Bess Wohl Is 2nd American Woman to Win

Bess Wohl Is 2nd American Woman to Win

Liberation won the 2026 Tony Award for best play, making playwright Bess Wohl only the second American woman to win in the category and the first in close to 40 years. The play, about a feminist group meeting in Ohio in the 1970s, won the Pulitzer Prize for drama last month. The play follows a narrator describing her mother’s creation of the group and inserting herself into the imagined group setting, amid infighting, pushes for progress and a radical reimagining of womanhood, as well as a reckoning of where that stands now.  Wohl has said the plot was partly inspired by her mother, Lisa Cronin Wohl, who worked for Gloria Steinem’s Ms. Magazine. “I really need first to thank my mom, who taught me to use my imagination. I need to thank my daughters, who love to remind me that I couldn’t have done it without them and their right,” Wohl said onstage. With the win, Wohl is also the first woman to win a Tony Award for best play since 2009, when Yasmina Reza …

ELM MicroGrid installs battery storage in its hometown

ELM MicroGrid installs battery storage in its hometown

Battery energy storage specialist ELM MicroGrid has spent more than two decades building a nationwide energy storage and utility infrastructure businesses. Now, the company is bringing that expertise home with the installation of a new battery energy storage system at a solar microgrid project in Peoria, IL. Part of the 2.5-megawatt Peoria Solar Energy Center that broke ground last year, the ELM MicroGrid batteries will help the new Peoria microgrid project produce and manage enough electricity to power more than 400 homes and businesses, provide an economic boost to the region. “At a time when the demand for electricity is outpacing supply in Downstate Illinois, more energy needs to be generated and connected to the grid faster to provide reliability and cost saving benefits for our customers,” said Lenny Singh, Chairman and President of Ameren Illinois, at the project’s launch. “Thanks to a provision in the state’s Climate and Equitable Jobs Act, the Peoria Solar Energy Center – alongside our two other solar facilities in East St. Louis – will produce clean, reliable, and equitable …

Ford launches Ford Energy subsidiary to build 20 GWh of battery storage annually

Ford has officially unveiled Ford Energy, a wholly owned subsidiary that will manufacture and sell U.S.-assembled battery energy storage systems (BESS) for utilities, data centers, and large industrial customers. The new unit plans to produce 20 GWh of energy storage annually from its Kentucky gigafactory. The move formalizes what has been months in the making — Ford’s pivot from struggling EV battery overcapacity to the booming grid-scale energy storage market, where demand is surging thanks to AI data centers and renewable energy buildout. From EV battery overcapacity to energy storage play Ford Energy didn’t come out of nowhere. As we covered in December, Ford announced plans to convert its EV battery plants to make battery storage for data centers after it became clear that demand for EV batteries wasn’t absorbing the capacity Ford had built. That announcement came just days after Ford and SK On killed their massive $11.4 billion BlueOval SK joint venture, splitting their battery factories between the two companies. Ford Energy President Lisa Drake, who was appointed to lead the new subsidiary …

Bess Wohl’s Liberation, exploring 1970s feminist consciousness-raising groups, secured the drama prize. Kraus, 50, boasts a diverse career, including collaborations with filmmakers George Romero and Guillermo del Toro. The Pulitzer committee lauded Angel Down as “a stylistic tour-de-force that blends such genres as allegory, magical realism, and science fiction into a cohesive whole, told in a single sentence.” From left, “Angel Down” by Daniel Kraus, “Pride and Pleasure: The Schuyler Sisters in an Age of Revolution” by Amanda Vail,” “There is No Place for Us: Working and Homeless in America” by Brian Goldstone, “Things in Nature Merely Grow” by Yiyun Li, and “We the People: …

Windrose wants to containerize the data center

Windrose wants to containerize the data center

Windrose is making big, fast moves in the heavy-duty EV space with its electric semi truck business already expanding into four continents — but CEO Wen Han doesn’t want to stop there. He’s got an idea for a mobile data center and BESS solution packed into one, and he really wants us to know about it. Windrose CEO Wen Han has been making headlines with his ultra-capable electric semi trucks, but herecently took to LinkedIn recently to promote a whole new idea that’s less about the trucks, and more about what they’re hauling. Launched under the headline, “Windrose = AI = energy in a box.” The idea described two standard-sized shipping containers (pulled by a Windrose R700, of course) with one packed full of batteries and the other packed with server racks and cooling equipment. What’s really wild, however, isn’t the idea — it’s the fact that Wen was in such a hurry to put the concept “out there” that he apparently used Google Gemini-rendered images (shown, above) to illustrate the concept. Duke Energy brings $100M, 50 MW battery project online

Just in time for this weekend’s wicked weather, Duke Energy has powered up a 50 MW grid battery at the former Allen coal plant — a major infrastructure upgrade that could help stabilize the grid and drive down energy costs across the Carolinas. Built on the shuttered Allen coal plant on Lake Wylie in Gaston County, NC, Duke Energy’s new 50 MW battery storage system arrived both under budget and ahead of schedule. The $100 million project, which has been serving customers since November, marks a departure from the delays typical of first-mover infrastructure and points to a maturing, bankable battery energy storage sector. “We’re building new resources to keep the Carolinas’ economy thriving, while reinvesting in a former coal plant community that helped power this region for decades,” explains Kendal Bowman, President at Duke Energy North Carolina. “Repurposing existing energy infrastructure and taking advantage of federal funding significantly offset costs for our customers while continuing to support rapid growth across the region.” Duke is setting up the li-ion-based BESS as a sort of “grid …

Samsung SDI shifts US focus from EVs to BESS solutions

Samsung SDI shifts US focus from EVs to BESS solutions

In what appears to be significant strategic pivot, Samsung SDI will begin supplying prismatic lithium iron phosphate (LFP) batteries for energy storage systems under a fresh US contract worth more than 2 trillion won (~$1.35 billion). The move will see the company shift US EV battery production lines to ESS output ahead of 2027. Michigan-based Samsung SDI America will begin manufacturing battery energy storage system (BESS) cells at the company’s Indiana facility, where the manufacturer has been shifting some its production lines from cell production for EVs to prismatic LFP cell production for BESS units – a move the company claims will allow it to more closely align with domestic market demands. “It is a significant opportunity for Samsung SDI to expand into the US ESS market with the first long-term contract for LFP supply,” said a Samsung official. “Through the first supply of SBB 2.0 for ESS installation in the US, Samsung SDI will start providing US customers with ESS batteries to meet their needs not only for high-performance but also for enhanced safety …
