How network planning could provide a £2.58 billion boost – POLITICO

How network planning could provide a £2.58 billion boost – POLITICO

Though much of this early progress has been made possible without breaking new ground or installing significant new hardware, the next phase of the plan will challenge us more. This is predominantly due to the planning permission we require to get started. Despite 96% of our planned sites involve upgrading existing infrastructure rather than building new masts, more than half will require planning permission under current rules. The cost of planning processes can be significant. They can place added pressure on local council resources, slow businesses’ access to new technology and may delay improved connectivity for rural communities. Analysis by WPI Economics estimates that network planning delays could represent a £2.58bn missed opportunity for the UK economy by 2035. The only way to help deliver better connectivity is to work together to modernise a planning system for the era of 5G connectivity. After all, 5G is a very different technology to 4G and, despite physical hardware moving on vastly since the last generation making it more energy efficient, compact and less visually obtrusive, we are …

Russia batters Kyiv with massive missile and drone attack – POLITICO

Russia’s military pummeled Kyiv overnight with large-scale drone and missile attack that killed at least two people and injured scores of others, Ukrainian officials said on Sunday. Moscow’s forces used some 600 drones and 30 missiles, including at least one Oreshnik, a powerful hypersonic ballistic missile that is capable of carrying nuclear weapons, Ukraine’s air force said. “The largest number of missiles was directed at the capital — at ordinary residential buildings, at schools,” Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said in a post on X. “The Russian strike effectively destroyed the Chornobyl Museum, damaged the National Art Museum and the building housing the office of Germany’s ARD,” Zelenskyy said. Ukrainian intelligence services had warned of an attack using Oreshnik missiles on Friday, Zelenskyy said in another post. “The use of such weapons … also sets a global precedent for other potential aggressors,” he warned. The attack on Kyiv came after Russian President Vladimir Putin accused Ukraine of carrying out an attack on student dormitory in Luhansk, in occupied eastern Ukraine, in which 18 people died. US strengthens Greenland presence with new consulate – POLITICO

During his second presidency, the American leader has repeatedly floated the idea of annexing Greenland, without excluding the use of military force. Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen responded in January that taking Greenland would end NATO. In December last year, Trump appointed U.S. Governor Jeff Landry as special envoy to Greenland, sparking strong condemnations from both Denmark and the European Commission after Landry suggested his role was “to make Greenland a part of the U.S.” Although Trump has since walked back claims of annexing the island, his administration is trying to increase its influence. Former NATO chief Anders Fogh Rasmussen told POLITICO at the GLOBSEC Forum on Thursday that the United States and Denmark were working to increase US military presence on Greenland through “a more classical diplomatic path.” “We would welcome that,” Rasmussen said, referring to the military expansion. This week, Landry visited Greenland alongside U.S. Ambassador to Denmark Ken Howery, meeting with the island’s top officials. Howery will inaugurate the new consulate alongside the U.S. Consul in Nuuk, Susan Wilson, according to local …

Pope Leo to visit France in September – POLITICO

His trip to France, as well as a previously announced June visit to Spain, showcases the Vatican leader’s interest in building ties with secular Catholic countries in Europe. It will be the first papal visit to France in 18 years. French President Emmanuel Macron welcomed the news Saturday, sharing on social media that “we are delighted that His Holiness Pope Leo XIV has confirmed his trip to France. This visit next September will be an honor for our country, a joy for Catholics, and a great moment of hope for everyone.” Macron visited the Vatican in April, where he extended once more the invitation from the president of the French Bishops’ Conference (CEF), Cardinal Jean-Marc Aveline. “It’s a great joy, but also a great responsibility,” said Aveline on Saturday. The pontiff will also travel to Lourdes, a renowned Catholic pilgrimage site in southwest France. Pope Leo is also scheduled to visit Spain in June, when he will meet Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez in Madrid and also travel to Barcelona and the Canary Islands. Source …

POLL: Should foreign flags be banned from flying over public buildings? | Politics | News

Nigel Farage has reignited a fierce political row after vowing to ban foreign flags from flying above public buildings if Reform UK takes power. Now Express.co.uk readers are now being asked whether councils and other public bodies should only be allowed to fly British flags — or whether foreign flags should remain as symbols of solidarity and international support. The debate intensified after Reform councillors in Essex removed the Ukrainian flag from County Council headquarters, prompting criticism from James Cleverly. The former Home Secretary wrote on X: “One of the first decisions made by Essex Reform was to remove the Ukrainian flag from County Council HQ. Let that sink in.” Should foreign flags be banned from flying over public buildings? Vote in our poll and join the debate in the comments. Mr Farage hit back by declaring: “Under Reform there will be no foreign flags flown above our public buildings.” Reform has already introduced flag restrictions in councils it controls, limiting displays to the Union Jack, the St George’s Cross and county flags. Party chairman …

The Real-Life Diet of Lewis Tan From ‘Mortal Kombat II’, Who Used to Jump Off Buildings at School Talent Shows

With your background in martial arts and stunts, are they coming to you on set like, Lewis, we need your expertise on this stuff? The stunt people and the fight choreographers, 90% of the time, I know them, or I know of them, or we have some sort of connection through different martial artists. There is a collaborative process, but also those guys are really talented. They’ll pitch an idea of what they want to do with it, I’ll pitch some other ideas, and we kind of collaborate and make it something that everybody loves. If there are certain moves that I really want to put in—and if there are certain things that I really feel like I could do better this way—then it’s a collaborative process for sure. My thing is, we’re always trying to up the ante. For Mortal Kombat II, we up the ante so much higher than the first movie. I really, really, really truly mean that. The action team was given a lot more creative control. That really helped us …

Zelenskyy’s former chief of staff charged with corruption – POLITICO

Zelenskyy’s former chief of staff charged with corruption – POLITICO

Both were also charged with corruption but denied the allegations last year. Amid the same snowballing corruption probe, Zelenskyy fired Yermak, his long-time close associate and top foreign policy negotiator, last November on the same day NABU searched Yermak’s office. Zelenskyy thanked Yermak for his work, but said he had to let him go as he wanted “to avoid any speculations.” According to NABU, the members of the alleged crime group laundered state funds, including from Energoatom, through luxury real estate investments. Yermak did not immediately respond to a request for a comment. Speaking to journalists in Kyiv on Monday he said: “When the investigation is over, I will give comments. I have no mansions, I have only a flat and a car that you see.” Zelenskyy has remained silent on the alleged involvement of some of his closest associates in the corruption case. Last summer, as NABU was preparing to announce its first charges, the Ukrainian parliament abruptly voted to strip NABU and the Special Anti-Corruption Prosecutor’s office of their independence, with Zelenskyy signing …
