Brussels watchdog moves to ban Alternative for Germany’s EU party – POLITICO

Brussels watchdog moves to ban Alternative for Germany’s EU party – POLITICO

The ESN political group doesn’t face sanctions, and the only effect that AfD MEPs would feel would be the lack of a political party to provide support in future EU elections or to coordinate policy with like-minded factions. The ESN party and ESN group were founded by Alternative for Germany in the wake of the 2024 EU election, and include Bulgaria’s Revival, France’s Reconquest (led by Éric Zemmour), Poland’s Confederation, Czechia’s SPD, Hungary’s Our Homeland Movement, the Netherlands’ Forum for Democracy, and Slovakia’s Republic Movement. In 2026 it is slated to receive over €2 million in subsidies from the European Parliament. The watchdog — the Authority for European Political Parties and Foundations — said it had found evidence that “cast doubt on the compliance” of the ESN party with EU values, the director of the authority, Pascal Schonard, wrote in a letter. The missive was addressed to the Council of the EU — comprising representatives of national governments — and was seen by POLITICO on Wednesday. The watchdog’s process was launched on Friday. The watchdog monitors whether …

SOFIA, May 17 (Reuters) – Bulgarians celebrated on Sunday their country’s surprise first win in the Eurovision Song Contest as they welcomed home Dara, who triumphed with her catchy, crowd-pleasing, optimistic dance track “Bangaranga”. “This victory means a great deal to me,” ‌Dara said as she arrived on ‌Sunday evening at Sofia airport, where cheering crowds of fans including children greeted her with flowers, waving Bulgarian flags and chanting “Dara” and “Bangaranga”. “Everything is possible,” the 27-year-old said, addressing younger fans. “The fact that you are from a small country means nothing, because we can, with our hard work, with our dreams, with our daily efforts, turn the entire world upside down.” Eurovision fans had gathered in Sofia on Saturday night to watch coverage of this year’s contest, which was held in Vienna and was overshadowed by a five-country boycott over the Gaza war. Prime Minister Rumen Radev took to Facebook to congratulate Dara. Bulgaria was awaiting Europe and the world as the expected host of the 71st Eurovision Song Contest next year, he said.  …

Eurovision faces tough questions over country participation – POLITICO

Eurovision faces tough questions over country participation – POLITICO

Extra pressure The prospect of more country boycotts next year over Israel’s participation piles extra pressure on the EBU to be more consistent and clear in how it applies its own rules.   During the final week in Vienna, Eurovision officials became increasingly terse when fielding questions about Israel being allowed to participate, and whether it reflected a double standard given that Russia was banned from the contest in 2022 after it invaded Ukraine. A top EBU official explained the reasoning to POLITICO, that as long as national broadcasters follow EBU rules — like being sufficiently independent from the government — they should be allowed to compete. The official said Israel’s KAN is independent enough, while Russia’s RTR, Channel One and RDO are not.   That wasn’t the reasoning outlined in 2022, when Russia’s public broadcaster was expelled from the EBU and as a consequence banned from Eurovision. At the time, the EBU said that the decision was made “in light of ongoing events in Ukraine,” and the fact that allowing Russia to participate “would bring the competition into disrepute.”   In a press briefing ahead of Saturday’s final, Eurovision chief Martin Green acknowledged that the contest is “going through some challenging times,” and said organizers conducted a number of “listening …

The achievement surprised many because Bulgaria wasn’t among the favorites to win in 2026. But with its catchy “Welcome to the riot!” refrain and bouncy vibe, performer Dara’s banging anthem “Bangaranga” bested 24 other nations for the glittery global musical crown at the finals on Saturday in Vienna, Austria. Israel came in second, as it did last year. Ten competitors were eliminated from the original group of 35 in the semi-finals earlier this week. In his appraisal of his 10 favorite Eurovision 2026 songs, NPR critic Glen Weldon called “Bangaranga” an “insanely catchy bop” and praised its “deep, profound, abiding grooviness.” “Oh my god!” Dara yelled, as she accepted the Crystal Microphone, the event’s glass trophy, from last year’s winner, JJ of Austria. As with other global cultural events, such as the …

Bulgaria wins the 70th Eurovision song contest with the party anthem Bangaranga

Bulgaria wins the 70th Eurovision song contest with the party anthem Bangaranga

ECLECTIC AND OUTRAGEOUS The political tensions have clouded a contest that, over the decades, has given the world the perfect pop of Abba’s Waterloo and the ageless Nel blu, dipinto di blu – better known as Volare – along with a host of Euro-pop party anthems. The musicians had just three minutes to win over millions of viewers who, along with national juries of music professionals, pick the winner. Jets of flame, glitter guns and wind machines worked overtime in a show that celebrated Europe’s eclectic musical tastes. Serbian metal band Kravina offered hard rock angst, as did Romania’s Alexandra Capitanescu with the provocatively titled Choke Me. Albania’s Alis used a brooding choral sound to pay tribute to mothers on Nan. Cypriot contestant Antigoni had the crowd on its feet with dance floor filler Jalla. British act Look Mum No Computer’s jokey novelty song Eins, Zwei, Drei was followed by Monroe, a soaring soprano from France with Regarde! Female solo artists dominated: An empowering power ballad from Germany’s Sarah Engels, gospel-tinged R&B from Poland’s Alicja, …

Eurovision avoids its nightmare scenario as Bulgaria beats Israel to win – POLITICO

Tensions over Israel’s participation in the contest flared up earlier in the week, when artist Noam Bettan performed pop-ballad “Michelle” to audible boos and chants during the semifinal. Four audience members had to be removed for “disruptive behavior,” according to organizers. It was Bulgaria’s first victory in the competition, having debuted in 2005. Bulgaria was returning in 2026 after a four-year break from the contest due to financial constraints at the public broadcaster. Bulgaria’s booming dance anthem was a high-energy crowd pleaser in Vienna, but wasn’t originally tipped to win, up against more favored entries from Finland or Australia. The countries sitting out this year (Spain, Ireland, the Netherlands, Slovenia and Iceland) said their decision was due to Israel’s war in Gaza — which was sparked by a violent attack on Israel by Hamas militants — and the resulting humanitarian crisis it has triggered.   Demonstrators also marched through Vienna on Saturday protesting Israel’s inclusion in the contest, chanting “boycott Israel, boycott ESC [Eurovision Song Contest]” and “no stage for genocide.” Protesters march in Vienna ahead of the final of the Eurovision …

She won with a total of 516 points, beating Israel’s second-place score of 343. It was something of a shock result, given that Finland’s duo Linda Lampenius and Pete Parkkonen, and Australia’s pop star Delta Goodrem, were widely viewed as the two favourites vying to win the contest. From Greece’s zany entry Akylas and his rapid-fire track “Ferto”, to Serbia’s chilling metal song “Kraj Mene” performed by LAVINA and Moldova’s intense rapper Satoshi with “Viva, Moldova!”, …
