A few months ago I found a paperback copy of George Orwell’s “1984” on a city bus. American Bankers Association (ABA) CEO Rob Nichols sent an emergency Sunday letter to every bank CEO in the country, urging “immediate engagement” against what he called a stablecoin yield loophole in the Digital Asset Market Clarity Act, days before a Senate Banking Committee markup scheduled for Thursday. The letter, dated May 11 — Mother’s Day — and addressed to ABA member bank CEOs, asked bank leaders to contact their senators and mobilize their employees to do the same before the committee convenes for a scheduled May 14 executive session on the bill. “I am reaching out to make every bank leader in this country aware of an urgent advocacy fight that requires your immediate engagement,” Nichols wrote, according to the letter. He warned that, without further changes, “we believe the current proposal would unnecessarily incentivize the flight of bank deposits into payment stablecoins, putting both economic growth and financial stability at risk”. Cole Tomas Allen on Thursday told a judge he was waiving his right to challenge his detention in jail — for now — on charges of trying to assassinate President Donald Trump at the White House Correspondents’ Association dinner last Saturday night. Allen’s waiver came a day after his defense team, in a court filing, sought his release on bond pending trial, and after prosecutors in their own filing laid out arguments for why he should remain in jail. “He’s conceding detention at this time,” Allen’s lawyer, Tezira Abe, told Magistrate Judge Moxila Upadhyaya, during a hearing in U.S. District Court in Washington on Thursday. Abe said Allen was reserving his right to challenge his detention at a future date. Abe told Upadhyaya that she and Allen’s other lawyer had difficulty meeting with the defendant over the past several days, but spoke to him on Thursday morning before the hearing. In recent weeks, as criticism of President Donald Trump from his own supporters has reached a fever pitch, a new conspiracy theory has taken hold: Some of the president’s biggest supporters are now claiming, without evidence, that Trump staged the assassination attempt on his life in Butler, Pennsylvania in 2024 and is covering it up. During an open-air campaign rally on July 13, 2024, Trump survived an attempted assassination when a bullet fired by a 20-year-old on a roof nearby clipped the top of his ear. Corey Comperatore, a Trump supporter sitting near the president, was shot and killed. The shooter was later killed by Secret Service agents. (Update 1245ET): House Republicans thwarted Democrats’ attempt to unanimously restrict President Donald Trump’s war powers in Iran, declining to recognize the lawmaker who sought to offer it during a pro forma session Thursday. As Bloomberg reports, the forced-adoption attempt was destined to fail, but it previewed Democrats’ focus on rebuking the war in Iran when the chamber returns to session next week. Rep. Glenn Ivey (D-Md.) asked for unanimous consent to advance the Iran war powers resolution during a pro forma, or ceremonial, session held during the congressional recess. Rep. Chris Smith (R-N.J.), who was presiding, didn’t acknowledge Ivey to speak. Democrats can try to force a full House vote on the resolution next week when lawmakers return to Washington.
