Kena Betancur | AFP | Getty Images Airline, hotel and other industry groups are urging the White House and top Trump administration officials to abandon a proposal that would cut off immigration processing at major airports, including Newark Liberty International Airport in New Jersey, a United Airlines hub. United CEO Scott Kirby was set to discuss the proposal with Homeland Security Secretary Markwayne Mullin to convey the disruptions the policies could cause to travelers, according to two people familiar with the previously unreported call who spoke on condition of anonymity to talk about a private conversation. Airlines for America, a trade association whose members include American Airlines, United Airlines and Delta Air Lines told White House officials this week that reducing Customs and Border Protection service at Newark, New Jersey’s airport would “create havoc” for U.S. citizens, which make up the bulk of the 20,000 passengers flying in internationally to the airport, according to a document that was seen …

Charly Triballeau | Afp | Getty Images Groups representing the largest U.S. airlines and hotel chains slammed the Trump administration’s potential halt of customs and immigration processing at “sanctuary city” airports, warning such a move could have “devastating” consequences on the industry. Homeland Security Secretary Markwayne Mullin said in an interview on Fox News’ “Hannity” on Tuesday night that if “radical left Democrats” aren’t allowing the government to “enforce federal laws … we shouldn’t be processing international flights into their cities either.” The secretary’s comments came just ahead of the FIFA World Cup next month that is expected to bring millions of visitors to host cities in the U.S., Canada and Mexico, drawing alarm from the travel industry. Mullin said the Trump administration is “drawing up plans” but isn’t putting anything into place yet. The timing of the idea being floated raises questions about whether the administration is using its leverage to try to persuade cities whose immigration policies …

U.S., EU lawmakers pledge European scrutiny of Paramount’s WBD deal

Anna Moneymaker | Getty Images A group of U.S. and European lawmakers told Paramount Skydance CEO David Ellison that the company’s proposed acquisition of Warner Bros. Discovery will be subject to careful scrutiny by European regulators and that he should not consider shareholder approval of the deal to be the final word. The three European Parliament members and two Democratic U.S. House lawmakers issued their warning in a letter sent Thursday and shared exclusively with CNBC. “In the European Union, the European Commission and the European Parliament will closely examine market definition, market share threshold, customer substitutability, vertical integration effects, and downstream impacts in the Internal Market pursuant to the EU Merger Regulation,” they wrote. The lawmakers noted that despite a preliminary WBD shareholder vote approving the merger last month, it is still subject to …

Trump, Congressional Republicans float gas tax holiday amid Iran war

Brian Kaiser | Bloomberg | Getty Images President Donald Trump and congressional Republicans are proposing suspending the federal gas tax as prices at the pump continue to soar ahead of the 2026 midterm elections. Gasoline and oil prices have jumped since the U.S.-Israeli war with Iran broke out more than two months ago. Iran has largely brought the Strait of Hormuz, which normally carries a fifth of the world’s oil, to a standstill since the first strikes began. Trump said in the Oval Office on Monday that he would “reduce” the tax, shortly after saying in an interview with CBS News that he wants to pause the tax “for a period of time.” “I think it’s a great idea,” he said in the CBS interview. “Yup, we’re going to take off the gas tax for a period of time, and when gas goes down, we’ll let it phase back in.” …

Congress, retailers want to rebuild national parks. Road tolls might pay

Danny Lehman | The Image Bank | Getty Images Congress is trying to come up with more money to give the aging national parks a facelift in honor of the country’s 250th birthday this year. President Donald Trump talks about the importance of federal facilities looking good, while his budget proposal slashed funding for the National Park Service. Republican lawmakers are searching for revenue sources including establishing tolls on federally operated roads in the Washington area used daily by tens of thousands of commuters and by hiking fees to visit national parks for visitors from outside the U.S. Democrats say putting tolls on roads that intersect with the Capital Beltway is an untenable solution and that finding new money to fund park overhauls is not necessary since it’s already the government’s responsibility to maintain the parks. Lawmakers are racing to pass the successor to the Great American Outdoors Act, or GAOA, a law Trump signed during his first term to clear the National Park Service‘s backlog …

