Brits from hantavirus ship prepare to fly back to UK – 20 to return | UK | News

A British repatriation flight carrying passengers from the virus-hit cruise ship has taken off from Tenerife South Airport and is now en route to the UK, as a major international evacuation operation continues under strict health controls. The aircraft, carrying 20 British nationals, departed slightly behind schedule on Sunday and is understood to have flown over the quarantined MV Hondius during its return journey, Sky News reports. The vessel has been at the centre of a major outbreak response involving the rare Hantavirus. Passengers on board are being transported under strict infection control measures. Once the flight lands in the UK, the group will be transferred to Arrowe Park Hospital, a designated managed clinical facility. The site, previously used during the early stages of the COVID-19 pandemic, will host passengers for initial medical assessment and testing. According to official plans, the travellers will remain at the facility for 72 hours under observation before being instructed to complete a further 45-day isolation period as a precautionary measure. Throughout Sunday, a coordinated multinational evacuation effort has seen …

4 UK travel firms plunge into liquidation or cease trading – all bookings cancelled | UK | News

4 UK travel firms have plunged into administration or ceased trading in 2026 (Image: Getty) Four travel firms have ceased trading in 2026 and cancelled all bookings. With jet fuel prices soaring following the Iran crisis and international travel hit with uncertainty thanks to travel warnings, there could yet be more companies pushed to breaking point. When holiday businesses do collapse, bookings are cancelled and holidaymakers lose their trip and their money, unless their firm was covered by ATOL protection. In January, Regen Central Ltd went into liquidation and cancelled all trips without refunds. The firm, which was founded in Hertfordshire in 2011 before moving to London, lost its ATOL protection on January 13. The Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) said Regen Central had no outstanding ATOL protect bookings, and that those sold as accommodation only, non flight or flight only bookings are not protected by ATOL. Desperate hunt launched for Brit who vanished on holiday | UK | News

The family of a missing British man who disappeared after leaving his holiday home in Spain have appealed for him to get in touch as concerns grow for his safety. Paul Daniel Strange, 70, vanished on Thursday the same day he was due to start the long drive back in his van from the fishing and tourist town of Palomares in Almeria to Essex where he lives. The retired builder and locksmith, from Leigh-on-Sea, had been staying at a friend’s apartment. And today his worried loved ones revealed police had begun a search for the pensioner as the mystery of his whereabouts deepened and they said a neighbour had seen him leaving the property – but a friend who then let himself in after Paul went missing found belongings of his including a computer and clothes inside. Father-of-three Mr Strange’s son, also called Paul, said: “We’re obviously extremely worried and have already contacted police in Essex who have been in touch with Interpol and as we understand it, spoken to Spanish police so they can …

Foreign Office warning over new rule in Spain and 28 other countries | World | News

A passenger checks her passport (Image: Getty) British tourists travelling to popular destinations such as Spain, Greece, France and Italy are being warned about a new rule that will soon apply across much of Europe. The introduction of the European Travel Information and Authorisation System (ETIAS), a digital travel permit that visitors from visa-exempt countries – including the UK – will need to obtain before entering a host of European destinations. Under the system, travellers will have to complete an online application before their trip and receive authorisation to enter participating countries for short stays. The permit will allow visits of up to 90 days within any 180-day period. The EU expects ETIAS to begin operating in late 2026, although the exact launch date has not yet been confirmed. The new permit will work alongside Europe’s Entry/Exit System (EES), another digital border scheme that will replace passport stamping with biometric checks such as facial scans and fingerprints for non-EU travellers. The Foreign Office said on its website: “EES is designed to improve border security within …

Qatar Airways issues major update on flights amid Iran war | World | News

Qatar Airways have issued an update over his flights as the war in Iran continues to rage. Thousands of British holidaymakers have been left stuck after flight cancellations as escalating hostilities in Iran and across the Middle East disrupt air travel. Closures of airspace over large parts of the region have now continued into their fifth day following US-Israeli strikes on Iran. Amid the ongoing airspace the three major Gulf carrier – Emirates, Etihad, Qatar Airways – are taking different approaches to restarting operations. In an update this morning Qatar Airways announced that flights will remain grounded until at least Friday. The suspension affects both departures and arrivals — the airline says it will resume services only once authorities deem the airspace safe. The long haul carrier added that a further update will be provided on Friday March 6 at 9am with passengers being urged to keep an eye on the latest flight information. *** Ensure our latest news headlines always appear at the top of your Google Search by making us a Preferred Source. …

