Donald Trump has shown no sign of approving a peace deal with Iran despite saying on Friday that he would make a ‘final determination’, ITV News Correspondent Sejal Karia explains. The US military stopped a merchant vessel trying to break through its blockade of Iranian ports by firing a missile into its engine room. The Gambia-flagged cargo ship Lian Star ignored more than 20 warnings from American forces overnight as it tried to enter an Iranian port, the US Central Command said. The ship remained adrift in the Gulf of Oman and US forces have not boarded it, a US official with knowledge of the situation said. It means the US has now stopped six ships trying to breach the blockade, imposed on April 17. One has been allowed to proceed and another 116 ships have been redirected, the military has said. Eid al-Adha, one of the most important dates in the Islamic calendar, comes at a critical time for Iranians this year. Meat from sacrificed animals is often eaten at Iranian tables, but a blockade on Iranian ports and sanctions by the US has led to escalating costs across the country. Unlike Nowruz, the Persian New Year, Eid al-Adha is not as widely celebrated in Iran, but mosques and other institutions still observe the ritual of animal sacrifice, known as qurbani, through authorised livestock and slaughter centres. Here, animals are sacrificed according to Islamic law in a hygienic environment. But another goal of the network is to control runaway inflation by offering meat at lower prices than market rates. Meat substitutes A Tehran municipality body announced on Tuesday that each kilogramme of sacrificial meat would be sold at 7.4 million rials ($4.30) at designated shops. The conflict in the Middle East provided a painfully awkward backdrop to this week’s meetings between President Trump and China’s leader, Xi Jinping. Mr. Trump, waging war on Iran, is also trying to cut off Iran’s income from oil exports. China is by far the world’s biggest customer for that oil. Mr. Trump’s Treasury secretary, Scott Bessent, has accused China of effectively financing terrorism by purchasing Iranian oil. So last month, the U.S. Navy deployed a vast sea blockade, starting in the Gulf of Oman, giving it the power to decide which ships get through to China and other destinations in Asia. U.S. officials say the blockade has been very effective, having intercepted more than 70 vessels. Ships have been stopped off Iran’s coast and even far beyond. One China-bound ship carrying Iranian oil, the Majestic X, was recently seized in the Indian Ocean, more than 2,000 miles from the Gulf of Oman.
