British Film Institute CEO Ben Roberts and creative director of Picturehouse Clare Binns took to Edinburgh Film Festival’s Central Hall on Saturday for a keynote discussion on the future of British independent film. Binns was asking Roberts about how the BFI spends its money — the organization has £150 million ($203m) to disburse over three years, much of it given to the organization via government grants and National Lottery revenue — and kicked off by discussing how difficult it is to get smaller projects off the ground and to a wide audience. “We often forget to talk about the actors that have been discovered or platformed through lottery-funded or publicly funded films and gone on to be huge stars,” Roberts began. “Tom Holland, his second film was called How I Live Now [released in 2013] with the great Kevin Macdonald and funded with lottery money, [and] that [put] him on a particular path. Ben Jones, the actor best known for portraying trusty mechanic Cooter Davenport on “The Dukes of Hazzard” before serving two terms in Congress as a representative from Georgia, has died. He was 84. Jones died Sunday of a heart attack at his home in Virginia, his wife, Alma Viator, said on social media. “I lost the love of my life today,” Viator wrote on Facebook. “Ben passed from a massive heart attack. He was home resting in his favorite chair waiting for the Braves to come on and whoop the Yankees. Ben had the most amazing rich full life. He loved and was loved by so many. He will be missed. The cause of death of Ben Affleck’s mother, Chris Anne Affleck, has been revealed after the proud grandmother passed away on June 2 aged 83. According to the death certificate obtained by Us Weekly, Chris was visiting Ben’s home in Los Angeles when she died of a cardiopulmonary arrest, with her time of death being listed as 10:52 a.m. Contributing factors to her death included pancreatic adenocarcinoma, which was diagnosed in December. No autopsy was performed. News of Chris’ passing broke in late July, and her obituary in The Boston Globe detailed her final wish to be there for her grandson’s milestone.   “Her greatest wish after her diagnosis, however, was to live to see her grandson [Atticus] graduate high school,” the obituary read. “She did so, attending with her family on May 31, 2026.
