“Do you think about me?” So asks a disembodied voice at the beginning of a TikTok from user @velvet.mind. The question is followed by hypnotic synth pulses, hissing static, and sped-up, garbled human speech. An accompanying visual: a montage of immaculately made-up and stylish women who could all be models—indeed, some of them probably are. The text overlaid on the video reads “extreme beauty subliminal.” The minute-long clip has nearly 300,000 likes and 1.4 million views. Why all this engagement for a bit of vaporwave ephemera? Because an online community of young women sincerely believe that sustained exposure to these sounds and images will improve their physical appearance. According to the creator, the indecipherable words are a series of affirmations that include “My face is naturally symmetrical, balanced, and breathtaking” and “I have flawless, poreless, glowing skin.” Listeners are meant to subconsciously internalize and manifest such ideals; they echo that language in their replies, speaking their beauty goals into existence. “I am drop-dead gorgeous,” one comment reads. The cosmos is set to put on a show later this week when a celestial event reaches its peak. The Eta Aquariid meteor shower will reach its crescendo between midnight and dawn on Wednesday. British stargazers will have the best chance of witnessing the shower closer to dawn at locations removed from streetlamp and other light pollution. Eta Aquariid is active between 19 April and 28 May this year, according to Royal Museums Greenwich (RMG). Minutes from the seaside and steeped in history, Rye is often dubbed the UK’s ‘most naturally beautiful town’. Well, having found myself on a cramped rail replacement bus in the blistering sunshine, it had a lot to prove. Located just over an hour from Central London, the cobbled streets and charming half-timbered houses are enough to almost immediately melt away lingering frustration. Despite arriving on a summer-esque Saturday afternoon, the ancient parish made for a relaxed day out filled with picturesque views, local ales and top-notch food. The first stop of the day was Cobbles Tea Room, a decades-old establishment boasting vintage crockery and a sun trap courtyard. The menu did not disappoint; ‘light lunches’ fit for three and warm scones smothered in layers of tart jam and rich clotted cream.
