Eze and Havertz injured as Arsenal win the hard way against Newcastle

Eze and Havertz injured as Arsenal win the hard way against Newcastle

Mikel Arteta has called Arsenal’s game against Newcastle United the start of a “new season” after a fortnight in which their nine-point lead over Manchester City evaporated. The two title contenders are both locked on 70 points and the same goal difference, with City top courtesy of scoring three more goals. Arsenal surrendered control of the race by losing at the Etihad last Sunday. While City’s victory made them bookmakers’ favourites to win the title, there were perhaps reasons for optimism. The presence of Eberechi Eze, Martin Odegaard and Kai Havertz in the same line-up helped Arsenal produce possibly their best performance of 2026, and they were the width of a post away from getting a result. Bukayo Saka and Riccardo Calafiori returning to the squad today strengthens them further, and fixtures against Newcastle, Fulham, West Ham, Burnley and Crystal Palace look like a favourable run-in. Much depends on whether they can mentally recover from butchering so many opportunities to put Manchester City to bed throughout the season, notably in January when Pep Guardiola’s team …

Haaland and City bully Arsenal to take control of title race

Haaland and City bully Arsenal to take control of title race

A defiant Mikel Arteta insisted the real title race starts now despite defeat at the Etihad Stadium handing the advantage to Manchester City.  City will go top via a superior goal difference if they beat Burnley on Wednesday and now appear to have all the momentum. But Arsenal midfielder Declan Rice was seen telling his team-mates at full-time that it is “not done”. Those views were later echoed by Arteta, who said of his players: “If they need to be more convinced, I think they are now. They were talking about it in the dressing room. It’s a new league now: they have a game in hand, we have a three-point advantage and five games to play. “Everything is still to play for. We know how much we want it and we are not going to stop. We are going to go again, that is for sure. We have full belief that we can do it – it is in our hands and it’s there for the taking.” Guardiola said the result gives hope to …

Arsenal booed off after Bournemouth defeat sets off alarm bells for Arteta

Arsenal booed off after Bournemouth defeat sets off alarm bells for Arteta

On your marks, get set… pray! The starting gun for the Premier League run-in will sound this lunchtime at the Emirates, where most of the crowd will be pleading for a stress-free victory over Bournemouth. It’s easy to forget, given all the recent negativity, that Arsenal’s last Premier League game ended with one of the most euphoric moments of the entire season – the joyous celebration of Max Dowman’s clinching goal against Everton.  That game was almost a month ago. During the Premier League’s spring break Arsenal went out of both domestic cup competitions and Manchester City produced arguably their two best performances of the season to beat Arsenal in the Carabao Cup final and thrash Liverpool in the FA Cup. Arsenal’s short-term priority is to keep the title out of Manchester City’s hands. They are nine points ahead clear with seven games to play, though City have a game in a hand. If Arsenal win today, their trip to the Etihad next Sunday will remain a free hit, or at least a freeish hit. …

Arsenal must wake up or there will be nothing to celebrate this season

Arsenal must wake up or there will be nothing to celebrate this season

Mikel Arteta took full responsibility for Arsenal’s shock FA Cup quarter-final defeat at the hands of Championship side Southampton as he refused to criticise his players for their meek performance. The Arsenal manager has overseen back-to-back defeats for the first time this season, with this dismal 2-1 loss coming after the Carabao Cup final defeat by Manchester City. Those losses have destroyed Arsenal’s dream of winning an unprecedented quadruple and significantly raised the pressure on the Premier League leaders ahead of the defining weeks of the campaign. Arteta said “now is the moment” for his team to stand up, as they remain in strong positions in both the Premier League and Champions League. “I love my players,”  the Arsenal manager said. “What they have done for nine months, I am not going to criticise them because we lost a game here. The way they are putting their bodies through everything, some of them probably didn’t even have to be here today. “I’m not going to do that [blame the players]. I’m going to defend them …

Keir Starmer finally has something to celebrate as he goes wild at Arsenal game | Politics | News

The Prime Minister took responsibility for the “mistake” of appointing the peer, who was arrested on suspicion of misconduct in public office last month, but denied accusations of a cover-up and said no notes from him had been redacted in the so-called Mandelson files. But it emerged this week that Sir Keir was warned of a “general reputational risk” in sending Mandelson to Washington, linked to his continuing relationship with Epstein after the financier’s conviction for procuring an underage girl in 2008. The Prime Minister’s global outlook doesn’t look much better than his domestic prospects, with the war in Iran continuing to push energy and petrol bills up, with no end in sight, despite Donald Trump’s claims. While the impact on British wallets will depend on how long the conflict between the US, Israel and Iran goes on for, analysts have suggested petrol could hit £2 a litre if it drags into summer, with energy prices potentially rising by over £500. Thinktank the Resolution Foundation said: “If recent rises in the price of oil and …

Max Dowman, 16, may have provided crowning moment in Arsenal’s title charge

Max Dowman, 16, may have provided crowning moment in Arsenal’s title charge

Hello and welcome to coverage from the Emirates Stadium as Arsenal look to extend their lead at the top of the Premier League table with victory over Everton. The league leaders will start the match seven points clear of Manchester City, who have a game in hand, and play West Ham at 8pm tonight. With City 3-0 down to Real Madrid ahead of the second leg next week, their focus this evening could be elsewhere and should Arsenal move 10 points ahead, the pressure would be on to respond. But in north London, Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta has dismissed suggestions they have adopted a siege mentality amid mounting pressure. “You just have to go in that dressing room and feel the mood, the energy and the way we talk to each other and how much we value the position that we have right now,” Arteta said.  “So our focus is on what ‌we have to ‌do, what we have to maintain and what we have to improve together.” With no FA Cup fixture last week, …
