‘Bath, Harrogate … Woodhall?’ A short break in one of the UK’s most forgotten spa towns | Lincolnshire holidays

‘Bath, Harrogate … Woodhall?’ A short break in one of the UK’s most forgotten spa towns | Lincolnshire holidays

It was 6.30am, the cockcrow slot at Jubilee Park lido, and still not quite light. I hadn’t wanted to come this early – it was the only time I’d been able to book. But as I slid into the pool – heated to a delicious 29C – I realised it was a gift. Vapours rose dreamily into cool air laced with owl hoots and the whiff of dewy blooms, and I swam into a sunrise that became more vivid with every stroke. A man in the next lane paused to admire the reddening dawn too; he was hungover, he said, but had come to do his morning lengths nonetheless. A cure of sorts. This Lincolnshire village isn’t one of Britain’s headline spa towns. Most probably don’t know where it is – 18 miles (29km east of Lincoln, for the record. But at the turn of the 20th century, Woodhall Spa was …

Bath break Northampton hearts on one of European club rugby’s great nights

Bath break Northampton hearts on one of European club rugby’s great nights

It would be doing Bath a massive disservice to suggest they were all route one as they demonstrated with their third try which was strike play perfection. The scrum was solid and Redpath felt Russell, who faked pumped once to draw a gap to send Henry Arundell scurrying under the posts. Then right on half-time came a try that both coaches identified as a key momentum shift as shortly after Smith missed a penalty to touch, replacement Francois van Wyk was driven over. Russell missed leaving the game tantalising poised at 35-26 to the visitors. After the madness of the first half, Smith took the first conservative decision of the game, by kicking a penalty in front of the posts. However, Saints were reduced to 14 men when JJ van der Mescht was sin-binned following repeated offences in the 22. Bath kicked to the corner and piled what seemed like half of Somerset into the maul with replacement Kepu Tuipulotu grounding the ball. Russell’s conversion made it a five-point game. Another Smith penalty gave Saints …

University of Bath bio-based polymer removes PFAS from water

University of Bath bio-based polymer removes PFAS from water

UK scientists have pioneered a reusable bio-based membrane highly effective at capturing PFAS, offering a potential shift in sustainable water treatment. A research team at the University of Bath has developed a bio-based polymer membrane that can extract persistent per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS),  otherwise known as forever chemicals, from water while maintaining reusability – an advance that could reshape approaches to PFAS remediation. PFAS, including perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA), are widely detected contaminants linked to serious health risks such as cancer, endocrine disruption, and immune effects. Their chemical stability makes them difficult to remove using existing treatment technologies, which often involve trade-offs between efficiency, cost, and environmental impact. A material designed to respond to water The newly reported bio-based membrane is built from ultra-fine polymer fibres derived from renewable feedstocks rather than fossil-based inputs. These nanoscale-engineered fibres exhibit an unusual structural response when exposed to water. Instead of remaining static, the fibrous network absorbs moisture and reorganises. This process causes the structure to contract, effectively tightening around pollutants suspended in the water. The result is …

I had 24 hours of wellness in Bath – here’s the ultimate itinerary

I had 24 hours of wellness in Bath – here’s the ultimate itinerary

When you’re a busy working mum, having two minutes to yourself is sometimes like a fully-fledged spa day – a solo trip to the bathroom, a hot cup of tea enjoyed during nap hour or let’s be honest, an uninterrupted Instagram scroll. But how about a full 24 hours to fully reset, relax and totally chill out? I jumped at the chance of a whirlwind wellness press trip to Bath via Visit Bath to immerse myself in everything zen the city has to offer. Discover why this West Country gem is a destination that’s good for your mind, body and soul in equal measure… The irony is that the morning of the trip was filled with maximum stress with poorly parents to assist, a toddler to ship off to the childminder and a broken-down car, I was nowhere near ready for chilling out – but I clearly needed it! It was a 10-minute train ride from Bristol to Bath Spa, barely enough time to decompress, but there would be plenty of time for that later. No. 15 …

The same combination instantly combined again, this time Ojomoh pulled the ball back to Cokanasiga cutting a devastating line. The wing could easily have scored himself but unselfishly obeyed his captain Spencer’s instruction to pass inside.