Boeing CEO Kelly Ortberg set to join Trump on China visit next week

Boeing CEO Kelly Ortberg set to join Trump on China visit next week

Boeing CEO Kelly Ortberg is expected to join President Donald Trump on his visit to China next week, a source familiar with the planemaker’s plans told CNBC on Thursday. Trump is currently set to meet with Chinese President Xi Jinping in Beijing on May 14 and 15. Ortberg signaled in an earnings call late last month that China could soon place an order for a “big number” of Boeing planes, breaking a yearslong drought for the company. But any new deal with China is “100% dependent” on U.S.-Chinese relations, including the outcome of the Trump-Xi summit, Ortberg said. While Boeing has recently resumed deliveries of some aircraft to China in the years following a pause after two crashes of the company’s 737 Max 8 jets in 2018 and 2019, it’s been almost a decade since Chinese airlines made a big order with Boeing. Those airlines have, however, purchased from Boeing’s main rival, Airbus. China Southern Airlines agreed to buy 137 Airbus A320 aircraft valued at $21.4 billion at list prices, according to a post on …

FDA announces first approval of fruit-flavored e-cigarettes for adults

Flavored disposable e-cigarettes are seen in this illustration taken July 18, 2022. Shannon Stapleton | Reuters The Food and Drug Administration on Tuesday announced its first authorization of fruit-flavored electronic cigarettes intended for adult smokers, a major policy shift that comes after months of appeals to President Donald Trump from the vaping industry. The decision is certain to be opposed by health groups and parent organizations that have long pointed to flavors as the driver behind underage vaping in the U.S. But the federal action comes as teen vaping rates have dropped to a 10-year low and manufacturers have pushed the Republican administration to loosen restrictions on their products. Vaping companies have long made the case that their products can help blunt the toll of smoking among adults, which is blamed for 480,000 U.S. deaths annually due to cancer, lung disease and heart disease. The battery-powered devices have been sold in the U.S. since 2007, but their potential benefits have been overshadowed for years by uptake among middle and high school students. The newly authorized …

No need for government budget airline bailout

No need for government budget airline bailout

Blue | Bloomberg | Getty Images U.S. Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy said on Saturday he does not think the government needs to bail out low-cost airlines that have sought $2.5 billion in government relief because of high jet fuel prices, following the collapse of Spirit Airlines. “At this point, I don’t think it’s necessary. They do have access to cash. If they want to come to the U.S. government, we would be a lender of last resort. If they can find dollars in the private markets — I think that’s better for them,” Duffy said at a press conference at Newark Liberty International Airport in New Jersey. He said the prospect of a Spirit bailout was seen by some other airlines as an opportunity to get money “not necessarily based on need, but based on opportunity.” On Monday, a group of U.S. budget airlines, …

Trump White House ballroom won’t get WHCD buy-in, critics say

A member of the media raises her hand for a question as U.S. President Donald Trump talks while holding up renderings of the planned White House ballroom, aboard Air Force One en route to Joint Base Andrews, Maryland, U.S., March 29, 2026. Elizabeth Frantz | Reuters President Donald Trump, top officials in his administration and many MAGA figures are strongly pushing for a White House ballroom to be built, citing a shooting incident just outside the White House Correspondents’ Association dinner that led to his evacuation from the event at the Washington Hilton on Saturday night. Trump and his backers say building the controversial and legally challenged $400 million grand ballroom that he envisions is essential to keeping him — and future presidents — safe from assassination attacks and other security threats. But critics argue that a ballroom at the White House would not be accepted as a substitute for a private venue for non-governmental events and that presidents would undoubtedly travel around the country and world, appearing in public at many venues. Despite that …

Scenes from the White House Correspondents’ Dinner shooting

President Donald Trump and other top U.S. officials were evacuated from an annual White House Correspondents’ Dinner in Washington, D.C., on Saturday after shots rang out soon after the start of the dinner. At least five shots were heard at the event in the Washington Hilton hotel around 8:35 p.m. ET. Trump, who was seated on stage at the front of the ballroom next to first lady Melania, was quickly surrounded by U.S. Secret Service agents, while hundreds of attendees ducked under their tables for cover. It appeared that no one was seriously injured. The gunman was taken into custody. Here are some of the chaotic scenes that occurred in the aftermath of the shooting.
