500 of the airline’s planes with the satellite internet provider’s WiFi. In an announcement made today, American described Starlink “as the world’s most advanced satellite constellation” and touted its ability to deliver powerful broadband internet via its thousands of satellites flying in low Earth orbit. Starlink will connect to American’s narrow body planes — smaller aircraft that typically fly shorter routes — starting in the early months of 2027. Starlink, part of Elon Musk’s SpaceX, will connect to the planes via its Aero Terminal, which can support up to 1 Gbps of data per antenna. American promises that Starlink WiFi will enable fliers to not just smoothly access their email, but stream entertainment, conduct on-camera work meetings, and play online games.
