What happened to the Italian divers inside Maldives’ underwater caves? Experts probe mystery as bodies located

The bodies of four ‌missing Italian scuba ‌divers ‌who died last week while exploring underwater caves have now been located, the Maldives government said. A group of five Italian divers died while attempting to explore caves at a depth of 50m (164ft) in the Vaavu Atoll on Thursday, Italy’s foreign ministry said. The body of one of the divers was recovered from the opening of the cave on the same day. On Monday, a team of three Finnish divers arrived to plan a fresh search for the bodies of the divers, Divers Alert Network Europe said. Earlier, a high-risk operation to recover the bodies had to be suspended following the death of a Maldivian diver from decompression sickness. Mohamed Mahudhee, a member of the Maldivian National Defence Force, died of underwater decompression sickness after being transferred to a hospital in the capital on Saturday, Maldives presidential spokesperson, Mohamed Hussain Shareef, said. Mr Shareef said three Finnish divers, experts in deep and cave diving, arrived in the archipelago nation and joined the Maldives coastguard in a …

KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia said on Monday (May 18) it had ended a search for passengers of a migrant boat from Indonesia that sank off the country’s western coast last week after the bodies of all 16 missing were recovered. The Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency (MMEA) in Perak state said 23 people were rescued after the vessel sank off Pangkor island west of peninsular Malaysia on May 11. Perak MMEA director Mohamad Shukri Khotob told AFP that the search was called off on Saturday. “It’s the standard (procedure) for us to carry out search and rescue mission for six days. We ended the search at 7pm on Saturday after there were no new discoveries in the area,” Mohamad Shukri said by telephone on Monday. He said all 23 survivors were Indonesian but he was unsure if the 16 dead were all their compatriots. The migrants were trying to reach several destinations in Malaysia, including Penang, Terengganu, Selangor and Kuala Lumpur for work. Mohamad Shukri said initial information from survivors that there were 37 people on board …

What does stress really do to our bodies – and when does it become a big problem? | Life and style

What does stress really do to our bodies – and when does it become a big problem? | Life and style

You wake up later than planned, so it’s a rush to get everything sorted out ahead of the school run. While you’re waiting for the toaster, idiotically, you check your phone. Something has happened, and your timeline is a scalding-hot mess of the worst takes imaginable. One of your children has left their shoes somewhere unfathomable, and there’s an envelope on your doormat scolding you for driving in a bus lane. You’re undeniably stressed, and your body’s likely to respond by ramping up the same biological systems that evolved to deal with inter-tribe disputes and mammoth attacks. But is there a downside to being stressed – and having these systems switched on – all the time? Take a calming breath, and let’s dig into the science. “The most immediate effect we see in a stressful situation is a surge of adrenaline causing an increase in heart rate, blood pressure and breathing,” says Prof Kavita Vedhara, a specialist in stress and behavioural medicine at Cardiff University. “This is your fight-or-flight response, and it’s designed to prepare …

Russia launches nearly 300 drones at Ukraine as 528 bodies of Ukrainian soldiers are returned

At least one person was killed in an overnight Russian attack across Ukraine, a day after the warring countries exchanged 205 prisoners of war each, and as the bodies of 528 Ukrainian soldiers were returned. Ukraine’s Air Force said 294 drones were launched by Russia overnight, adding that 269 of them were shot down. It said direct hits were recorded by 20 drones at 15 locations. In Kherson, five high-rise residential buildings and 19 houses were damaged in the strikes, killing one and injuring 23 more people, according to regional Governor Oleksandr Prokudin. In Ukraine’s Odesa, Kharkiv and Sumy regions, more critical and civilian infrastructure was targeted by Russian strikes overnight. Related 39 settlements were left without power across Odesa after the region’s power infrastructure was damaged, affecting more than 22,000 consumers. In Kharkiv, key transport infrastructure was damaged, including a road, two metro stations, the electric transport contact network, a trolleybus, and a public transport stop. Seven people were injured in Sumy after an office building, an ambulance, minibuses and cars were hit. Meanwhile, …

The Download: deepfake porn’s stolen bodies and AI sharing private numbers

This is today’s edition of The Download, our weekday newsletter that provides a daily dose of what’s going on in the world of technology. The shock of seeing your body used in deepfake porn When Jennifer got a research job in 2023, she ran her new professional headshot through a facial recognition program. She wanted to see whether it would pull up the porn videos she’d made more than a decade earlier. It did, but it also surfaced something she’d never seen before: one of her old videos, now featuring someone else’s face on her body. Conversations about sexualized deepfakes usually focus on the people whose faces are inserted into explicit content without consent. But another group often gets ignored: the people whose bodies those faces are attached to. Adult content creators say AI systems are training on their work, cloning their likenesses, and generating explicit content they never agreed to make, all with little legal protection or control.  Read the full story on the threat to their rights, livelihoods, and ownership of their own …

Should We Be Talking About Celebrities’ Bodies?

Should We Be Talking About Celebrities’ Bodies?

It’s strict over at Cannes! The film festival is known for its famous dress code: black-tie only for red-carpet gala screenings, meaning evening gowns for women and tuxedos for men. Last year, the conversation was all about how Cannes introduced bans on both “naked dresses,” which we can probably thank Bella Hadid for after she wore a suggestion of a sheath by Saint Laurent on the red carpet back in 2024, and overly voluminous gowns for simple logistics: There are a lot of steps! This year, the ban on naked dresses and too-big frocks remains, and attendees are now asked to wear “elegant shoes” rather than heels. Yet dress codes are not the topic du jour. The talk surrounding red carpets this year is a far thornier one: the state of celebrity bodies. Namely, everyone’s too thin. This isn’t news—the big, ongoing GLP-1 wave hit Hollywood early—but, if at first the chatter was about who was taking “the stab” and who wasn’t, nowadays it’s about the size of everyone’s waist and how visible their sternums …

Media watchdog Reporters Without Borders (RSF) has condemned Niger’s suspension of nine French media publications as the military government continues to crack down on journalists. Niger announced the suspension on Friday, citing “repeated dissemination of content likely to seriously jeopardise public order, national unity, social cohesion, and the stability of the institutions of the Republic”. How Celebrities Get Their Bodies Met-Gala Ready, According to Their Trainers

How Celebrities Get Their Bodies Met-Gala Ready, According to Their Trainers

In terms of what that looks like, while all the trainers I spoke with unanimously viewed nutrition as the most important thing to focus on in the days leading up to a big event, none mentioned keeping track of calories or even really cutting carbs. Given that we’re talking about a red carpet, and not a shirtless movie scene, they’re far more concerned about food’s potential to influence things like inflammation, gut health, and sleep—all of which can influence how their clients will look and feel on the red carpet. They prioritize whole foods One of the most commonly deployed nutrition tactics to reduce inflammation—and, crucially, face puffiness—in the days leading up to the red carpet is to cut down on sodium and increase hydration, says Walsh, who is also the co-founder of plant-based protein brand Rise311. “Sodium is a good thing when you’re training, but it can work against you on the red carpet,” he says. “It’s going to make you retain more water, especially under the eyes. So, as we get closer to …