Cyprus and Dubai have been targeted by Iran strikes (Image: Getty) Britain’s defence secretary has confirmed that two missiles from Iran were fired in the direction of Cyprus this morning, where military bases are located. John Healey said “we are pretty sure they [Iran’s missiles] weren’t targeted at our bases”, but he added that “it shows how indiscriminate” the Iranian retaliation is. With the threats heading towards Europe, the Express has analysed five holiday destinations loved by Brits that would be in range of Iran’s missiles. According to Missile Threat CSIS, which analyses ballistic and cruise missiles around the globe, Iran possesses the “largest and most diverse missile arsenal in the Middle East”. It said the country has thousands of ballistic and cruise missiles, some capable of striking as far as Israel and southeast Europe. Brits held for 400 days in Iranian jail subjected to mock executions and starvation | World | News

Brits held for 400 days in Iranian jail subjected to mock executions and starvation | World | News

A British couple have endured more than 400 days of appalling conditions in an Iranian prison, with their son warning MPs that Lindsay and Craig Foreman are suffering from starvation, chronic medical neglect, and psychological torment. The couple, from East Sussex, were detained in January 2025 while on a world motorcycle tour and subsequently charged with espionage—a claim they deny. They remain imprisoned at Tehran’s notorious Evin facility, infamous for overcrowding and harsh treatment of detainees. Ms Foreman described the ordeal to ITV News from the prison as “psychological torture.”  She said: “I naively and ignorantly believed we would be safe,” citing their careful planning, including visas, an Iranian travel agent, and a tour guide.  She added: “We kind of felt… there’s a risk of detainment, but how bad can that be? If we’re innocent people, why would they detain us?” However, the reality has been starkly different. Joe Bennett, their son, told MP on Wednesday that his parents have been forced to sleep on concrete floors or metal bunks without mattresses and have lived …

Panic as great white shark ‘breeding again’ in sea teeming with British tourists | World | News

Panic as great white shark ‘breeding again’ in sea teeming with British tourists | World | News

Great white sharks may be breeding again in the Mediterranean, scientists believe, in an announcement likely to spook British tourists who flock there every summer. The revelation comes after a juvenile shark, measuring around 210cm and weighing 80–90kg, was accidentally caught off Spain’s eastern coast on April 20, 2023. The rare find prompted researchers to examine historical records from 1862 to 2023, with their results recently published in the open-access journal Acta Ichthyologica et Piscatoria. Once made infamous by Steven Spielberg’s Jaws, the species was thought to have vanished from the Mediterranean, apart from occasional visitors from other seas. Despite their fearsome reputation, Great Whites are often unfairly maligned, suffering from a “villain” narrative that does not match reality. While headlines often lean into sensationalism, the statistical likelihood of a shark encounter is extraordinarily low. In fact, you are significantly more likely to be struck by lightning or injured by a household appliance than to be bitten by a shark. Worldwide, unprovoked attacks have hit historic lows—with only 47 recorded globally in 2024—and in the …

Cruise ship carrying British tourists circling Barbados after Trump’s Venezuela operation | World | News

A cruise ship carrying British tourists is circling Barbados “in limbo” after Donald Trump invaded Venezuela. Holidaymakers onboard the P&O cruise Arvia set sail from Barbados on January 2, 2025, and were due to dock at Martinique today before heading to St Kitts, British Virgin Islands, and more destinations. But due to military action in Venezuela, passengers on the cruise claim they haven’t got more than 30 miles from shore and have returned to Barbados THREE times already – including today (6) – to pick up passengers whose flights were cancelled or delayed. Lizzy Meadowcroft, 56, and her partner Mark Crowther, from Morecambe, Lancashire, said that the ship is currently docked in Barbados for the third time, where it will remain until 7pm local time this evening before heading to St Lucia. Many passengers who were due to be on the cruise did not make it after aircraft were instructed to avoid parts of the Caribbean by the US Federal Aviation Administration in the wake of the military action. Lizzy said: “We are disappointed as …
