All you need is a resistance band and this versatile Pilates-inspired workout to keep fit anywhere

Going on vacation? Pilates coach Jo-Leigh Morris says packing a resistance band is “non-negotiable”. They are lightweight, versatile and perfect for a “full-body burn anywhere”. To demonstrate the point, she recently shared a full-body Pilates-inspired routine, perched beside a wanderlust-worthy infinity pool. Latest Videos From You may like But you don’t need your passport to enjoy the benefits Morris is promoting—all you need is 15 minutes and a resistance band to strengthen and mobilize your whole body. “If you’re new to this style of training, focus on slow, controlled movement over speed,” the classically-trained Pilates instructor tells Fit&Well. “The burn comes from precision, not rushing. The more connected you feel to the movement, the stronger you’ll get.” How to do the workout Perform each move for 60 seconds, one after the other, to complete one round. Band together to save small businesses | Shops and shopping

Band together to save small businesses | Shops and shopping

In Kings Heath we faced a problem similar to the one that concerns Janie Toy (Letters, 19 May). The solution was for the community to band together and buy the shop, so we did. Our beloved York Supplies remains, as a successful community co-op still selling you an array of hardware, amazing plants, and one nail if that’s all you want. Members of the buyout committee are happy to have their brains picked by others wanting to retain small businesses important to their communities.Naomi StandenKings Heath, Birmingham I wrote to you a few years ago, explaining that, as a fellow member of Newcastle Labour party, I was a bit miffed that Jeremy Beecham had more success than I did in getting letters published (Letters, 19 May). In my unpublished letter, I wrote: “The letters ed’s a busy chap, / I’ve found it hard to reach ’im. / I think I’ll have to change my name to ‘Lord Jeremy Beecham’.”Christine HartasMickleton, County Durham Let’s not forget the man who made the bus in seconds flat, found …

Inventor plays homemade electromagnetic bagpipes in rock band

But even among the instrument’s diehard defenders, most wouldn’t spend years designing, building, and perfecting an electromagnetic variant. But that’s exactly what one intrepid hobbyist in the United Kingdom has accomplished—although he first began toying with the idea 30 years ago. “This project started back in 1996 when I hacked an Irish Uilleann bagpipe chanter by replacing the cane reed with a homemade reed made from carbon steel,” he explained on his Hackaday project page. Although most famously associated with Scotland, various iterations of bagpipe instruments are documented in regions around the world like North Africa, East Asia, and the Persian Gulf. The Uilleann or Irish pipes date back to the 18th century and operate similarly to their Scottish relatives. To play them, a wearer operates small bellows strapped around the waist to blow relatively dry air through pipe reeds while using them like flutes. Uilleann pipes typically encompass two …

Get stronger with this beginner-friendly resistance band workout for full-body fitness

Get stronger with this beginner-friendly resistance band workout for full-body fitness

Resistance bands are an underrated piece of fitness equipment in my opinion. They can build strength just as well as free weights, but are easier to store and less expensive. But one downside of bands, compared with free weights, is that you don’t know precisely how much more resistance you’re working against when you change your hand position. At least that was the case until I discovered Strong Band from Cyan Koay and Matt Van Mol, two personal trainers who have added numbered markers to their bands to help track progress. Latest Videos From You may like Cyan Koay and Matt Van Mol (Image credit: Strong Band) “Most resistance bands leave people guessing,” Van Mol tells Fit&Well. “How to set them up, how much resistance they’re using, and whether they’re actually progressing. We found this limits people from actually building strength with bands. We started Strong Band to remove that guesswork so people can get effective results. “Strong Band turns resistance bands from a general tool you gauge with feeling into something more clear and …

A trainer says this is the strengthening resistance band workout you should do if you only have 20 minutes to spare

When you only have 20 minutes to work out, the last thing you want to do is waste any time traveling to the gym. But training at home doesn’t mean you can’t get in a good strength session. Resistance bands offer the perfect solution for those who don’t have the space for a home gym, or even dumbbells, but want to perform traditional strength training moves. Whoop vs. Fitbit Air: I compared Google’s new fitness band to the industry favorite

Nina Raemont/Google/ZDNET Follow ZDNET: Add us as a preferred source on Google. Fitness bands are making a comeback, and Google wants in on the party. On Thursday, the tech giant announced its new screenless fitness band, the Fitbit Air, to its health tracker offerings.  The $100 Fitbit Air takes aim at popular fitness band, Whoop, as an inexpensive alternative to the premium health tracker (annual subscriptions start at $200 a year, going up to $360). While Whoop caters to a serious athletic audience, the Fitbit Air goes more mainstream, designed for regular users at a more approachable price point (and no subscription required).  Also: This minimalist fitness tracker is a refreshing alternative (with no subscription) The devices are similar. They ditch the screen for a band form factor, and utilize apps as the center of the health-tracking experience. They both track activity, sleep, recovery, and stress, and of course, they have complex AI assistants (though Google’s AI Health Coach sits behind its premium membership tier).  So which should you buy? That depends on how much you’re willing …

This Reggae Band Is in a Nightmare Battle Against AI Slop Remixes

This Reggae Band Is in a Nightmare Battle Against AI Slop Remixes

The California-based reggae band Stick Figure has been around for 20 years, eight albums, and countless hours on the road, but lead vocalist and guitarist Scott Woodruff has never seen a track take off like “Angels Above Me” did this past week. The seven-year-old song hit number one on the iTunes sales charts in six different countries, including the United Kingdom, Austria, and Canada, skyrocketing “out of nowhere,” according to Woodruff. Stick Figure has had plenty of thrilling milestones before, with albums repeatedly hitting number one in the reggae category, and hit singles amassing hundreds of millions of streams. But the speed at which this track went from a years-old sleeper to a smash was new. People were posting TikToks about it, gushing with enthusiasm. “It was exciting,” Woodruff says. “But then once I found it was because of some version that was basically stolen and generated in one click, I mean, it’s saddening.” Stick Figure is grappling with a thoroughly modern music business conundrum: It has a hit tune—but most of the plays and …
