Those who have watched the rise of both shows, however, might see more parallels than that between the two. Both Heated Rivalry and Off Campus are romances that started off under the radar before becoming instant sensations, catapulting their stars to a new level of celebrity. Conor Oberst was still a boyish 24-year-old from Omaha when he dropped the pair of albums that took his band Bright Eyes from indie-rock celebrity to voice-of-a-generation prestige. Released on the same day in January 2005, “I’m Wide Awake, It’s Morning” and “Digital Ash in a Digital Urn” pondered love, war, drugs and technology against the backdrop of Oberst’s recent move to New York — and did it in songs that put frayed-edge folk (on “Wide Awake”) next to sleek electronic pop (on “Digital Ash”). Two decades later, hints of gray streaked the singer-songwriter’s hair as he sat at a picnic table in Lake Hollywood Park on a mid-April afternoon. Ella Bright had all but prepared herself for a normal college experience. After spending her adolescence on the British children’s series Malory Towers, the London teen found herself at a crossroads. Should she keep acting or take some time to focus on passing her A-level exams and the prospect of college? Bright decided she’d go on a few auditions before taking her break, with a new Prime Video romance series, Off Campus, being the last. The then-18-year-old was reading for the lead character, college music student Hannah Wells. She never managed to take that break. “I did the audition, I got the part in this whirlwind month process,” Bright tells The Hollywood Reporter on a Zoom ahead of the show’s premiere. “It was like, OK, we only got two A-levels [done], and I’m not going to college anymore. Remarkably Bright Creatures has officially dropped on Netflix, an adaptation of the 2022 book of the same name by Shelby Van Pelt. Netflix has gone and done the seemingly impossible, and adapted Remarkably Bright Creatures for the screen. Shelby Van Pelt’s novel became a bestseller upon its release in 2022, telling the story of a lonely widow who befriends an octopus in the aquarium where she works. As the story unfolds, she and the octopus, named Marcellus, team up to solve the mystery of her son’s murder, with certain passages even told from the marine creature’s perspective. Because of its unique premise, bringing the story to life in film was always going to be a difficult task, but on Friday morning, Netflix unveiled its new movie version of the hit book, starring two-time Oscar winner Sally Field alongside Lewis Pullman and the voice of Alfred Molina as Marcellus. The question is… how did they do?
