Big John’s in Birmingham found to be employing illegal worker and paying them below minimum wage

An outlet of a popular Birmingham takeaway chain has been found to be employing an illegal worker following a raid by Government immigration officials. The Big John’s outlet in Bristol Road, Selly Oak, was visited by members of the Home Office’s ICE (immigration compliance and enforcement) team last June. Officers raided the venue on Thursday, June 19 at 1.30pm, and found four workers, one of whom was working illegally in the kitchen. He was said to be nervous when confronted and stuttered in his replies. He did, though, hand over his mobile phone, which had messages showing he worked well in excess of 20 hours a week, sometimes triple that. Labour set to lose ‘God-given right’ to govern England’s second city

Labour set to lose ‘God-given right’ to govern England’s second city

As pupils leave Thornton Primary School in Birmingham, they are greeted by Harris Khaliq, an independent candidate, offering what he calls “stickers for Palestine”. The children eagerly take the bright pink labels to adorn their jumpers and coats. Each bears the name of the contender for the Ward End district and the image of a Palestinian flag – a declaration of his support for the people of Gaza. He is one of around 40 pro-Palestinian independents standing for election to Birmingham city council in traditionally Labour wards with significant Muslim populations. Many are on course to win, making it all but certain the Labour Party will lose control of Britain’s second city for the first time in decades. Knocking on doors, Mr Khaliq and the other independents campaign on local issues: safer streets, more funding for youth centres, saving the library. But the war in Gaza is ever-present, and mainstream parties fear the issue signals a more sectarian Britain, where communities vote for candidates based on religious or ethnic loyalty. Mr Khaliq, 34, who works …

Labour MP made £30k from housing scheme denounced by his own party

A Labour MP made more than £30,000 from a taxpayer-funded housing scheme criticised by his party as a “lucrative money-spinning opportunity”. Gurinder Singh Josan, who is the MP for Smethwick, co-owns a five-bedroom house used to accommodate vulnerable people, including drug addicts, asylum seekers and the homeless. For six years, Birmingham city council paid £473,475 to organisations running the property, which housed more than 60 people. Mr Josan and his family received more than £30,000, with the rest going to companies managing the property, The Telegraph understands. The payments were made through the “exempt accommodation” system, which allows landlords to charge the taxpayer higher rents that are not subject to standard housing benefit caps. Gurinder Singh Josan MP with Sir Keir Starmer and Angela Rayner during the 2024 local elections in Dudley – Eddie Keogh/Getty The sector has faced sustained criticism for enabling landlords to profit from housing vulnerable people, often in poor-quality accommodation. In 2022, Shabana Mahmood, now the Home Secretary, criticised it as a “lucrative money-spinning opportunity” for landlords. After being approached by …

Birmingham’s divisive ‘rat tax’ charge set to rise once again

Birmingham’s divisive ‘rat tax’ charge set to rise once again

Birmingham City Council’s controversial pest control charge for rats is set to rise again under new proposals. After declaring itself effectively bankrupt in 2023, the Labour-run council introduced charges for ‘rat in garden and rat in house treatments’ – a service which was previously free. The charge, dubbed a ‘rat tax’ by critics, was hugely divisive and prompted councillor Sam Forsyth to dramatically quit the Labour Party last year. READ MORE: Full list of price rises for Birmingham residents as council services set for hike The charge rose from £24 to £26.40 in 2025 despite calls to axe it amid fears over the impact of the ongoing bins strike. The council’s rat treatments are temporarily free of charge in a bid to “prioritise public health” due to the ongoing industrial action by bin workers. But the authority is now planning to increase the charge once again, so residents would face forking out £27.60 – a rise of 4.55 per cent – when payments resume. The hike is part of a fresh wave of price rises …
