Beloved 90s pop groups who completely vanished after facing crushing legal battles

Music is one of the most creative and emotional art forms available to us – but, unfortunately, once bands make it big there’s a whole lot of admin to get through. From bankruptcy to copyright claims and disputes over ownership, bands through the ’90s were hit with all kinds of legal battles. Read on to find out which artists behind your club night classics ended up in court. © WireImage via Getty Images David Byrne sued his former bandmates when they tried to tour as ‘Heads’ in 1995 Talking Heads Talking Heads might have defined the ’80s but their legal battles took the band straight back into the cultural zeitgeist in the ’90s. While the band didn’t officially break up until 1991, tensions had been brewing as David Byrne took control over the band. When the other three members attempted to tour as The Heads in 1996, with a more relaxed vocalist in tow, David took them to court. They’ve only performed live once since then, for their 2002 induction into the Rock and Roll …

News Analysis: Uncertainty, frustration define messy midterm battles for mayor, governor and Congress

News Analysis: Uncertainty, frustration define messy midterm battles for mayor, governor and Congress

With little more than a week left until primary voters winnow the candidates for Los Angeles mayor, California governor and Congress, there remains a palpable sense of political uncertainty among the electorate — attributable to a lack of clear front-runners, redrawn political maps, messy party infighting and competing voter frustration with both President Trump and the state’s Democratic establishment. In a state where Democrats hold a substantial advantage among registered voters and Trump lost in 2024 by more than 20 percentage points, MAGA-aligned Republicans are nonetheless competing on a message of ineptitude from longtime liberal leaders to address the state’s most intractable problems. Even some Democrats have railed against the status quo. With Trump’s grip on the Republican base intact despite abysmal overall approval ratings, many Republican candidates have courted his approval — and been hammered for it by their Democratic opponents. But those same Democrats have found it harder to explain why their own party should continue to lead the state despite allowing its affordability, housing and homelessness crises to take root and persist …

Kalshi battles Rhode Island officials as prediction markets face state challenges

Kalshi battles Rhode Island officials as prediction markets face state challenges

Kalshi sued Rhode Island officials on Thursday (May 21), accusing the state of trying to block its federally regulated prediction market business through threatened gambling enforcement. The complaint landed in the U.S. District Court for the District of Rhode Island and immediately escalated a widening national fight over sports-related event contracts. The lawsuit names Rhode Island Attorney General Peter F. Neronha, Division of State Lottery Director Mark Furcolo, and Gaming and Athletics Administrator Christina Tobiasz. Kalshi said state officials appeared ready to move against the company over contracts traded on its federally regulated exchange. ‘Mortal Kombat II’ Battles ‘Prada 2’ for Weekend Win

‘Mortal Kombat II’ Battles ‘Prada 2’ for Weekend Win

In a battle of the genders, New Line’s video game adaptation Mortal Kombat II and 20th Century’s The Devil Wears Prada 2 are in a close race for No. 1 at the domestic box office. The Mortal Kombat sequel, fueled by males, topped Friday with an opening-day gross of $17 million range, including $5.2 million in previews and special Imax sneaks. That puts it on course for a domestic opening in the $40 million to $41 million range; ditto for Prada 2, which came in second Friday with $9.8 million for a stellar domestic total of $111.6 million and well north of $300 million globally. Heading into the weekend, some tracking services showed Mortal Kombat II opening to $45 million or more. New Line and parent company Warner Bros., however, had always predicted a far more conservative launch in the $35 million range to $40 million range for a worldwide bow anywhere between $65 million and $80 million. Males made up more than 75 percent of Friday’s audience, which bestowed the film with a B+ CinemaScore. …

Redistricting Battles Heat Up After Supreme Court Ruling

Redistricting Battles Heat Up After Supreme Court Ruling

Authored by Jackson Richman via The Epoch Times, The U.S. Supreme Court’s recent landmark ruling on redistricting has prompted lawmakers in multiple states to reconsider their electoral maps ahead of the 2026 midterms. The decision, issued on April 29, focused on a congressional map that Louisiana drew after a lower court stated that a prior map violated the Voting Rights Act. That law prohibits race-based discrimination in election practices. The lower court stated that Louisiana’s initial map discriminated against black people by not including an additional majority-black district. The Supreme Court’s recent decision in Louisiana v. Callais stated that the lower court decision, which resulted in Louisiana drawing a new map, erred. A majority of the justices said race could not be a primary consideration when states draw maps for elections. The ruling has caused states, particularly in the South, to redraw their congressional maps ahead of the midterms. Since Texas redrew its House districts to favor Republicans last year, eight states have adopted new congressional maps. Republicans believe the changes could net them as …

The 4 Words That Make Homework Battles Worse

The 4 Words That Make Homework Battles Worse

“Just get it done.” You certainly mean that four-word phrase with good intentions. Those four words likely sound harmless to you. After all, you are being direct and looking out for your child’s best interests. So, why can’t you just say those words, and then your child or teen reengages in their homework or whatever assignments are due? Yet in my work with children and families, and in conversations with parents who consult me about their kids shutting down from schoolwork, this phrase marks the moment when things go sideways. Specifically, when kids hear “Just get it done,” they often retreat from taking action. That’s because they feel alone in what feels like impossible demands. So, they lose sight of what they can do and focus on the feelings of what they can’t do. And that often means that they shut down. Why These Words Backfire When a child is already feeling overwhelmed, unsure where to begin, and just plain old worried about making mistakes, “Just get it done” does not imbue motivation. Rather, it …

Sabalenka battles past Osaka in Madrid epic to reach quarter-finals

Sabalenka battles past Osaka in Madrid epic to reach quarter-finals

MADRID, April 27 : World number one Aryna Sabalenka roared back from a set down to beat Naomi Osaka 6-7(1), 6-3, 6-2 in a pulsating Madrid Open clash on Monday, keeping her title defence alive. The Belarusian, a three-times champion in the Spanish capital and winner last year, weathered an early storm from former world number one Osaka before asserting her authority in a contest that lasted two hours 22 minutes. It was only the third meeting between the pair who have won four Grand Slams each — the previous encounters coming at Indian Wells this season and nearly eight years ago when Osaka beat Sabalenka at the 2018 U.S. Open. A nervy, finely balanced first set went to a tiebreak. Osaka, serving first, edged ahead as Sabalenka misfired at the net and the Japanese produced a sharp counterattack to seize control. Osaka raced into a 5-0 lead, and wrapped up the breaker 7-1 to take the set 7-6. Osaka was close to flawless from the baseline in the opener, firing deep, flat groundstrokes that …
