An outlet of a popular Birmingham takeaway chain has been found to be employing an illegal worker following a raid by Government immigration officials. The Big John’s outlet in Bristol Road, Selly Oak, was visited by members of the Home Office’s ICE (immigration compliance and enforcement) team last June. Officers raided the venue on Thursday, June 19 at 1.30pm, and found four workers, one of whom was working illegally in the kitchen. He was said to be nervous when confronted and stuttered in his replies. A serving detective for West Midlands Police tragically died from horror thermal burn injuries in the back of a parked car in Birmingham, an inquest found. The body of Det Con Tayyab Malik was discovered in a Volkswagen Polo on the driveway of his home on Yardley Wood Road, in Billesley, on February 24. The 35-year-old had doused himself with a flammable liquid and ignited it in the Billesley Common area, a Birmingham coroner found. The officer then made his way home and tried unsuccessfully to gain entry to the property before getting into his vehicle from the rear. Our school’s work on travel and sustainability was recently recognised when we were crowned Modeshift STARS national secondary school of the year. This followed local and regional awards last year. We’re a city school so most of our young people do not get to us by car. But we believe there is always more we can do to encourage sustainable travel among children and young people, families and staff. ALEXANDRIA, Va. (RNS) — Within a red binder, each of its typewritten pages encased in plastic sleeves, sits an early draft of the famous letter written by the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. as he was held in a jail in Birmingham, Alabama. Ten pages that once were considered for the 1963 “Letter from Birmingham Jail” were discovered in March by a graduate student concluding an internship by examining papers donated to the African American Episcopal Historical Collection, a joint venture of the Virginia Theological Seminary and the Historical Society of the Episcopal Church. The draft was found in the papers of Bishop John M. Burgess, the first African American to serve as an Episcopal diocesan bishop, and his wife, Esther. The papers, donated by the daughters of the couple that was active in the Civil Rights Movement, are housed at the seminary near Washington, D.C. “I screamed, but I also wept,” said Riley Temple, the collection’s growth specialist, of seeing the letter, with its yellowed pages, for the first time. These are the mugshots of a “skilled” gang who were caught stealing £50,000 worth of underground cables in Birmingham – knocking out communications for thousands of residents in the process. Firearm officers and a dog handler were patrolling nearby when they were alerted to a group of men below a manhole cover in Great Charles Queensway on January 20. In dramatic footage shared by West Midlands Police, one officer warned the Romanian gang of thieves to “come out” or “the dog’s coming in”.
